21、A study, with the goal of reducing the bad environmental effects of cattle, suggests that cattle can be trained to leave their waste in special areas.
In the study, scientists trained 11 young cattle to use the “MooLoo—a kind of bathroom for cattle. The researchers used a sweet treat to get the cows to push through a door and urinate (排尿) as instructed.
“The cows are at least as good as children, aged 2 to 4 years, at least as quick,” said Lindsay Matthews of New Zealand’s University. Urine contains nitrogen (氮). When mixed with solid waste, it becomes ammonia (氨). The chemical can play a part in environmental problems. It can also pol-lute water and create the pollutant nitrous oxide.
A single cow can produce about 30 liters of urine a day. In 2019, as reported, nitrous oxide made up 7% of all the US greenhouse gases.
Scientist Brian Hare was not part of the research but said he was not surprised by the findings. “I am surprised no one has demonstrated that before,” Hare said. He also added that if it could be done more often or in larger amounts, training animals would make it easier to deal with waste products and reduce greenhouse gases.
At the laboratory, the researchers put the cattle in the special area, waited until they urinated and then gave them a treat: a sweet liquid of molasses. If the cows urinated outside the MooLoo after the training, they got a shot of cold water.
Two issues raise questions about the study. Researchers gave drugs to the cattle to get them to urinate more because they had limited time. And researchers only trained cows to use the MooLoo to urinate, not to leave solid waste. Urine is a bigger problem, at least in Europe, but he predicted the researchers could train cows to leave solid waste too. The biggest environmental problem for cattle, though, is the gas methane. Cows release the gas that causes global warming. The cows cannot be trained to not release such a gas. Matthews said: “They would blow up.”
【1】What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.The cows can be trained to urinate in the bathroom.
B.Young cows are as clever as 2- or 4-year-old children.
C.The result of the finding was proved vain due to limited time.
D.No researcher was surprised at the finding before.
【2】How are the cattle trained to urinate in special areas?
A.By giving drugs to the cattle.
B.By offering a sweet treat if they do as guided.
C.By shooting with cold water at them.
D.By measuring how much urine they leave every day.
【3】What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Trained cattle and cows can largely reduce the global warming.
B.The next stage of the research is to train cows not to release the gas.
C.The method used in the research cannot completely reduce the pollution.
D.Cattle release the largest amount of gas compared to other species.
【4】What is the text about?
A.MooLoo—A special bathroom is designed for young cattle.
B.Cows are to be trained for scientific purposes on a larger scale.
C.Environmentalists can make full use of cows’ solid waste and urine.
D.Training cattle to urinate contributes to less greenhouse effect.
22、My mother at 85 was quick, with good vision and sharp reaction for her age, but one day she knocked into three parked cars on a supermarket parking lot. We never found out exactly how it happened, but the investigators figured Mom hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
Mom was lucky, even though she spent two weeks in the hospital. But we unwillingly concluded that it was time to take away Mom’s car keys. Tears ran down her cheeks. I think she never felt old until that moment, when I took away the independence provided by the car.
In the days that followed, we suggested she take taxis to shop, but she wouldn’t do it. Fortunately, she lived in the city and quickly slipped into the habit of taking the bus. She began to enjoy her new life. But most old people have no convenient public transportation or shops within walking distance.
We seemed to have made a right decision. But is tragedy like that a reason to take away the car keys of the elderly? I think not. Age doesn’t necessarily prove anything. Slower reactions or not, senior citizens are much better than teenagers. They usually drive more slowly. They get honked at a lot, but their slower speed reduces the risk of death and destruction. The worst risk-takers on the highway are young men between the ages of 18 to 25, but no one suggests taking away their keys or raising the driving age to 26.
The death rate in the past year for motorists between 16 and 20, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was more than double that for drivers over 70. The older citizen who tries to avoid danger is likely to take personal responsibility more seriously than a younger person who causes danger through partying and risk.
So, let Granny drive. Road age is a lot less dangerous than road rage.
【1】Why was Mom sad when her car keys were taken away according to the author?
A.She was misunderstood.
B.She had to walk to shop.
C.She realized she was old.
D.She was seriously injured.
【2】What did the author think of taking away Mom’s car keys finally?
A.Influential.
B.Unreasonable.
C.Meaningful.
D.Unimportant.
【3】Which of the following opinions does the author support?
A.It’s necessary to raise the driving age to 20.
B.People under 26 should be forbidden to drive.
C.Both senior and young drivers like taking risks while driving.
D.Seniors shouldn’t be banned from driving because of their age.
【4】What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The legal age for driving.
B.Why young drivers take risks.
C.The accident caused by Mom.
D.Whether the elderly can drive.
23、Many say artificial intelligence is the biggest invention since the Internet. The sudden rise of large language models like ChatGPT has fueled the publication to a higher level—AI will be the common language the world speaks and humans can build the Tower of Babel again. With the technology in hand, it seems spending thousands of hours to master a different tongue is simply a waste of time.
Duolingo’s co-founder and CEO Luis von Ahn has a different opinion. He said it’s still worthwhile for people to learn a new language despite the rapid advancement of AI powered translation technology in the past decade. “Computers are better than humans playing chess. And there are more people playing chess now than there’s ever been,” said von Ahn. “People just want to do certain things even if computers are good at it.
According to Duolingo’s research, the majority of new language learners agreed learning a new language could make travelling a better experience and more fun; and 80 percent think learning new languages will inspire them to be travelers with an adventurous spirit.
Luis von Ahn co-founded Duolingo in 2011, which offers customized learning exercises, immediate feedback and gamification(游戏化). The platform provides equal access with over 40 languages to everyone who wants to learn. Last year, the company even rolled out sessions for its first dialect language——Cantonese. The app attracted many Mandarin learners as well. Their primary motivation to try the language was for “intellectual development,” according to the company.
Duolingo has applied AI technology to the language learning platform since day one. With a powerful AI tool, it can provide conversations based on previous exchanges with the user to make language learning more natural. The AI can understand the sentences and react to the input from learners to keep the conversation going.
The goal for the language learning app for von Ahn himself, is to operate on par with a human tutor. He said Duolingo is already as effective as study in a classroom. “I think with AI, we’re getting closer and closer to being as good as a one-to-one human tutor,” he said.
【1】The italic(斜体) part in paragraph 1 is to show that many people believe _______.
A.learning a second language is significant to humans
B.AI should not be used as a common language for humans

C.Out of pressure of travelling.
D.Thanks to human’s increasing intelligence.
【3】What does the underlined phrase “on par with” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.in aid of

24、The Beijing International Marathon has acquired a new name among some disappointed participants: Smogathon.
About 30,000 runners, many from other parts of China or abroad, awoke in the Chinese capital on Sunday to an orange sun glowing weakly through a dirty haze(雾霾). Some ran anyway. Some ran away. But no one cancelled on the advice of the organizers, the Chinese Athletic Association and the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, because those organizations did not call it off. That has made participants call the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which has approved the 26-mile, or 42-kilometer race, to set air quality standards in the future to avoid damaging the runners’ health. The association could not be reached by telephone on Sunday.
“Does the IAAF have guidelines?” asked Chas Pope, a British engineer who took part in the marathon on Sunday. “If they don’t, they should consider it,” said Mr. Pope, who has lived in Beijing for 11 years and runs several long-distance races each year. “It’s meant to be fun and good for your health,” Mr. Pope said of the marathon. “But in such air, it’s just ridiculous to be running,” he said. He abandoned the course. “Most of my overseas friends pulled out,” he said. “And quite a few of my Chinese friends too, but a lot didn’t. I think they don’t know as much about the health impact.”
Images on Twitter and Chinese social media showed Chinese runners wearing a variety of face protections, from light cloth masks to World War I-style gas masks. Still many completed the race without masks. “Today’s race should definitely have been called off or rescheduled,” said Zhang Kai, Beijing-based campaigner with Greenpeace East Asia. “What happened today to this sports even is just another reminder to the government that much remains to be done to China’s energy and industrial structure to solve pollution,” said Mr. Zhang. “If the battle against pollution is a marathon, it is now time to catch up on speed.”
In the end, the race was won by two Ethiopians: Girmay Birhanu Gebru won the men’s race in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 42 seconds while Fatuma Sado Dergo won the women’s in 2 hours, 30 minutes and 3 seconds, breaking Chinese women’s advantage of the race for the last 22 years.
The favored Chinese woman runner, Gong Lihua, told China News Net that the smog didn’t affect her too much but it interfered with many people’s ability to sweat, affecting their performance.
