21、What we know of prebirth training makes all this attempt made by a mother to influence the character of her unborn child by studying poetry, art, or mathematics during pregnancy seem totally impossible. How could such extremely complex influences pass from the mother to the child? There is no connection between their nervous systems. Even the blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly. An emotional shock to the mother will affect her child, because it changes the activity of her glands(腺) and the chemistry of her blood. Any chemical change in the mother's blood will affect the child for better or worse. But we cannot see how a looking for mathematics or poetic genius can be dissolved(溶解) in blood and produce a similar liking or genius in the child.
In our discussion of instincts(本能) we saw that there was reason to believe that whatever we inherit(继承) must be of some very simple sort rather than any complicated or very definite kind of behavior. It is certain that no one inherits a knowledge of mathematics. It may be, however, that children inherit more or less of a rather general ability that we may call intelligence. If very intelligent children become deeply interested in mathematics, they will probably make a success of that study.
As for musical ability, it may be that what is inherited is an especially sensitive ear, a special structure of the hands or the vocal(发声的) organs connections between nerves and muscles. If these factors are all organized around music, the child may become a musician. The same factors, in other circumstance, might be organized about some other center of interest.
The rich emotional equipment might find expression in poetry. The capable fingers might develop skill in surgery. It is not the knowledge of music that is inherited, then nor even the love of it, but a certain bodily structure that makes it comparatively easy to acquire musical knowledge and skill. Whether that ability shall be directed toward music or some other fields may be decided entirely by forces in the environment in which a child grows up.
【1】What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. A mother can't help her child become a talented poet just by studying poems during pregnancy.
B. A pregnant mother needn't have prebirth training because of no nervous connection with her child.
C. Mothers' prebirth training is totally unlikely to influence the character of unborn children.
D. An emotional shock to the mother has little effect on her unborn child for their unconnected vessels.
【2】It can be concluded from the passage that a child may not inherit from mother.
A. sensitive ears B. capable fingers C. a knowledge of maths D. intelligence
【3】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Inherited Talents B. Role of the Environment C. An Unborn Child D. Role of Inheritance
22、Masks that helped save lives are proving a deadly danger for wildlife, with birds and sea creatures trapped in the shocking number of thrown-away facial coverings. Single-use masks have been found around pavements, waterways and beaches worldwide. Worn once, the thin protective materials can take hundreds of years to decompose. “Face masks aren’t going away any time soon—but when we throw them away, these items can harm the environment and the animals,” Ashley Fruno of animal rights group PETA said.
In Britain, a gull was rescued by the RSPCA after its legs became tangled in the straps of a mask for up to a week. The animal welfare charity took it to a wildlife hospital for treatment before its release.
The biggest impact may be in the water. More than 1.5 billion masks made their way into the world’s oceans last year, accounting for around 6,200 extra tons of ocean plastic pollution, according to environmental group Oceans Asia.
Conservationists in Brazil found one mask inside the stomach of a penguin after its body was washed up on a beach, while a dead pufferfish was discovered caught inside another off the coast of Miami. French campaigners found a dead crab trapped in a mask near the Mediterranean. Masks and gloves are “particularly problematic” for sea creatures, says George Leonard, chief scientist from NGO Ocean Conservancy. “When those plastics break down in the environment, they then enter the food chain and impact entire ecosystems.” he added.
There has been a shift towards greater use of reusable cloth masks as the pandemic has worn on, but many are still using the lighter single-use varieties. Campaigners have urged people to bin them properly and cut the straps to reduce the risk of animals becoming trapped. Oceans Asia has also called on governments to increase fines for littering and encourage the use of washable masks.
【1】What’s paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The problem of littering masks.
B.The long time to break down masks.
C.The threat of masks to wildlife.
D.The protective use of masks to people.
【2】What did the animal welfare charity do to the gull?
A.They gave first aid to the bird.
B.They released the bird at once.
C.They kept the bird for about a week.
D.They sent the bird to hospital.
【3】Which measure has been taken to help solve the problem?
A.Forbidding the use of single-use masks.
B.Wearing reusable cloth masks.
C.Cutting the masks up before throwing.
D.Increasing fines for binning masks.

24、 No. It’s a simple word, but it can be so difficult to say. Whether it’s a favor asked by a friend, or even an unethical request from a colleague, many people will say “yes” because they hate to let others down and saying “no” makes them feel uncomfortable.
And we worry that saying no will change the way the other person views us. If you have a reputation of being a helpful and accommodating person, it is even harder to say no because you don’t want to hurt that good reputation, says Adam Grant, a professor at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
“Every ‘no’ is a missed opportunity to make a difference and build a relationship,” Grant wrote in a column for The Huffington Post.
Saying no is a rejection and a lot of times it does hurt feelings. But even so, psychologists say, most people probably won’t take our “no” as badly as we think they will. That’s because of something called a “harshness bias (严重性偏向心理)” —our tendency to believe others will judge us more severely than they actually do. For those people pleasers, Grant says there’s a big difference between pleasing people and helping them. “Being a giver is not about saying yes to all of the people all of the time to all of the requests. It’s about saying yes to some of the people (generous givers who will return your favor, but not necessarily the selfish takers) some of the time (when it won’t compromise your own goals and ambitions) to some of requests (when you have resources or skills that are uniquely relevant).”
Always saying yes can make us overcommitted and put us under too much pressure. Saying no helps us protect our own priorities, psychologist Judith Sills told The Wall Street Journal. Another important reason to say no, Sills says, is it keeps us from giving in to peer pressure. “To have your own values, sometimes you have to say ‘no’ to people with whom you don’t agree,” Sills says.
【1】The underlined word “unethical” in paragraph 1 is closet in meaning to __________.
A.proper B.unacceptable C.moral D.illegal
【2】What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A.Saying yes is not necessarily satisfactory.
B.We should always say yes to the generous givers.
C.We should say yes to some requests from some of the people sometime.
D.Saying yes to other people’s requests should be forbidden for your own benefits.
【3】What is the writer’s attitude towards “saying no”?
A.Concerned. B.Suspicious. C.Supportive. D.Optimistic.
