二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a “lesson” in sorting garbage, as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations. It’s now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan. More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People’s Daily.

According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.

According to Xinhua News Agency, it’s partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste. In the past, some previous garbage regulations didn’t give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage. “It’s a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting.” Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. He also added “the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone”

Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time. In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.

1What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A.People will be fined not less than 200 yuan.

B.Shanghai works as a pioneer in garbage sorting.

C.All the cities use the same regulations as Shanghai.

C.People in Shanghai aren’t fined clearly if they fail to sort garbage now.

D.People may be put in prison because of littering in Germany.

3What can be inferred from Liu Jianguo’s words?

A.Legal guarantee is a must to promote garbage sorting.

B.There is a growing concern over garbage sorting worldwide.

C.He supports the legal regulations in garbage sorting.

D.The sorting action should be changed from compulsory to voluntary.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Hard to Recycle Appropriately

B.Serious Waste Problems in Big Cities

    C.Garbage Sorting Practice in Shanghai

  • 22、   Chinese social media apps have struggled to win over users beyond their home. TikTok is changing that. In the space of just two years, the app has attracted more than half a billion users — around 40% of them outside China --who share short videos of themselves singing, cooking, dancing or just being silly.

Created by the Beijing-based Internet technology company Byte Dance, TikTok has gained an international edge over China's influential social media platforms, such as Tencent's WeChat, Sina Weibo (WB) and Youku of Alibaba (BABA).

What makes Byte Dance better is its right direction and achievement in the social media category, which is largely controlled by Facebook ( FB) , Twitter and Snap all Western companies, said Randy Nelson , head of Mobile Insights at analytics firm Sensor Tower. Social video apps reached new levels of popularity this year. Three of them are in the top 10 most downloaded apps worldwide, according to Sensor Tower. Byte Dance owns two of the three: Vigo Video and TikTok. The other is Instagram, which belongs to Facebook.

Byte Dance calls itself an artificial intelligence company. It uses machine learning and algorithms to figure out what people like and give them more of what they want to see. the company is best known in China for the popular news app Toutiao, which was put into use in 2012. People got hooked on the app' s customized news feeds quickly. Toutiao now has more than 240 million monthly active users that spend on average 74 minutes per day on the platform.

Byte Dance' s success is attracting big investors. It's reportedly in talks with technology kingmaker SoftBank ( SFTBY) about an investment that would value it at around $75 billion, a huge jump from the $ 20 billion valuation it secured last year. That would make Byte Dance one of the world’s most valuable companies alongside Uber.

1What can be learnt about TikTok?

A.It has appealed to many foreign users.

B.It's the most popular Chinese app abroad.

C.It's the most successful app of Byte Dance.

D.It allows users to share whatever they like on it.

2What sets Byte Dance apart from other Internet technology companies overseas?

A.Support from its investors. B.Success in social video apps.

  • 24、   In colleges around the country, most students are also workers.

The reality of college can be pretty different from the images presented in movies and television. Instead of the students who wake up late, party all the time, and study only before exams, many colleges are full of students with pressing schedules of not just classes and activities, but real jobs, too.

This isn’t a temporary phenomenon. The share of working students has been on the rise since the 1970s, and one-fifth of students work year round. About one-quarter of those who work while attending school have both a full-course load and a full-time job. The arrangement can help pay for tuition (学费) and living costs, obviously. And there’s value in it beyond the direct cause: such jobs can also be critical for developing important professional and social skills that make it easier to land a job after graduation. With many employers looking for students with already-developed skill sets, on-the-job training while in college can be the best way to ensure a job later on.

But it’s not all upside. Even full-time work may not completely cover the cost of tuition and living expenses. The study notes that if a student worked a full-time job at the federal minimum wage, they would earn just over $15,000 each year, certainly not enough to pay for tuition, room, and board at many colleges without some serious financial aid. That means that though they’re sacrificing time away from the classroom, many working students will still graduate with at least some debt. And working full time can reduce the chance that students will graduate at all, by cutting into the time available for studying and attending classes.

There is little reward for attending but not finishing college. Students who end up leaving school because of difficulty in managing work and class are likely to find themselves stuck in some of the same jobs they might have gotten if they hadn’t gone at all. The difficulty of working too much while in school can create a cycle that pushes students further into debt without receiving any of the financial or career benefits.

1According to the passage, the reality of college students is that ________.

    A. they throw parties a lot B. they stay up late every night

    C. they work besides attending classes D. they pay no attention to exams

2What is the indirect cause of an increasing number of working students?

    A. The need of developing social networks.

    B. The lack of summer jobs for young adults.

    C. The chance of finding a job after graduation.

    D. The expenses of high tuition and living costs.

3We can learn from the passage that _________.

    A. working students are more likely to finish college

    B. students can cover their college expenses through working

    C. students receive a huge reward for managing work and class

    D. working while attending school may not help students get career benefits

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A. The Difficulties of Landing a Job

    B. The Struggle of Work-School Balance
