21、 Every new parent knows that rocking can calm that uneasy baby when it’s time to take a nap. But the benefits of gentle movement may go beyond the baby stage. Because two new studies show that rocking also helps grown-ups, both human and mouse, get a good night’s sleep.
What should be no surprise is that movement can calm someone. Think of how many times you’ve fallen asleep on a train. But can motion really cause a nap, and make for a deeper sleep?
To find out, researchers invited 18 healthy volunteers for a sleepover. “So they came to the lab and slept one time on the motionless, normal bed. And one night where they got rocked.” said Aurore Perrault, a sleep researcher at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. “And what we find is that when compared to a motionless night, a whole night of rocking sleep has a beneficial effect not only on sleep beginning but also on sleep continuity. “Subjects who were rocked also did better on a memory test the next morning than the stiller sleepers.
In the second study, Kompotis, a student at the University of Lausanne, rocked a group of mice. “Whether rocking affects sleep in other species was never before discussed. So the main questions for our study were whether rocking affects sleep in mice and what is the possible system? ”
Kompotis placed the mouse cages on a platform that moved from side to side. Though mice were rocked four times faster than their human counterparts—a frequency of one back-and-forth per second, or 1 Hertz, worked best—the results were strikingly similar. “During rocking at 1 Hertz, time spent asleep increased, and mice fell asleep twice as fast as at still condition.” However, additional studies could allow the researchers to identify a new aim for treating sleep disorders, including insomnia (失眠).
If you want a good night’s sleep, you might think about adding a little swing to your night-time routine.
【1】What’s the purpose of the second study in the passage?
A.To do research on the sleep system of other species.

A.Their sleeping time went up when rocked at 1 Hertz.
B.Their sleep disorder including insomnia was treated.
C.When rocked, they fell asleep four times faster than at still condition.
D.When rocked, they slept faster than their human counterparts.
【3】What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Rocking Helps Grown-ups Sleep Too.
B.Deep Sleep Needs the Constant Swing.
C.Rocking Greatly Affects Deep Sleep.
D.Rocking Can Treat Sleep Disorders.
22、There is a tread in travelling that is sweeping the nation— it’s being called voluntourism. Foreign destinations are attracting American citizens who want to sightsee, while at the same time engage in community service.
Photos on a wall are of recent visits to an orphanage(孤儿院) in India. It’s a trip Jim Inners first made after looking a more meaningful way to see the world. Through the Austin-based Miracle Foundation, Inners has traveled to India three times as part of a growing trend called voluntourism, which combines foreign travel with charity work.
“You’re living. You’re not just sending a check to help somebody but you have a little girl, a little boy. You’re their life line to a new life.” said Inners
Silicon Labs co-founder Nav Sooch recently raised money to build a village for orphans in India and has traveled there several times. He says it’s possible to sightsee and serve the needy.
“I think it would be a shame to go to India and not see the Taj Mahal. It’s a wonderful place and I think you can have that as well as the real interaction with real people.” said Sooch.
“We’ve had all ages. We’ve had from 21/2 with a family all the way up to an 82-year-old and that’s the beauty of these trips.” says Barbara Joubert. She plans the 9-day journeys on behalf of the Miracle Foundation. She says it appeals to those who want to give back. “So the most basic work or what you’re doing there is loving the kids and it’s not hard.” said Joubert.
“Spending time with all these kids has been wonderful.” says Inners. Voluntourism will take Jim Inners back to “Pinky”, the girl who calls him Papa Jim.

23、 Last winter, I visited my sister and brother-in-law’s house and had to park in a nearby parking lot because they didn’t have accessible parking. The snow was extremely heavy and there was lots of ice on the ground — not many people had ventured out that evening!
When I returned to my car around 11pm, I noticed that only my car was left there. Nervously, I quickly got into the car and let it warm up a bit. When I finally tried to drive away, my wheels began to spin. I was stuck! I spun and spun and wondered what to do.
All of a sudden, in my rear view mirror (后视镜), I saw four teen-aged boys approaching my car. They were walking side by side in a line and dressed a bit like gang members — at least I thought that’s what they looked like. My car was in a very isolated area and I began to panic. I was certain they were coming to my car to harm me. Terrified, I just froze. One of the young men tapped on my window and said “Excuse me, Ma’am, can we help you? You seem stuck.” Still afraid and fearing the worst, I said “I am stuck.” And the young man said “It’s okay, stay in your car and we’ll push you out of the snow.” And they did!
When they finally got me out of the snow, they smiled and waved. I rolled down my window and thanked them, embarrassed to have judged them so poorly.

25、Though people have discussed the relationship between science and nature for many years, there is no consensual(统一的) explanation. While some view science as a powerful tool in ______ nature’s source of power, others view it as a danger. One example is Barry Commoner’s article, Unraveling(解开) the DNA Myth, which explains the recent developments in DNA technology and expresses ______. Another example is Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, The Birthmark. It is a tale about a famous scientist, Aylmer, who seems to be unraveling nature’s deepest secrets one by one. Despite all of his ______ and vast understanding of science, Aylmer is unable to direct that knowledge into ______ free from nature’s grasp. He was unable to rid his wife of her birthmark and, in the end, killed her.
Despite the different presentations of the concepts, though time separated the two men, both pieces express a similar view on the relationship between science and nature. Both pieces suggest that nature is ______ and holds wonders, secrets, and powers that many scientists constantly dream about discovering. Although there is a gap of one hundred and sixty years, Commoner still shares and gives evidence to Hawthorne’s beliefs that there is a unique ______ in nature that cannot be discovered or understood through science and that the ______ to uncover nature’s secrets are ______ and can lead to disaster. According to Commoner, nature’s universal power continues to prevent and control their discoveries. Commoner criticizes and ______ doubt on the true power of science.
As Commoner’s article suggests, nature only allows science to have limited power and success. Both men believe that complete trust in science is ______, however wonderful and groundbreaking some scientific discoveries are. Commoner believes that people only seem to focus on the few achievements, while avoiding and ignoring all of the laws. For example, “most clones exhibit developmental failure before or soon after birth”. By stressing all of the ______ and shortcomings of science, he conveys the notion that nature’s secrets are well kept and far from being understood and ______ by man. The government and private companies have invested billions of dollars in mapping the human genome, but we still have no ______ for it. Such a discovery is useless, however interesting it might be.
Commoner’s article clearly represents science as weak and useless, but more importantly, dangerous. It gives evidence to support the suggested dangers ______ with science’s attempts to discover nature’s power. If the result is not ______ dangerous, it can still have harmful side effects.
