21、Virtual conferences raise challenges for organizers, attendees and speakers. However, a number of surprising positives show how virtual conferences are generating a pattern shift in how conferences of the future could look.
One of the greatest benefits has been the environment. A recent review showed that the total carbon footprint of the world’s estimated 7.8 million researchers travelling to one conference a year ranges from 3.9 to 15.6 million metric tons, equal to that of some small nations. In contrast, organizers of two fully virtual conferences in the U.S. estimated that their total carbon emissions were less than 1 percent of a traditional “fly-in” event.
Relocating conferences online is also accessible to a larger and more diverse audience. Travelling has long raised problems for people with children or disabilities. Similarly, financial and visa restrictions prevent many from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and specific countries from attending international meetings. While the 2019 European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna attracted just over 16,200 participants, the online 2020 General Assembly registered over 26,000 individual users. Since the scale of virtual conferences is much better than in-person ones, it has been relatively easy to accommodate all these extra attendees.
To boost social interactions among participants across continents and time zones, conferences are bringing new apps into play. “Braindate” and “Brella” match profiles uploaded by attendees and suggest private video conferences to discuss shared interests. Such matchmaking apps not only reintroduce the networking opportunities sought by conferencegoers, but may even lower the barrier for junior members to reach out to the superstars in their field. Other conference organizers have been using the ability of online platforms to divide participants into groups to foster more mixing, rather than watching attendees automatically gravitate (被吸引) to big names.
Ultimately, in-person and virtual conferences are not interchangeable. Conferences of the future should aim to capture the main strengths of both. An informal survey by Nature showed that 80 percent of 486 respondents believe that some meetings should be held virtually.

22、 If women are mercilessly exploited (剥削) year after year, they have only themselves to blame. Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores. Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend large sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn. Women who cannot afford to throw away clothing in this way, waste hours of their time changing their old-fashioned dresses. Skirts are lengthened or shortened; neck-lines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with necessary things like warmth, comfort and durability (耐用). They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn't at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day, or picking her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability? Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability (稳定耐用)? That is for you to decide.
【1】Designers and big stores always make money_________.
A.by mercilessly exploiting women workers in the clothing industry

A.the commercial exploitation of women
B.the women’s strength of character
C.basic qualities of inconstancy and instability

A.women’s inconstancy in their choice of clothing is often laughed at
B.women are better able to put up with discomfort
C.men are also exploited greatly by fashion designers
D.men are more reasonable in the matter of fashion
23、Long plane trips can be tiring. Luckily, there are things you can do both during and after a long flight that can help reduce (减轻) your discomfort.
During the flight
• 【1】 Boredom gives you the chance to pay attention to your discomfort. Instead, help pass the time by watching a movie, reading a book, writing a letter, walking up and down the aisle (过道), or listening to music.
• Drink a lot and eat just a little. The longer the flight, the more the air dries out. 【2】 Stay away from wine and coffee because they can make you lose more water. Eat lightly.
• Make yourself comfortable. Wear loose-fitting clothing and sit comfortably. 【3】 Avoid crossing your legs, and get any hard subjects out of your back pockets.
• Get a good seat. Request a seat over the wing or the wheels. 【4】 Sitting in an aisle seat will make it easier for you to get up from your seat and will give you more legroom.
• Sleep. If possible, sleep during night flights, and just take a very short sleep on day flights.
After arrival
There is no useful way to deal with jet lag (时差综合症). 【5】 For example, you can reset your watch when you take off, and you can eat and sleep at the local time right away.

24、It’s never too late to get into science fiction.
While science fiction, or sci-fi, often asks that most powerful question “What if?” —— it also deals with “This, now”: reflecting it, questioning it and satirizing (讽刺) it. Science fiction can act at once as a glimpse into our imaginary future while holding a mirror up to our current state of society.
Indeed, it can act as a warning for the present to avoid a terrifying future or as a blueprint for future technology. Science fiction can inspire us to live better today so that we can live better lives tomorrow. As Scientific Americans noted, “Science fiction can remind us of … wonder and hope. But it also sends us a warning —— to think about the potential influences of our findings, beyond our idealistic dreams.”
Thanks to its brilliant creators, sci-fi becomes the perfect genre to ask the greatest questions that humans dare to ask and broaden the concepts of what is possible in the universe. Who are we and what can we become? Can technology make the world a better place? What will tomorrow bring —— and what can we do today to make that a reality?
The genre of sci-fi can push the boundaries of what we think is possible, like the legendary submarine mentioned in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea far before any such vehicle existed. Or it can warn us of a near-future impacted by biotechnology, as in the MaddAddam trilogy. Sci-fi can even imagine how Earth responds to first contact with aliens, a focus of The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. Sci-fi and its creators know no limits to what can be imagined. Anything is possible.
As science fiction grows in popularity, more books are being written, and more movies and TV shows are adapting these works for the screen. An adaptation of Dune is slated for a 2021 release, and The Three-Body Problem as well as MaddAddam are also in development. The medium of film and television has brought science fiction to life and continues to inspire — or scare — viewers with visions of the future.

25、Years ago, I lived in the English midlands and would walk the same route along the local canal each evening. On winter mornings, I would see the _________ sight of bird flocks dancing across the landscape, a distant cacophony (刺耳的嘈杂声) _________ above the fields. They were jackdaws (寒鸦), the smallest member of the crow family.
Research led by Masters student Alex Dibnah asked: Why are jackdaws so loud when they _________? Then he began to work with a team. The team’s _________ was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of “_________”. Each individual’s call might _________ as an “I’m in!” helping them coordinate (协调) their _________.
To test this, the researchers artificially _________ call levels during the jackdaws’ morning cacophony using speakers at their sleeping sites. When extra calls were played, the jackdaws _________ earlier, showing they use calls as a check-in system.
Individual jackdaws __________ from leaving with the flock because they get more social information like where to find food, they can maximize their time spent finding food, and they’re less __________ being attacked. This sort of decision-making isn’t __________ to jackdaws — it’s been reported in other species as well.
So, the cacophony of jackdaws in the morning is a clever solution to __________ a large group. If you’re __________ by the noise, find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they’ll leave you in __________.
