二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Last Thursday, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced that six red wolf pups had been born in the wild. That’s great news for endangered red wolves and marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2018. Since only 15 to 17 red wolves are still living in the wild, having six new wild-born pups is a huge deal.

Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.

In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed. It was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.

Fourteen of those wolves were caught and kept in captivity (圈养) to protect them. The program was called the Red Wolf Recovery Program and led by FWS. By 1980, red wolves were believed to be extinct in the wild.

Luckily, the wolves did well in captivity, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon, the FWS began releasing (放生) red wolves back into the wild. Between 1987 and 1994, the recovery program released 60 adult red wolves.

Over time, those wolves spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. In 2008, there were 47 wild pups born. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild.

Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell, the number of pups being born also began to drop. In 2018, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2019, 2020 and 2021, no wild pups were born at all. So, the news that six pups were born in the wild this year is a huge success.

【1】What is the right order for the events described in the passage?

① Six pups were born in the wild.

② 60 red wolves were set free into the wild.

③ 14 red wolves were caught.

④ The Endangered Species Act was passed.

    A.①③②④

    B.②③④①

    C.③②④①

    D.④③②①

【2】What do we know about the Red Wolf Recovery Program from the passage?

    A.It began in 1980.

B.It is a project started by the American government.

C.It aims to catch all the pure red wolves.

D.It was significant but ended in failure.

【3】Why did the number of red wolves become smaller after 2012?

A.Most of them were killed by other animals.

    B.Their habitat was destroyed.

C.Some adult wolves died in accidents.

    D.They were caught by humans.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

A.Endangered red wolf pups born in the wild.

B.Laws made to protect wild-born red wolf pups.

C.Reasons why red wolves are endangered.

D.The importance of protecting wild red wolves.

  • 22、Roughly half of college students will have some degree of depression at some point during their time in school. Even more startling, 6.2 percent of college students surveyed in 2012 considered suicide and 1.3 percent attempted it, according to an American College Health Association study released this spring. If you’re feeling depressed on campus, you may find the following tips helpful.

Exercise: Physical activity releases endorphins – chemicals that produce an overall positive feeling within the body, which fight depression naturally. Mental health experts claim that exercise is a solution to those feeling mild or moderate depression. However, for those severely depressed, simply doing sports is not enough.

Use school counseling services: Campuses don’t employ mental health experts simply to throw thousands of dollars down the drain. Their job is to help students, so experts recommend you use them. Most students, however, are hesitant to take a trip to their college’s counseling center, fearing being laughed at by peers. As a result, some schools like Texas Christian University, are testing students for mental health problems when they get sick and visit the campus health clinic.

Take advantage of technology: Staying in touch with family members and friends from childhood and high school has become easier than ever with the coming of Facebook and video chat services like Skype. While mental health experts insist that it’s important to make friends in your new environment and be involved in the college community, it’s also significant to keep in touch with the people you knew before college.

Go to sleep: Following a fairly regular sleep pattern can defend you against depression. In college, many students’ sleep patterns are irregular thanks to late-night studying and partying, which is harmful to their mental health. Research strongly suggests that sleep is the key to learning and memory formation.

【1】According to the passage, physical activity __________ .

    A. is regarded as the best way to fight depression

    B. contributes to the release of endorphins

    C. can’t help the seriously depressed students

    D. improve people’s ability to learn and memorize

【2】It can be inferred from the 3rd paragraph that __________ .

    A. employing mental health experts on campus is a waste of money

    B. students with mental health problems can’t get on well with others

    C. going to college’s counseling center for help requires a lot of courage

    D. sick students in Texas Christian University must take psychological tests

【3】Taking advantage of technology is encouraged because it ____

A.enables students to get involved in college life

B.helps students stay in contact with others

C.offers students a way to make new friends

D.provides a way to avoid getting bored

【4】which of the following can NOT help one reduce depression?

    A.Taking exercise regularly every week

B.Chatting with old friends with Skype

C.Turning to mental health experts for advice

D.Holding parties deep into the night to relax

  • 23、   A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job. The story begins with Walter Carr's car breaking down the night before starting a new job at Bellhops, a furniture moving company.

Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham—32 kilometers away. He left at midnight so that he could make it  to the customer's house by 8:00 am the next morning.

Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4:00 am. So, they stopped to see if he needed help. After hearing his story, they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am.

The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey. Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest. He just wanted to start working. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen.

Reporter Carol Robinson of the Birmingham News wrote that Carr also shared another story with his customer. He told Lamey that he and his mother moved from New Orleans, Louisiana to Birmingham, Alabama after losing their home in Hurricane Katrina. Katrina was an extremely destructive and deadly hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast of the U. S. in 2005.

Jenny Lamey later wrote this on Facebook: “I just can't tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey.” She then started a GoFundMe page to help Walter with money to get his car fixed. When the CEO of Bellhops, Luke Marklin, learned of Carr's story, he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to give Walter his own 2014 Ford Escape.

Walter Carr's story touched many others around the United States. Within a few days, people gave over $ 73,000 to his GoFundMe page. Carr has decided to give a part of the donations to the Birmingham Education Foundation. And he has received more offers for jobs and scholarships for schools.

  • 24、Riding on an exercise bike at home may keep you in physical shape, but it can get pretty boring after a while. Aaron Puzey had been on his exercise bike for half an hour a day for years when he decided to look for a way to make it a bit more fun.

With virtual reality technology widely available nowadays, all he needed to do was find a way of applying it to his needs. So he set out to build an app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR headset(头戴式视图器) which would allow him to hook it up to Google Street view and make it seem like he's cycling through different real-life locations.

Building the app to download the 3D data from Street View and make it viewable in the VR headset was the toughest part of his project. Other than that, all he needed to do was tape a Bluetooth monitor to his exercise bike. Although the quality of the images sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, leaving complex scenes like trees looking like a mess, Aaron has been having a lot of fun on his journey.

Aaron's project is obviously no substitute(替代品) for real outdoor cycling as it lacks things like the wind blowing in your face or the pain of battling an uphill climb, but it has given him a goal, as well as the chance to take in the beauty of places he might have otherwise never seen. It definitely beats staring at a wall or at the TV for 30 minutes, anyway.

Obviously, Aaron's set up the officially allows him to ride a bike anywhere around the world. He says he has always wanted to see Japan, so once his ride comes to an end, he plans to start another one across the Land of the Rising Sun.

【1】Why did Aaron Puzey build the app?

A.To invent a new kind of bicycle

    B.To participate in a competition.

C.To satisfy the needs of the public.

D.To add fun to his exercise bike routine

【2】Which of the following can best describe Aaron Puxey?

    A.Creative.

    B.Ambitious.

    C.Funny.

    D.Boring.

【3】What was the challenge for Puzey in his project?

A.Changing the 3D data into pictures.

B.Downloading the software from the Internet.

C.Making the 3D data viewable in the headset.

D.Taping a Bluetooth monitor lo his exercise bike.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

A.Cycling Across the World at Home

B.The Lazy Man and His Crazy Idea

C.A New Way of Cycling Without Effort

D.A Substitute for Real Outdoor Cycling
