21、Chimps will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But except that, they have little instinct to help one another. Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves. Even chimp mothers regularly refuse to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food.
In the laboratory, chimps don’t naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull one plate of food for himself or, with no great effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage, he will pull at random — he just doesn’t care whether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish.
Human children, on the other hand, are naturally cooperative. From the earliest ages, they decide to help others, to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of expensive with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see a worried adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help.
There are several reasons to believe that the abilities help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomtasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests, but were considerably better at understanding the social world.
The cure of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t in what Tomasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.

23、Feynman Learning Technique
If you're not learning, you're standing still. So what's the best way to learn new subjects and identify gaps in our existing knowledge? There are four steps according to Feynman.
Teach it to a child
Take out a blank sheet of paper and write the subject you want to learn at the top. 【1】as if you were teaching it to a child. Not your smart adult friend but rather an 8-year-old who has just enough vocabulary and attention span (持续时间) to understand basic concepts and relationships.
Review
In step one, you will inevitably (不可避免地) encounter gaps in your knowledge where you're forgetting something important, are not able to explain it, or simply have trouble connecting an important concept. This is invaluable feedback because you've discovered the edge of your knowledge.【2】.
Now you know where you got stuck, go back to the source material and re — learn it until you can explain it in basic terms.
Organize and Simplify
【3】. Review them to make sure you didn't mistakenly borrow any of the jargon (术语) from the source material. Organize them into a simple story that flows.
Convey (optional)
If you really want to be sure of your understanding, run it past someone (ideally who knows little of the subject — or find that 8-year-old!).【4】.
Not only is this a wonderful recipe for learning but it' s also a window into a different way of thinking that allows you to tear ideas apart and reconstruct them from the ground up.【5】.
Importantly, approaching problems in this way allows you to understand when others don't know what they are talking about.
A.This is where the learning starts
B.However, many people think it useless
C.Now you have a set of hand-crafted notes
D.Write out what you know about the subject
E.Try to be sure what is more important when doing so
F.This leads to a much deeper understanding of the ideas and concepts
G.The final test of your knowledge is your capacity to spread it to another
24、“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
You probably heard those lines in grammar school, but do you really agree that harsh(严厉的) or negative words do not harm us? Words have power. Surely we all have had our feelings hurt by something someone said.
We may not say words to hurt others, but the way we interpret (解释) them and how we say them may cause great harm. Here’s an example
An ancient king dreamed all his teeth had fallen out. He sent for a wise man to explain his dream to him the dream means that all your relatives will die and you will be left alone! The king was very angry and threw the interpreter into prison. He then sent for another interpreter who said, “Congratulations! King! You will live many more years. In fact, you will survive all your relatives. Long Live the King!”
Both interpreters gave the same interpretation, but there was a huge difference in the way they said it.
Our speech must be understood by those who hear our words, but the way we say things and the intention behind them have as much power as the words themselves. Words can cause anger or appreciation. Which would you rather receive?
People who say harsh and negative things may not mean to harm, but have you ever known anyone who is a naysayer? They often look at the dark sides of things. They always see the glass as half empty rather than half full. How do you feel when you are around this type of person? Remember words have power. Use them wisely.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sabrina and I were in gym class together. I was quiet and kind. She was a bully(仗势欺人者). She and her friends enjoyed harassing(骚扰)me on a daily basis.
I was less than athletic. That day, we had played soccer. I not only embarrassed myself, I also made Sabrina mad — basically because she was on my team, and we didn’t win. So, in the shower, she threatened me! “I will meet you after class,” she sneered(讥笑).
Immediately class was over, I slid out the teacher’s entrance and ran to my locker where Susan, my older sister, was already waiting for me, so we could walk home together.
“What’s up with you?” she asked, noticing the look of panic in my eyes. “Sabrina!” I choked. “We lost the soccer game in gym and it was my fault.”
“Oh,” Susan simply stated. “Well,” she said, “we will walk down Seventeenth South instead of Harrison. It’s out of the way enough that Sabrina won’t find us.”
Next day, in the math classroom, Sabrina’s best friend passed me a note that stated, “At lunch, you will pay for running away!” I didn’t even look up, but I accidentally swallowed my gum and felt a severe pain in my chest. Mr. McKonkie excused me going to the nurse’s office.
Walking down the hall, I felt a slight sense of relief and freedom. But suddenly someone hit me on the shoulder from behind. “You little chicken!” Sabrina’s voice sneered. I didn’t turn around. I started running down the hall. I had no idea what she was going to do and I was extremely scared.
Sabrina was now rushing after me. At last, she caught up with me enough to kick the back of my legs, trying to knock me down. In a panic, I swung around to the stairs. Sabrina was so close to me by then that my sudden change in direction knocked her off balance and she fell down the stairs. I stood there watching her fall.
