21、 Jerry Lawson had a love of science and invention from a very young age. And, with the support of his family and teachers, he took that love and helped change the world for billions of people, when he invented the modem video game cartridge.
Both of Jerry's parents supported his love of science and invention. His father, a longshoreman, was a science fan and encouraged Jerry to always experiment with things. Jerry's first-grade teacher helped encourage him on his path to be someone influential similar to George Washington Carver, a great African American inventor. His first love in school was chemistry but he ended up liking electronics(电子学)even more.
He earned an amateur ham radio license at age 13 and built his own radio station in his room, with an antenna hanging out of his window! Jerry earned money from fixing television sets, visiting people's homes for inhouse repair, and also working at local electronics stores. Jerry also made walkie-talkies and sold them to other kids. He spent many Saturdays at an electronics store that had all of the parts he needed for his inventions. He would use his small allowance and money he earned to buy parts to help fuel his inventions.
When he was a young adult, Jerry joined Fairchild Semiconductor as an engineer. During this time, he created his own video arcade game(街机游戏),Demolition Derby, in his garage.
A few years later, Jerry was asked to work on a secret project. Not even his boss was allowed to know what he was doing! What it turned out to be was that he was designing the Fairchild Channel F video game console (游戏控制器)and leading the team that invented the video game cartridge. This was the first of its kind and enabled kids around the world to affordably play video games at home.

22、 Parents usually teach their children how to cross the street safely, by looking both ways for cars. But do they also teach them to put away their cellphones? The city of Honolulu, Hawaii wants everyone to learn that lesson.
Texting while crossing the street will soon be banned in the city. Beginning on October 24, you will be fined from $15 to $99 if you step into a Honolulu street while looking at your phone. Honolulu is the first major U.S. city to ban what is called “distracted walking”. It recently passed a law in a seven to two vote. The law says, “No pedestrian shall cross a street or highway while viewing a mobile electronic device.” In other words, do not look at a screen when you cross the street or you could be fined.
The law’s creators hope it will lower the number of people hit and killed by cars in the city. Mayor Kirk Caldwell told the Reuters News agency,“We hold the unfortunate distinction of being a major city with more pedestrians being hit in crosswalks, particularly our seniors, than almost any other city in the country.
The law includes all electronic devices with screens: cellphone, tablets, gaming devices, digital cameras and laptop computers. The law does permit an exception. Pedestrians may use such devices in the street to call emergency services and rescue workers, such as firefighters and police officers.
The Governors Highway Safety Association, or GHSA, says as the use of cell phones rises, pedestrian deaths in the United States increased 25 percent between 2010 and 2015. That trend continued in 2016 with the number of pedestrian deaths rising to almost 6000, 11% higher than in 2015.
Other U.S. cities may follow Honolulu. The state of Washington was the first to outlaw distracted driving back in 2007. Now, 46 other states as well as D. C. , Puerto Rico, Guam and the U. S.Virgin Islands, have laws against texting while driving, reports the GHSA.
If you still want to text while walking, you could avoid being fined in Honolulu by using a voice-controlled digital assistant such as Siri or Google Assistant. Or you could just wait until you are again, safely, off the street.

23、More than 200m print books were sold in the UK last year, the first time since 2012 that number has been exceeded(超过), according to official book sales monitor Nielsen BookScan.
Although the coronavirus pandemic(新冠病毒大流行) caused a series of lockdowns(封锁) around the country-bookshops in England were closed from 23 March until 15 June, and then again from 5 November until 2 December, with differing lockdowns in place around the rest of the UK-Nielson said that print books sales grew by 5.2% compared with 2019. This means 202m books worth £1.76bn being sold in the UK last year, said Nielsen.
At Waterstones, Kate Skipper called the numbers really exciting which gave her huge confidence again. “So many people have turned to books for information and joy through this difficult year,” said Skipper. “Our shops were asked to stay shut, but when we were able to safely open again, readers really wanted to browse(浏览) and discover new books,” she said.
Kiera O’Brien, charts & data editor at The Bookseller, said book buyers seemed to be “making the effort to go to high street(繁华的商业街区) and independent bookshops while they could, and spending a lot of money in one go.” She added that “the growth was very much spread across the board, with no single standout bestseller(畅销书) driving the market upwards.”
But Nicola Solomon at the Society of Authors said that despite the strong overall performance, many authors were still struggling. “Book sales are up. We just don’t believe they are up across the board,” she said. “Big names, series, even some newcomers have done well, but plenty of people have suffered.”
The Society of Authors’ emergency fund for authors facing financial hardship has given out £1.3m to date, to just over 1,000 authors, and will continue to support writers in trouble as a result of the pandemic.

24、Worried about the effect reality TV is having on your child? You aren't being overprotective-there's increasing evidence that these programmes can have a big impact on young people.
When our children are young,we tend to give careful thought to how much TV they're watching and whether or not it's good for them. But as they grow up, most parents let their kids make more independent choices about their viewing.
However, if you've got children, you may want to stay attentive. A research indicates that some reality TV shows can be every bit as damaging for teenage girls as too many cartoons are for kids-perhaps even worse.
The truth is that reality TV is anything but reality-but that's not necessarily what our children believe.A study for the Girl Scout Research Institute in the US found that eight out of ten girls aged between 11 and 17 who regularly watch reality shows believe these programmes describe real life.
In fact, much of reality TV is a heavily manipulated(操控)view of what's really happening, and the worst of it strengthens the sort of female stereotypes(刻板印象)women have spent decades trying to remove.
Many of the women on reality TV shows are acting out lives as teenage mothers or drama queens.Strong,hard-working,purposeful young women with ambitions beyond their looks are rare in these programmes. There's a widespread emphasis on the value of women being about how they look and dress, which gives young viewers the message that being a woman is all about style and appearance, not what you do or stand for.
Cultural critic and writer Jennifer Pozner describes reality TV as "the contemporary backlash(抵制)against feminism".Imran Siddiguee,Director of Social Media and Outreach, is concerned that these programmes show the worst stereotypes of womanhood and “normalize" them in what appear to be everyday settings."They offer such a limited view of what it is to be a woman, and all over the world young girls are addicted to it,"he says.
Siddiquee does recognize, however, that many girls themselves value reality TV.Some say it encourages them to think about situations different from their own. They also point out that some shows feature women running their own successful businesses.
"It's important to acknowledge that there are some useful elements in reality TV,"Siddiquee says."But many girls need to be inspired to think more critically about some aspects of these shows so they're not manipulated by them and so their behaviour doesn't change because of them."
We should encourage our children to be critical thinkers and help them develop their media literacy. Whether reality TV is changing our children's views, or whether they are attracted to programmes that agree with their beliefs, it's vital we recognize that their viewing habits could strengthen these unbalanced ideals.

【4】Imran Siddquee believes that.
A.it is normal to include stereotypes of females in reality TV shows
