二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It was late August when I got a call from a grandmother. She lives in Seeley Lake, Montana, and she has heard we have air purifiers (净化器) with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) air-cleaners that can help with smoke. She needs one for the baby’s room. I explained we didn’t have any and told her how to purchase one.

She coughed and went silent with disappointment before asking how much they cost. Almost every person I talk to in Seeley Lake has this cough. “The family doesn’t have much money,” she said, but she promised to order a filter for the child. Small filters—ones that can clean a bedroom of up to 75 square feet—cost about $70 each.

The next day, the wildfire that had been burning for weeks in the Lolo National Forest, northeast of town, moved closer to the woman’s neighborhood, and the county sheriff’s office evacuated (疏散) the area. I wondered whether the air-cleaner would be there when the family returned home. I knew the smoke would be.

As an air-quality specialist with the Missoula City-County Health Department in Montana, my job is to understand air pollution, control it as much as possible, and help people protect themselves from its effects. I focus on smoke management: issuing permits for outdoor burns and updating residents about what to expect from the smoke when wildfires send it our way.

Never had we seen so many wildfires so close to home for so many weeks. There are six classes on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index (指数): good, moderate, unhealthy for sensitive groups, unhealthy, very unhealthy, and dangerous. Seeley Lake’s air reached dangerous class in 18 days last summer.

Last year was troubled by wildfires around the country. The fires that struck Northern California alone killed 44 people and caused more than $9 billion in damage. But this isn’t just a recent problem, nor is it limited to the West. Wildfires hit 49 states in 2017, including a swath from Florida to Virginia. More than 9 million acres burned nationwide, compared with the yearly average of 6.5 million acres.

1Why did the grandmother make a call to the author?

    A.To prevent the wildfire.

B.To help her make a move.

C.To ask for an air purifier.

D.To get information about air pollution.

2How did the woman feel about the author’s reply?

    A.Angry. B.Hopeful.

    C.Excited. D.Disappointed.

3What’s the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 5?

    A.To add some background information.

    B.To summarize the previous paragraphs.

C.To introduce a new topic for discussion.

D.To make the readers realize the situation.

4Compared with the yearly average, the burned acres nationwide in 2017 rose by ________.

    A.about 49% B.about 38%

    C.about 72% D.about 52%

  • 23、UrbanSpace in midtown New York is a place where white-collars come for lunch during their workdays. For the past a few months, customers have always lined up before a kiosk which sells a very authentic Chinese food in north China—Jianbing,or the Chinese crepe.

The kiosk is branded "Mr.Bing",and is owned by Brian Goldberg, who is born and raised in New York.Goldberg is very involved with Chinese culture. He was a Chinese major back in college in Boston, and studied in China 20 years ago.

"When I went to China,I just love Jianbing so much.It tastes so good. It's hot. It's fresh. It's customizable. They make it how you like it.When I come back to America,I can't find it. So I make it!"said Goldberg.

Goldberg's Jianbing plan is not a whim(突发的想法).It was the theme of his business plan when he was a MBA in Columbia University. As a student,he didn't have enough funds to start. It was until five years ago that he made the first step in Hong Kong.To open the Hong Kong shop,Goldberg spent many weekends flying back and forth from Beijing,Tianjin, and Shandong Province, the origins of Chinese Jianbing.

After tasting tons,he focused on one kiosk in Beijing,Xiaoyan Jianbing, whose chef offered to teach him and his Hong Kong employees the recipe. In Hong Kong,"Mr.Bing" was fairly popular, but Goldberg always thought of going back home.

Two years ago,he moved back to New York and put himself into his Jianbing shop. Selling Jianbing to New Yorkers is surely not the same with selling them to Chinese. To cater to the taste of Americans,Goldberg applied several changes to the recipe after trial and errors.

The Jianbing as you see today at Mr.Bing's is a revised version: fried wonton skin is used to replace dough stick(油条),and a signature Chinese spicy sauce instead of fermented bean curd, and there is meat, which Americans love.

Even with one storefront,Goldberg is selling hundreds of Jianbing each day.He is confident this Chinese snack can be something."Anyway,Americans didn't know much about sushi or burritos(墨西哥玉米面卷饼)back twenty years. But now they are having them all the time."Goldberg said. The great goal of Goldberg is bringing Jianbing to the world and establishing his own signature brand with "Mr.Bing".

1Which of the following is NOT a possible factor for Americans' love of Chinese Jianbing?

    A. It tastes delicious.   B. Its price is very cheap.

    C. It is hot and fresh.   D. It has been improved.

2The underlined sentence 'It's customizable.' in Paragraph 3 means that .

    A. customers can make orders of Jianbing on the Internet

    B. customers can make Jianbing by themselves very easily

    C. it can be made according to customers' tastes and needs

    D. it can be seen distributed among every corner of the USA

3From Goldberg's experience we can conclude that .

    A. he once studied Chinese in Columbia University 20 years ago

    B. he takes possession of several storefronts in Hong Kong,China

    C. before setting up his business of Jianbing he did market research

    D. he has bought the parent of recipe from Chinese Xiaoyan Jianbing

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A. A man's duty of spreading Chinese culture

    B. Jianbing of Mr.Bing attracts New Yorkers

    C. A kind of traditional Chinese food—Jianbing

    D. Chinese snack can be something in the USA

  • 26、South Africa’s Street Store doesn’t just help to clothe the homeless, but also gives them the shopping experience of choosing what they want. With the idea to give the homeless the same dignity as customers who can pay, the Street Store sets up their pop-up cardboard shop in Cape Town, inviting customers in need to browse through the offerings and choose an outfit for themselves from the hundreds of donated items at their will.

The Street Store works closely with local council to get permission to pop-up their sidewalk shops in poor areas around Cape Town. Because of the social conditions in South Africa, over half of the children live in poverty, making the Street Store even more popular.

The Street Store displays a row of cardboard “hangers” (衣架), with boxes neatly arranged below each one. On the hangers hang shirts, T-shirts, trousers and dresses donated by the Cape Town public. In the boxes below, multiple pairs of shoes await a new owner. Street Store volunteers also act as store consultants, offering fashion advice to their customers as they try on chosen donated items.

The Street Store has already reached thousands in the Cape Town area, with over 1,000 satisfied homeless customers visiting on their first day in operation. The program gives the homeless not only a change to pick up some needed clothing, but also restores confidence by giving them a retail experience—even when pocket money doesn’t allow it.
