From a lack of air and drinking water to solar radiation, theoretical Mars pioneers face any number of potential obstacles to settling on the red planet. Now, scientists have found something else to add to the list: seriously messed-up biological clocks.
One day on Mars - which scientists refer to as the solar day, or“sol”- is 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. A team of European scientists recently demonstrated why that could be a problem.
Circadian rhythms are the body’s natural cycles of rest and waking, which tend to follow roughly 24-hour light-dark cycles. These natural rhythms - which play a role in biological functions including brain wave activity and hormone production - can be interrupted by things like jet lag(时差)and night shift work.
For the study, the researchers compared mice with healthy, 24-hour circadian clocks to mice with a genetic change that caused them to have shorter, 20-hour circadian clocks. The mice with healthy biological clocks were more likely to survive and reproduce, while the mice with shorter biological clocks were more likely to die off.
What does this all have to do with space travel? Since the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth, people with shorter circadian clocks could suffer from health problems as they try to adapt to the rotational speed of the red planet.
Unfortunately, the body is unlikely to adapt to the new conditions or“learn”to develop a longer clock. As Loudon explained,“Learning is not a likely option.”
In other words: Sorry, super-early risers - NASA might not want you for the next Mars mission.

Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are book-lover or only there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find a shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason is, you can soon be totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon become attracted in some books or others, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointments.
This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop. A bookshop is very much like a music shop. You can wander round such a place to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting “Can I help you?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the back ground until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.
Once a medical student had to read a text book which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn’t obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a certain bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop beckoning to him. Expecting to be told off, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was tucked away in a corner. “I put it there in case anyone was tempted to buy it!” he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading.
【1】According to the passage ,the main attraction of a bookshop is ______ .
A. the chance to get free from the reality
B. learning something from the books
C. a shelter from a sudden shower
D. the surrounding of books
【2】The writer thinks that the assistant in a bookshop should ______.
A. greet customers pleasantly and warmly
B. not disturb the customers when they read
C. help the readers to find what they want
D. not stay in the background all the time
23、 In a new study published on the Journal of Auian Biology, researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico tracked the behavior of house finches(雀) on the main campus of the university, in Mexico City.
The team created an artificial nest lining(内衬), which includes feathers, cotton, hair and cigarette ends. Then, after the birds 'eggs had hatched, they replaced the original lining with the new one, to make sure the nests were pest free. The researchers then added live ticks to the mix, while dead ticks were added to other linings.
It seems that urban house finches use more cigarette ends to line their nests when they've been invaded by ticks. And, those whose nests were given live ticks increased their cigarette end weight by about 40 percent more than those where dead ticks had been used, according to New Scientist. The technique is likely a form of self-medication, the experts explain, as it's thought that the chemicals in cigarette ends can help to keep off the pests.
While this behavior may have its benefits, the researchers say it's also possible that the use of cigarette ends in the nests could have negative effects. "It is a matter of concern that cigarette ends, being poisonous, are part of house finch nests in Mexico City," the authors explain in the paper," but we have not come across evidence of long-term costs of using this material."
According to the researchers, a thorough evaluation will be necessary to determine the real effects of using cigarette ends, whether they are positive or not. But they explain, the findings do suggest that the cigarette ends are linked to the presence of ticks and likely play a role in keeping them away.
【1】What does the underlined phrase" the mix" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The former nests. B.The artificial lining.
C.The cigarette ends. D.The original lining.
【2】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The findings of the experiment. B.The application of the research findings.
C.The theory related to the recent research. D.The reasons for house finches using cigarette ends.
【3】What did house finches do when live ticks were found in their nests?
A.Eat them out. B.Dust them off.
C.Build firmer nests. D.Use more cigarette ends.
【4】Which word best describes the author's attitude to the study?
A.Skeptical. B.Conservative. C.Objective. D.Tolerant.
24、UK consumers spent a record £7.2bn in 2017 on all forms of music, video and games, for CDs, DVDs, and vinyl records(黑胶唱片)to console(控制台)software and subscriptions to music and TV streaming services. That surpassed the £7.1bn spent by consumers on “printed word” books, magazines and newspapers for the first time, according to figures published by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).
The research, prepared by the Leisure Industries Research Centre (LIRC) at Sheffield Hallam University, credits the “dramatic growth” in the popularity of paid-for digital services such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Deezer and Spotify as the key factor behind booming sales of entertainment.
ERA Chief Executive Officer Kim Bayley said: “It is an extraordinary proof of the appeal of digital entertainment services that they have helped home entertainment to this milestone since the invention of the printing press.
“The success of the UK entertainment market is ultimately the result of collaboration between the creatives, studios and labels that produce compelling(扣人心弦的)content and the retailers and services that bring it to the public.
Dr. Themis Kokolakakis from the LIRC added: “The 2008-2009 recession hurt both the entertainment and reading market. Since 2012, the entertainment market has recovered very strongly, producing record 2017 results.
“Traditional media is under pressure, partly because of the growth of streaming services, partly because there is so much competition for people’s time and attention. Entertainment has grown while reading has stagnated(停滞).”
The ERA said the statistics showed the dramatic change in consumer habits as they shifted form buying physical products to digital consumption and formats.
Five years ago, 80% of revenues were generated by “buy to own” formats such as DVDs and CDs. Now 56% of revenues come from digital sources including video streaming, electronic movie rental, subscriptions, online multiplayer games and in-app and mobile purchases.
Two physical products, however, have bucked the downward sales trend. The vinyl revival(重新流行)is still going strong with sales up 34 percent to £87.7m. Sales of boxed software for games consoles have also made a comeback, rising by 5% to £750m- the first growth in a decade.
The ERA’s Bayley commented: “Digital services may be grabbing the headlines, but physical retailers continue to identify new opportunities to drive sales of discs.
“Vinyl is a prime example of retailers nurturing demand for a product most people had long written off. It would be foolish to underestimate consumers’ continuing affection for the physical products.”
【1】What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.There are various entertainments for UK consumers.
B.The printing press has to find ways to satisfy consumers.
C.More attention must be paid to the development of traditional media.
D.Revenues from entertainment are more than those of the printed word in 2017.
【2】According to the LIRC, what plays a critical role in the increase of home-entertainment consuming?
A.The growth of digital services.
B.The change in people’s consumption habits.
C.The economic support from the government.
D.The improvement of people’s living standards.
【3】The underlined sentence in Paragraph 9 implies that ______.
A.the sales of some physical products have gone up
B.the popularity of digital services falls into decline
C.the entertainment market has recovered strongly
D.the prices of some traditional media have been reduced
【4】What can we infer from Bayley’s words in the last two paragraphs?
A.It is not wise for the public to ignore traditional media.
B.It is not easy to win the public’s affection for physical products.
C.There will be a rise in consumer spending on physical products.
D.Retailers of physical products have made efforts to push the sales of vinyl up.
