21、A new study finds constantly engaging in negative thinking patterns may increase the risk of dementia (痴呆). In the study of people aged over 55. Researchers found repetitive negative thinking (RNT) was linked to memory decline as well as the deposition of harmful brain pro-reins linked to dementia.
Lead author Dr Natalie Mar chant said, “Depression and anxiety in mid-life and old age are already known to be risk factors for dementia. Here, we found that certain thinking patterns involved in depression and anxiety could be an underlying reason why people with those d is orders are more likely to develop dementia.”
Over a period of two years, the study participants responded to questions about how they typically think about negative experiences, focusing on RNT patterns like reflection on the past and worry about the future. The participants also completed measures of depression and anxiety symptoms. Their cognitive function was assessed, measuring memory, attention, spatial cognition and language. Some of the participants also underwent PET brain scans, measuring deposits of two proteins which cause the most common type of dementia, when they build up in the brain.
The researchers found that people who exhibited higher RNT patterns experienced more cognitive de c lines over a four-year period and de c lines in memory, which are among the earlier signs of dementia, and they were more likely to have protein deposits in their brain. “We think that repetitive negative thinking may be a new risk factor for dementia as it could con-tribute to dementia in a unique way,” said Dr Marchant.
Co-author Dr Gael Chételat commented, “Our thoughts can have a biological impact on our physical health, which might be positive or negative. Mental training practiced such as deep thought might help promote positive thinking, and down-regulate negative associated mental plans. Looking after your mental health is important, and it should be a major public health priority, as it ' not only important for your health and well-being, but it could also impact your eventual risk of dementia.”

22、February 4, 2012 saw the take-off of a new rising NBA star-Jeremy Lin.
Among professional basketball players, Jeremy Lin's background is not typical. He graduated from Harvard University, which sends few players to the NBA, and he is the only Chinese-American NBA player. But when you watch him on the court, there is no doubt that he belongs there. He moves with speed and grace that demonstrate years of faithful practice, which is fueled by a love for basketball.
Lin's enjoyment of basketball actually began in Taiwan. When Lin's father moved to U.S., his interest in the sport only grew and he passed on this love of basketball to his son, introducing him to the game at the age of five. The young Lin spent much of his youth playing basketball for fun.
In high school, Lin dreamed of playing in the NBA. When he applied for college, he was not offered a single sports scholarship. However, after his admission to Harvard, he was offered a place on its college basketball team.
During Lin's time at Harvard, his basketball career began to speed up. He scored 1,482 points, making him one of the highest scorers in Ivy League history.
When he graduated, no professional teams offered Lin a contract, but he was invited to play in the NBA Summer League. He played well and ended up eagerly signing a contract with the Golden State Warriors.
At first, playing in professional games filled Lin with excitement. He treasured opportunities to meet players he had been watching on TV for years. But slowly, the excitement wore off and was replaced by anxiety. In a few very difficult months, he was cut by two teams before the New York Knicks picked him up.
But he had the courage and determination to stick to his dream, so he put himself into hard training to get ready for his opportunity to come. Then his moment arrived on February 4, 2012,on which his excellent performance made him famous overnight. After that, he led the Knicks to their fifth straight victory.
The Associated Press called Lin "the most surprising story in the NBA". Knicks fans developed the nickname for him "Linsanity" (林来疯). Time magazine released its 2012 list of the 100 "Most Influential People in the World", Jeremy Lin included.
No doubt, Lin fever is continuing to spread. If you haven't already caught "Linsanity", get ready.

23、My heart sank when the man at the immigration counter gestured to the back room. I was born and raised in America, and this was Miami, where I live, but they weren’t quite ready to let me in yet.
“Please wait in here, Ms Abujaber,” the immigration officer said. My husband, with his very American last name, accompanied me. He was getting used to this. The same thing had happened recently in Canada when I’d flown to Montreal to speak at a book event. That time they held me for 45 minutes. Today we were returning from a literary festival in Jamaica, and I was startled that I was being sent “in back” once again.
The officer behind the counter called me up and said, “Miss, your name looks like the name of someone who’s on our wanted list. We’re going to have to check you out with Washington.”
“How long will it take?”
“Hard to say ... a few minutes,” he said. “We’ll call you when we’re ready for you.” After an hour, Washington still hadn’t decided anything about me. “Isn’t this computerized?”
I asked at the counter. “Can’t you just look me up?”
Just a few more minutes, they assured me.
After an hour and a half, I pulled my cell phone out to call the friends I was supposed to meet that evening. An officer rushed over. “No phones!” he said. “For all we know you could be calling a terrorist cell and giving them information.”
“I’m just a university professor,” I said. My voice came out in a squeak.
“Of course you are. And we take people like you out of here in leg irons every day.”
I put my phone away.
My husband and I were getting hungry and tired. Whole families had been brought into the waiting room, and the place was packed with excitable children, exhausted parents, even a flight attendant.
I wanted to scream, to jump on a chair and shout: “I’m an American citizen; a novelist; I probably teach English literature to your children.” Or would that all be counted against me?
After two hours in detention, I was approached by one of the officers. “You’re free to go,” he said. No explanation or apologies. For a moment, neither of us moved, we were still in shock.
Then we leaped to our feet.
“Oh, one more thing.” He handed me a tattered photocopy with an address on it. “If you weren’t happy with your treatment, you can write to this agency.”
“Will they respond?” I asked.
“I don’t know --- I don’t know of anyone who’s ever written to them before.” Then he added, “By the way, this will probably keep happening each time you travel internationally.”
“What can I do to keep it from happening again?”
He smiled the empty smile we’d seen all day. “Absolutely nothing.”
After telling several friends about our ordeal, probably the most frequent advice I’ve heard in response is to change my name. Twenty years ago, my own graduate school writing professor advised me to write under a pen name so that publishers wouldn’t stick me in what he called “the ethnic ghetto” --- a separate, secondary shelf in the bookstore. But a name is an integral part of anyone’s personal and professional identity -just like the town you’re born in and the place where you’re raised.
Like my father, I’ll keep the name, but my airport experience has given me a whole new perspective on what diversity and tolerance are supposed to mean. I had no idea that being an American would ever be this hard.

24、Kairo McLean was waiting for his mom to pick him up from school. She arrived with the car windows down, playing Kairo's song Easy Now as loud as the sound could go. That was when she informed him that he was nominated (提名)for the Juno Awards, one of Canada's most influential music awards, for Reggae Recording of the Year. At age 13, Kairo was the youngest artist ever nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year at the JUNOS. His Juno- nominated single Easy Now appears on his first-ever album(歌曲专辑)of the same title.
“I’m so glad that reggae music, which is originally from Jamaica(牙买加), is being rec- ognized and appreciated here in Canada, ”Kairo said in an interview. “It's really exciting that all my efforts have been recognized in spite of my young age, and it motivates me to keep struggling hard to realize my musical dream, ”he said.
“Kairo would try to play the keyboard before he was tall enough to reach it. He wanted to learn how to play the guitar before it could even fit on his lap, ”Kairo's mom recalled. “Listening to music from reggae music artists like Cocoa Tea, Yellowman and Bob Marley is a normal thing in our household. Apart from that, he really put many efforts in his interest, ” she added.
As a Canadian reggae artist outside of Jamaica, Kairo feels that music should spread a message about love and peace, not things like violence and hate. Kairo’s music is about bright light in the world, though we might be always caught in the darkness such as bullies(仗势欺人者)at school or crime in the society. “I bring up the injustices that I see in the world and I talk about them because they need to be spoken about and they need to be heard, ”said Kairo.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was somewhere between spring and summer,my mom and I were driving through the countryside.Back then,I was 13 years old,and always felt unhappy with Morn. But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car.
Suddenly,in the middle of nowhere,my mom pulled over.“What are you doing?”I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there,so far from home. But that wasn’t the case.My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.“It’ll just be a minute,”she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home.I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed,as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask,“Do you know someone there?”She shook her head.“Then what did you do with the flowers?”She smiled slightly,“I gave them to the receptionist.”“What?”She laughed at my confusion.“I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving,I spoke again,“Did you leave your name?”To this she answered instantly,“No.Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds,I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down!Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it,and we didn’t know where the garage was.It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by,since we had seen so few along the way.
