二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Nobody likes to fail. It makes people feel embarrassed and discouraged. What's worse, it may cause major professional or personal trouble and lead to negativity. Basically, failure is no fun for most people. However, a vast body of research tells us that failure provides us with a chance to grow and develop, increases adaptability, and helps protect against anxiety.

It's hard to change the mindset (心态) of a lifetime. But even if we still can't get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids.

Christy Pennison, a professional consultant, says she works with an increasing number of kids and teens who show significant anxiety around a fear of failure. She said, "We want to protect our children, and we want them to live happy and meaningful lives, so we frequently tell them the harm of failure and ask them to avoid failure. The children experiencing internal and sometimes extenal pressure think they shouldn't fail. Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don't live up to a certain standard, or things don't go according to the plans, they will feel upset and anxious."

Pennison argues that failures, are often the hidden learning chances that can help people develop positive qualities, like persistence, focus, flexibility, patience, and positive self-image.

So what can parents do to help their children embrace (拥抱) failure instead of avoiding it at all costs? Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result. "This allows children to build confidence in themselves, "she explains." Acknowledging the effort can give children permission to try new things without a fear of failure. And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset —'I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.'—helps them keep a belief in themselves, and expands their world of possibilities." As Pennison points out, we all fail, but how we get up after we fail is what matters.

【1】What aspect do most people focus on when thinking of failure?

A.The great courage to face it.

B.The efforts made to handle it.

    C.Unexpected benefits it brings.

    D.Unpleasant side effects it brings.

【2】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?

    A.Bring up the main topic.

B.List the challenges in our life.

    C.Add some background information.

D.Stress the importance of the mindset

【3】What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph?

    A.The causes of children's anxiety.

    B.Christy Pennison's comments on adolescents.

    C.The consequences of overprotecting children.

D.Christy Pennison's experience in educating children.

【4】Which of the following advice can help parents encourage kids to face failure?

    ① Praise kids' every achievement.

② Make kids embrace a bright mindset.

③ Focus on the process of kids' effort

④ Expand kids' knowledge about the world.

⑤ Encourage kids to make new attempts.

    A.①②④

    B.②③④

    C.②③⑤

    D.①③⑤

  • 22、It was one of those moments every new parent dreads (恐惧). My baby son was screaming as if I’d just dipped him in a bucket of battery acid (电池酸). It felt as if he’d been screaming like that for years, though he was only two months old. Even worse, this was happening in public — I was sitting with my howling baby in the food court of a Los Angeles mall, despairing (绝望) as other diners silently judged me while watching us over plates of food.

Until, that is, one woman — a complete stranger — did something and taught me a lesson about kindness that lingers to this day. She walked over to me and put her hand on my shoulder. “This won’t last forever,” she said. “I know it doesn’t seem like it right now, but things will get better. He’ll stop crying. You’ll get some sleep.” And then this blessed spirit delivered by the mall gods disappeared in the lift.

It was such a small thing, a tiny kindness, really, but it made all the difference. It was 2001 and I was living in a foreign city with a newborn, without friends or family, and I was terribly lonely. This woman had seen me, if only for a moment, and taken the time to make a human connection. It was just a minute out of her day, but it has stayed with me for nearly two decades.

We all want to be better in the world and more giving to others. But we can easily get hung up on the sheer magnitude of that challenge — making time to regularly volunteer or finding money to donate to a cause. Doing good doesn’t have to be an important task, though; it can be incremental (递增的). It can be as quick as a smile, a word, a phone call, an email. It can be the note you send to a friend who is feeling blue or the baby carriage you help carry down the subway stairs for a parent on their own, even though you’re late for work.

I’m reminded of a line from Brian Goldman’s bestseller, The Power of Kindness: “The opposite meaning of empathy is apathy (冷漠).” That is, the opposite of doing good isn’t doing harm; it’s doing nothing. Every tiny act of generosity — every door held open, every coffee bought for a stranger — builds a bridge to another person. It says, “I see you.” Today, when we spend most of our time looking at our phones, and not at people’s faces, that’s invaluable.

So, while I’m not particularly good at regularly volunteering or running marathons to raise money for charity, I’m committed to small gestures. I try to send a note of praise every day to someone whose work I admire. I’ve become phone friends with a lonely 87-year-old woman who contacted me about something I wrote, and who lives in a city far from her grown children and grandchildren. On airplanes, I find the new parents with panicked eyes and offer to hold their babies. I remember what it felt like when the screaming baby was mine. I remember when a tiny kindness felt monumental, enough to change the world.

【1】According to the passage, what makes the author dreadful?

A.Dipping her baby in a bucket of battery acid.

B.Being silently judged by other diners in public.

C.Sitting with her crying baby in a restaurant.

D.Failing to stop her baby’s constant crying in public.

【2】Why did the author mention her baby son’s crying in Paragraph 1?

    A.To introduce the topic.

    B.To prove her opinion.

    C.To show her helplessness.

    D.To create a disappointing atmosphere.

【3】What holds people back from being more giving to others?

    A.Being short of time.

    B.Being lacking in money.

    C.Keeping looking at their phones.

D.Always trying to do important deeds.

【4】A line from Brian Goldman’s The Power of Kindness is used in Paragraph 5 to show that ___________ .

A.doing harm to others is better than doing nothing

B.every small gesture counts in connecting people

C.people are supposed to pay more attention to others’faces

D.spending most of our time looking at our phones is invaluable

【5】What can be the most suitable title for the passage?

    A.The Kind Strangers

    B.The Power of Words

    C.The Small Mercies

    D.The Power of Kindness

  • 23、Linking a word to brain areas responsible for movement strengthens the memory of its meaning. This is the conclusion a research team reached after using electric pulses to purposefully disrupt these areas in language learners. “Our results provide neuroscientific(神经科学) evidence for why learning techniques that involve the body’s motor system should be used more often,” neuroscientist Brian Mathias said in a news release.

As Mathias and his colleagues describe in the Journal of Neuroscience, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented artificial words (such as “lamube” for “ camera,” and “atesi” for “thought”) over four days. While the test subjects first heard the new vocabulary, they were simultaneously shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the subjects performed the gesture themselves.

Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German in a multiple-choice test. At the same time, they had an equipment attached to their heads that sent weak electric pulses to their motor cortex (运动皮层) — the brain area that controls voluntary arm movements. When these interfering signals were active, the subjects found it harder to recall the words accompanied by gestures. When the device sent no interfering signals, they found it easier to remember the words. This applied to concrete words, such as “camera”, as well as abstract ones such as “thought”.

The effect did not occur when the test subjects were only presented with matching pictures instead of gestures when learning vocabulary. But it is not only the motor component itself that promotes learning. The meaning of the gesture also contributes, as a study led by Mathias’s colleague Manuela Macedonia several years ago showed.

“I think we seldom use gesture in our classrooms,” Goldin-Meadow says. “People use it consciously, if they’re good teachers and good listeners, but we don’t necessarily bring it into the class if we don’t think about it — and it could be used more often and more effectively.”

【1】What can we learn about the research conclusion?

A.Electric pulses can disrupt some brain areas.

B.The movement has a strong influence on memory.

C.Motor system may be helpful in memorizing words.

D.Learning techniques are involved in the body’s motor system.

【2】What does the underlined word “simultaneously” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Earlier in time.

    B.At the same time.

    C.A moment later.

    D.Time and time again.

【3】What is the function of motor cortex in memorizing the words?

A.It makes it hard to memorize words.

    B.It controls voluntary arm movements.

C.It contributes to the results of memorizing the words.

D.It makes it easier to memorize concrete words than abstract words.

    【4】What does Goldin-Meadow suggest?

A.Using gestures in the class is recommended.

B.Good teachers use gestures more effectively.

C.Bringing gestures into the class is a must.

D.Good teachers always use gestures in the class.

  • 24、Tom was a clever boy, but his parents were poor, so he had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to get to the university, but it was so expensive to study there that during the holiday he found it necessary to get two jobs at the same time so as to make enough money to pay for his studies.

One summer he managed to get a job in a butcher’s shop(肉店)during the day-time, and another in a hospital at night. In the shop, he learnt to cut meat quite nicely, so the butcher often left him to do all the serving while he went to the back room to do the accounts(账目). In the hospital, on the other hand, he was, of course, allowed to do the simplest jobs, like helping to lift people and to carry them from one part of the hospital to another. Both at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital, Tom had to wear white clothes.

One evening at the hospital, Tom had to carry a woman from her bed to the place where she was to have an operation. The woman was already feeling frightened at the thought of the operation before he came to get her, but when she saw Tom, that finished her.

“No! No!” she cried“Not my butcher! I won’t be operated on!” and fainted away(昏厥).
