二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The original Blade Runner film took place in an imagined Los Angeles of 2019, a futuristic city where skies were crowded with “skimmers”: flying cars that zipped along aerial highways. Since the film’s 1982 debut(首映), technology has advanced in ways that Hollywood might never have predicted.

Flying cars may seem futuristic — but from commercial jetpacks to personal air taxis, they are already here. Here’s how they could transform the way we commute, work and live.

While these aircraft may not look exactly like Blade Runner’s imaginings, they are not that far off. Far smaller than a commercial plane, most are designed with rotors (螺旋桨) instead of wings, which allow for vertical takeoffs and landings. Most importantly, these vehicles are designed to offer faster commutes than traditional modes of transit for individuals, especially in traffic-clogged cities.

At the moment, the autonomous urban aircraft market is still a bit of a Wild West. Dozens of start-up companies are competing to develop commercial jetpacks, flying motorbikes and personal air taxis. Meanwhile, aviation authorities are currently hashing out the policies and safety standards that will govern this new field of transport.

Volocopter, for instance, has marketed its VoloCity craft as the first commercially licensed electrically powered air taxi, a vehicle which will eventually be able to run without a pilot. “It’s like an Uber Black,” says Fabien Nestmann, vice president of public affairs at Volocopter. Initially, the VoloCity will only have room for a single passenger. That will mean a higher cost per ride at first. But eventually, the company’s goal is to make the cost competitive with, say, an Uber Black. “We don’t want this to be a toy for the wealthy, but rather part of a well-integrated journey for anyone in an urban area,” he says.

Increasing numbers of flying cars will naturally give rise to a changing layout in the way our cities are structured as cities grow taller, rooftop landings expand and air highways connect super sky-scrapers, freeing up space below. Fewer cars on the ground will reduce traffic jam and may give rise to parks and green spaces.

【1】Why does the author mention Blade Runner film in paragraph 1?

    A.To show an example.

    B.To lead to the topic.

    C.To express his doubts.

    D.To give background information.

【2】Which has the closest meaning to the underlined part “a Wild West” in paragraph 4?

    A.Promising

    B.Stable

    C.Immature

    D.Overdeveloped

【3】What effect will flying cars probably bring to the city?

    A.More green spaces.

    B.Severe traffic jams.

    C.Advanced sky-scrapers.

    D.Expanded air highways.

【4】What’s the best title for the passage?

    A.Blade Runner’s Imaginings Come True

B.The Number of Flying Cars Are Increasing

C.The Flying Car Is Here to Change the World

D.Autonomous Urban Aircraft Market Is Booming

  • 23、Many science fiction stories tell about explorers arriving in a new world. The explorers then use some kind of high-tech device to test for breathable air or signs of life. But here on Earth, science fiction is becoming reality through a new sampling technology called environmental DNA, or e-DNA for short. Scientists can use it to identify rare or invasive species, study bio-diversity or estimate fish populations with just a little air or water.

Ryan Kelly is an ecologist at the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at the University of Washington in Seattle. He works in a laboratory there with other researchers. They study the genetic material released by living creatures. “Essentially we can take a sample of soil or air and in our case water, and we can sequence(to arrange the order of genes)the DNA out of it and tell you what is there.

Ryan Kelly says he and his research team are studying water samples collected from Puget Sound. He says the cost of gene sequencing has “been reduced greatly in recent years.” That makes DNA testing more widely available.

Environmental DNA can be used in two ways. One is to identify the creatures that live in a certain place. The other is to confirm the presence or lack of a specific creature.

Caren Goldberg heads the new e-DNA lab at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. She is one of the first biologists in the northwestern United States to take the technology from the testing phase to actually using it.

It is extremely useful for species that are really hard to find. I have spent many hours looking for species that I was pretty sure were there — looking under rocks, looking in water, doing all kinds of surveys.”

Caren Goldberg sees e-DNA as a way to get answers more efficiently, safely and with less destruction compared to traditional survey techniques. Until recently, scientists depended on diving deep, netting or using an electric current to temporarily catch fish.

We’re absolutely at this point where proof-of-concept has been established. I don't think everyone necessarily is ready for it yet, but I think the majority of people are.”

This newer way to identify what lives in the environment is becoming popular around the world. Animal experts in Vietnam are using the e-DNA to find the last, wild Yangtze giant softshell turtles. One researcher on the Caribbean island of Trinidad is using the sampling technology to find endangered golden tree-frogs. And in Madagascar, it is being used to identify amphibian diseases.

Ms. Goldberg has used e-DNA testing to confirm the local extinction, disappearance, of a leopard frog in the American state of Idaho. She has also been asked to document the spread of the New Zealand mud-snail in the state of Washington. The creature has been found in lakes and other waterways across the state.

Now, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management wants Caren Goldberg to look for the Columbia spotted frog in two other western states. The rare amphibian is a candidate for the federal government's threatened species list.

Scientists working with the technology say they do not expect robots to replace field biologists anytime soon. But the old-fashioned field work could soon be more targeted.

A related research goal is to show how long environmental DNA can last and how far it can travel in different environments.

【1】Paragraph One is intended as _____ of the passage.

    A. the main idea

    B. the introduction of the topic

    C. a supporting detail of the main idea

    D. a contrast of the main idea

  • 24、On a sunny day last August, Daniel Malechuk opened the door to a 7,150-square-meter room just outside Atlanta. Inside, under the soft reddish purple light of LED lamps, grew five varieties of hydroponic lettuce(水栽生菜)arranged nine levels high. A handful of employees were busy harvesting the greens.Their pace matched Malechuk's dream:to grow 10 million heads of lettuce by next spring.

If they succeed, Kalera, the vertical(垂直的)farming company that began operations here in April2O2l, will not only have the largest-yield vertical farm in the Southeast, but will also be Georgia's largest lettuce producer. “This facility will produce 12 times as much lettuce in one year as the entire state can produce in the same amount of time,” Malechuk said excitedly. These farms not dependent on particular weather patterns or areas, can develop well almost anywhere, cutting down transportation costs and related release of gas, waters, etc. And importantly, they operate more cleanly, without producing much waste.

But there's a catch:indoor farms rely on the artificial light of tens of thousands of LED lights. Add to that the energy needed for climate control, water supply and other operations, and a farm like Malechuk’s can consume great amounts of energy.

LED systems have become much more efficient, but additional gains will have to come from improving the entire growing system:optimizing(优化)light methods, spacing and nutrients, and determining which varieties of plants produce the best results.

As the price of renewable energy continues to fall, supporters of vertical farming say it can become a more accessible, greener way to put food on the table. Malechuk has said making his greens affordable is an important task and that a head of Kalera lettuce sells for less than $3 in most stores.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.Malechuk’s dream.

    B.A way to harvest greens.

    C.A scene of vertical farming.

    D.The future of vertical farming.

【2】What can we learn about vertical farming from paragraph 2?

A.These farms rely on particular weather patterns.

B.Vertical farming can be adopted almost everywhere.

C.Vertical farming does great harm to the environment.

D.Vertical farming can produce 12 times more than traditional farming.

【3】Which of the following can replace the underlined word “catch”in paragraph 3?

    A.strength

    B.choice

    C.chance

    D.problem

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated (不耐烦的), to find his 5-year-old son waiting for him at the door.

"Daddy, may I ask you a question?"

"Yeah sure, what is it?" replied the man.

"Daddy, how much do you make an hour?"

"That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?" the man said angrily.

"I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour?" pleaded the little boy.

"If you must know, I make $20 an hour."

"Oh," the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, "Daddy, may I please borrow $10?"

The father was angry, "If the only reason you asked is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish (自私的). I work hard every day for such childish behavior." The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. "How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?" he thought to himself. After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. "Are you asleep, son?" he asked.

"No, daddy, I'm awake," replied the boy.

"I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier," said the man. "It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here's the $10 you asked for."

The little boy sat straight up, smiling. "Oh. Thank you, daddy!" he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled (皱巴巴的) bills.

    Paragraph 1:

The man, seeing that the boy already had money started to get angry again.
