21、The first time I came to Beijing, I barely spoke a word of Chinese and had no idea about what it would mean to live in a new country.
I went on adventures in supermarkets, thinking: “What is this place, with hundreds of noodle types but only two brands of steak?” I walked around to get a better sense of the city. I would start a morning near Houhai, which was amazing with commercial walkways. From there, I would wander into hutongs, the narrow paths that wind their way from one end of old Beijing to the other. The elderly women, known as damas, sat on chairs outside their doorsteps. Occasionally, a man on a bicycle would pass by. To any newcomer, Beijing seemed like a ever-growing city contrasted with its calm surroundings and a pace of life seemingly unchanged for decades.
However, everything in Beijing has in fact changed. The Olympics started the construction of more subway lines, a new airport, many high-speed railway routes, and many other projects. In the years since, Beijing has continued to transform at an amazing speed. I had no idea that the 2018 Beijing I was seeing was just a snapshot(快照) of the city' s fast-paced turnover.
When I returned three years later for another research project, I found that my picture was entirely outdated, although the relaxed damas still sat on their chairs. Bike-sharing companies had come and gone. The folks who had previously been roasting lamb meat in food stands on the streets were distributing the groceries for an online shopping platform company. The group of old men who swam in Houhai was only half in number.
Some believe that because they have wandered its darkest hutongs and been to its grandest palaces, they have a chance of knowing Beijing, but locals only laugh at the attempt.
【1】How did the author feel about Beijing when he first came?

【3】What do we know about damas?
A.They adjust to the changes rapidly.
B.They have moved to other places.
C.They lead a busier life than before.
D.They seem unchanged through years.

A.Locals will provide varied answers.
B.It will be an effort in vain.
C.Visitors may easily be confused.
D.Misunderstanding will arise in no time.
22、Dear Water Use It Wisely,
More and more water is getting wasted each day. I want to help out and teach people how to conserve water. Please continue reading because your organization is very influential. I had an idea that you could send some workers from your organization to schools all around the world, and they could inform the students about water usage.
Did you know that every minute, 1,000,000,000 (one billion) tons of water falls to the earth from rainfall? We are lucky to have rainfall water. It helps fill up our lakes. There is about 326,000,000,000,000,000,000 (326 quintillion) gallons of water on Earth. Yes, this is tons, but it is getting wasted. I want to keep this number BIG.
Everyone needs water-so why waste it? I think it is very irresponsible to let the water run when you are not at home. We can use water with respect by making good choices. Take a shower instead of a bath, use an automatic dishwasher instead of hand washing. You can buy Earth Friendly Cleaner Spray, so that our drinking water will not be polluted. If your washer isn't full then don't start it. With water being wasted every day, by the time we get to the 3000's we are going to have to survive on milk and juice!!! Won't that be boring?!?!? That means we will have to give our dogs a bowl of juice instead of water with their food. I mean, come on, we're talking real life here!!
Water wasting needs to come to a stop and without delay. Water Use It Wisely, PLEASE inform people about their water usage! It plays a big role in my life. It would be really great if you take part in spreading the news about this! Thanks tons!!
An impatient fourth grader waiting for a reply,

23、Revealed to the world by the famous British explorer, Dr David Livingstone, in 1855, the Victoria Falls are one of Africa’s best-known natural wonders. They form a natural border between Zimbabwe (津巴布韦) and Zambia (赞比亚).
The falls are named after Queen Victoria by Livingstone. They were known to the native people in the 18th century as: "the smoke that thunders". The waterfall is formed as the two-kilometer-wide Zambezi River spills (溅) over the edge of its giant stone riverbed and falls into the gorge (山谷) below. At their highest point, the Victoria Falls drop a distance of 108m, almost twice as far as the Niagara Falls. As much as 546 million cubic meters of water per minute falls over the edge from that height.
Viewing the falls from the Zambian side means that visitors can follow a path that goes right up to the falls. The falls can also be viewed from the Boiling Pot, right in the depths of the gorge at the bottom of the falls. The 111-meter-high Victoria Falls Bridge, a railway crossing, is now a popular place for Bungee jumping. It can be crossed on foot for excellent views of the falls and the winding blue-green waters of the Zambezi River. It is also possible to see the falls from a plane.
The area around the falls is a major game-viewing place. The best time to view the Victoria Falls is between December and July, when the water level is the highest. Contact Addresses Tourist Centre, Livingstone, Zambia Tel: (03) 321 404E-mail: zntb@zamnet.zm Website: www.zambiatourism.com。

24、Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word “cold”. For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, for example, are said to be cold-blooded. Cold-blooded people act in a merciless way. They may do brutal things to others, and not by accident. For example, a newspaper says the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. The killer murdered someone, not in self-defense. He seemed to kill with no emotion.
Cold can affect other parts of the body, the feet, for example. Heavy socks can warm your feet, if your feet are really cold. But there is an expression—to get cold feet—that has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned. All the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
Cold can also affect your shoulder. You “give someone the cold shoulder” when you refuse to speak to him. You treat him in a distant, cold way. The expression probably comes from the physical act of turning your back towards someone, instead of speaking to him face-to-face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you or to someone who has lied about you to others.
“A cold fish” is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and show no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.
“Out in the cold” is an expression often heard. It means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise. He was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
【1】The passage is intended to tell us that ________.
A.cold weather has a great effect on human bodies
B.many English expressions contain the word “cold”
C.cold is a word closely linked with human emotions
D.the word “cold” has many different meanings in English
【2】The underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1 most probably means“________”.
A.impolite
B.illegal
C.cruel
D.extreme
【3】You can say Tom ________ if the teacher gives all the boys except him a pen as a prize.
A.is given the cold shoulder
B.is left out in the cold
C.has got cold feet
D.is murdered by a cold-blooded killer
【4】We can draw a conclusion from the passage that ________.
A.all the expressions containing the word “cold” have negative meanings
B.all the expressions containing the word “cold” have something to do with cold
C.people who show no human emotions or feelings have cold blood
D.many parts of the human body can be badly affected by cold

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It’s eight o’clock on Christmas morning, and my dad says he wants to listen to the news. My 11-year-old self is wondering why on Earth grown-ups would be interested in the news when there are important things to be done, such as handing out presents. And then, while I am only half-listening, something strange happens: the newsreader begins talking about a Christmas message. Hadn’t we heard that report earlier?
My older brother, Colin, figures out what’s happening. “Pete, Pete, it’s a tape recorder! We’ve got our tape recorder!”
It finally dawns on me: my dad recorded the news and is playing it back now.
Colin and I had both been blind from birth. At the special school that Colin and I attended, a recorder of your own was the height of desire. However, realistic about family finances, we had no real expectations of getting one.
The tape recorder my dad bought us would have cost more than four times his weekly wage. He could only afford it by borrowing the money. I know my mum and dad would have thought long and hard before being in the debt.
The new toy controlled the rest of the Christmas holidays. Once we had mastered the controls, we recorded anything and everything: each other, our parents, the milkman, the dog... and we very quickly learned how much fun we could have with it.
It wasn’t the first time I had been attracted by a tape recorder. I vividly remember walking into a room when I was four and hearing a child’s tuneless singing. I stopped dead. “It’s you,” Dad said.
It turned out that he had borrowed a tape recorder. So for the first time, in the same way that a sighted child might react to seeing themselves in a mirror, I got the sense of myself as a separate person who existed outside my head and was experienced by other people.
