二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The production and distribution of food accounts for around a third of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions (排放). But as a consumer? It’s difficult to measure the climate impact of what you eat.

A Dublin-based startup called Evocco could soon make it much easier. It lets users track and improve the climate impact of your food purchases. Users simply photograph their grocery receipts using the Evocco app, which identifies the food products by reading the printed text and using machine learning. It then calculates the carbon footprint based on the store’s location and by checking the type, weight and origin o£ a food against a database. The database is maintained by Eaternity, a life cycle assessment company based in Switzerland. If the receipt doesn’t contain enough data on a product, it will give an estimate based on similar products and reference points.

The app is available for free on iOS and Android devices, which has been downloaded more than 1,000 times since its launch at the end of last year. As well as the personal shopping app — which Evocco hopes to launch in the United States by the end of this year — the company is developing a digital tool to sell to food storekeepers, e-commerce platforms and delivery apps that will track the climate impact of a product’s journey through the supply chain. The aim is to help storekeepers provide climate impact information directly to consumers, and more importantly, to give Evocco access to product data to improve its app.

The Evocco app is not the only app looking to reach this climate-conscious market. There’s Capture, which estimates monthly CO2 emissions by asking users a series of questions on diet, transport and other factors, as well as Yayzy and My Carbon Action, which link to a user’s bank account, calculating their footprint from trade.

【1】What is the Evocco app designed to do?

A.Confirm the origin of food products.

B.Work out the climate effect of food.

    C.Collect varieties of grocery receipts.

    D.Monitor customers’ shopping practices.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The product.

    B.The receipt.

    C.Evocco.

    D.Eaternity.

【3】What do we know about the company Evocco from Paragraph 3?

A.It profits a great deal from its app.

B.It has launched its app in America.

C.It is trying to get its app improved.

D.It prefers to sell its app to storekeepers.

【4】What does the last paragraph imply?

A.The Evocco app is still far from satisfactory.

B.Smart tools make tracking carbon footprint easier.

C.Present digital markets should be strictly restricted.

D.Environmental awareness boosts food industry rapidly.

  • 22、   Our house was across the street from a big hospital, so we rented our spare upstairs room to outpatients (门诊病人). One evening, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly sick-looking man.

His face looked terrible — it was swollen and red. Yet his voice was pleasant. He told me that he came for treatment and that he’d been hunting for a spare room since noon, but no one would give him one. “I guess it’s my face...”

For a moment, I hesitated, but his next words convinced me: “I will sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.”

The old man had a huge heart inside his tiny body. He told me that he fished for a living to support his daughter, his daughter’s five children and her disabled husband.

He didn’t complain while telling me his story. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was seemingly a form of skin cancer.

The next morning, he said, “Can I come back and stay next time I need treatment?” I told him he was welcome to come again.

On his next trip, as a gift, he brought a big fish and some large oysters (牡蛎). In the years that he stayed with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us gifts like these.

My neighbour warned me that I could lose potential renters after the old man left.

Maybe we did lose renters once or twice. But if they had known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear. I know our family will always be grateful to have known him. From him, we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude.

【1】Why did the author let the old man stay after hesitation?

A.The old man looks terrible and frightening.

B.The old man is pitifully undemanding.

C.The old man could’t rent room from others.

D.The old man talked happily with the author.

【2】Which of the following shows the old man had a big heart?

A.He had a large family to raise.

B.He could sleep in a rocking chair.

C.He did’t care about his disease.

D.He wanted to come back and stay the next time.

【3】What can we learn about the author from the last two paragraphs?

A.He was grateful for the neighbour’s warning.

B.He and his neighbor are good friends.

C.He truly appreciated the old man.

    D.He lost potential renters happily.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text ?

    A.Kindness makes the world beautiful.

    B.Happiness is around the corner.

    C.No pains, No gains.

    D.Live positively.

  • 23、As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease—especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight, but does not eat very nutritious (有营养的) foods, who feels OK but exercises only occasionally, who goes to work every day, but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill. He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.

The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely “not ill” and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body’s special needs. Both types have simply been called “well.” In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms “well” and “wellness” only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their health. People who are well are concerned with nutrition and exercise, and they make a point of monitoring their body’s condition. Most importantly, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health. Even people who have a physical disease or handicap (缺陷) may be “well”, In this new sense, if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations. “Wellness” may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of wellness can have a beneficial impact on the ways in which people face the challenges of daily life.

【1】In the first paragraph, people are reminded that ________.

A.good health is more than not being ill

B.drinking, even if not to excess, could be harmful

C.regular health checks are essential to keeping fit

D.prevention is more difficult than cure

    【2】Traditionally, a person is considered“well”if he ________.

A.does not have any unhealthy living habits

B.does not have any physical handicaps

C.is able to handle his daily routines

D.is free from any kind of disease

【3】According to the author, the true meaning of“wellness”is for people ________.

A.to best satisfy their body’s special needs

B.to strive to maintain the best possible health

C.to meet the strictest standards of bodily health

D.to keep a proper balance between work and leisure

【4】According to what the author advocates, which of the following groups of people would be considered healthy?

A.People who have strong muscles as well as slim figures.

B.People who are not presently experiencing any symptoms of disease.

C.People who try to be as healthy as possible, regardless of their limitations.

D.People who can recover from illness even without seeking

  • 24、Every day, it seems that some new algorithm (算法) enables computers to diagnose a disease with unprecedented accuracy, renewing predictions that computer's will soon replace doctors. What if computers could replace patients as well? If virtual humans could have replaced real people in some stages of a coronavirus vaccine trial, it could have sped development of a preventive tool and slowed down the pandemic. Similarly, potential vaccines that weren't likely to work could have been identified early, reducing trial costs and avoiding testing poor vaccine candidates on living volunteers. These are some of the benefits of “in silico medicine”, or the testing of drugs and treatments on virtual organs or body systems to predict how a real person will respond to the therapies.

The modeling begins by feeding anatomical data drawn from noninvasive (非侵入式) high- resolution imaging of an individual's actual organ into a complex mathematical model of the mechanisms that govern that organ's function. Algorithms running on powerful computers resolve the resulting equations and unknowns, generating a virtual organ that looks and behaves like the real thing.

In silico clinical trials are already underway to an extent. Heart Flow Analysis, for instance, enables clinicians to identify CAD (冠心病) based on CT images of a patient's heart. The Heart Flow system uses these images to construct a fluid dynamic model of the blood running through the coronary blood vessels, thereby identifying abnormal conditions and their severity. Without this technology, doctors would need to perform an invasive operation to decide whether and how to intervene. Experimenting on digital models of individual patients can also help personalize therapy for any number of conditions and is already used in diabetes care.

The philosophy behind in silico medicine is not new. The ability to create and simulate the performance of an object under hundreds of operating conditions has been a cornerstone of engineering for decades, such as for designing electronic circuits, airplanes and buildings. Various obstacles remain to its widespread implementation in medical research and development.

The predictive power and reliability of this technology must be confirmed, and that will require several advances. Those include the generation of high quality medical databases from a large, ethnically diverse patient base that has both women and men; improvement of mathematical models to account for the many interacting processes in the body; and further modification of Al methods that were developed mainly for computer-based speech and image recognition and need to be extended to provide biological insights.

In recent years American and European regulators have approved some commercial uses of computer-based diagnostics, but meeting regulatory demands requires considerable time and money. Creating demand for these computer-based diagnostic tools is challenging as well. In silico medicine must be able to deliver cost-effective value for patients, clinicians and health care organizations to accelerate their adoption of the technology.

【1】According to the text, “in silico medicine” might help ________.

A.discover the cause of an illness

B.quicken the creation of new medicine

C.recognize the symptoms of a disease earlier

D.avoid including unhealthy volunteers in trials

【2】We can learn from the text that Heart Flow Analysis ________.

    A.works effectively in CAD treatment

    B.offers personalized therapies to patients

C.reduces the chances of invasive operations

D.builds models after identifying abnormal conditions

【3】According to the author, further application of “in silico medicine” requires ________.

A.money and time from the regulators

    B.replacement of old mathematical models

C.more proof of its effectiveness and dependability

D.progress in speech and image recognition technology

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.Looking to Al to End Experimental Study

B.In Silico Medicine Saved Millions of Lives

C.Exploring the Future of Algorithm in Medicine

    D.Virtual Patients Could Revolutionize Medicine

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成篇完整的短文。

I drove to my home. I was waiting for the traffic light. The light turned green but the car in front of me didn’t move forward. The driver began to turn around as something was blocking his path and sped off. I began to do the same when I realized a man in a wheelchair blocked the way. In fact, I recognized him as one of my follow classmates whom I had seen many times over the past four years, but never spoken to.

But I was in a hurry because I had an important thing to do. I began to drive off. I glanced in my rearview mirror (后视镜) and saw the man struggling to get his chair out of the muddy crossing.

Surely someone else will help him, I thought. But what if everyone else thought that, too? I stopped.

His name was Jordan. His cerebral palsy (脑瘫) affected his speech. I knew if l was going to help him, it meant pushing him to wherever he was going, in the rain, in the mud.

I locked my car and quickly caught up to him. I began to push. It was uphill for what seemed like a mile. Every hundred yards or so, with great effort, Jordan would turn around his head so that he could look up at me in appreciation.

At the end of our long trip to Jordan’s apartment, both of us were in sweat. I couldn’t believe that Jordan had managed to do this alone, every day for four years. I blew up every time I couldn’t find a parking space close enough to my classes! Jordan insisted that I come in and dry off. He said there was someone he wanted me to meet.
