二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   We all have strong memories of our first few days at primary school. Nowadays most children go to pre-schools, so it is not such a shock to the education system for them as it was for the children of the 1960s!

In the 1960s there were no pre-schools, so for most children just turning 5 years old, their first day at school was the first time that they had been away from home on their own. Most mothers did not work outside the homeso for many children this was also the first time that they had been apart from their mothers. So the first day of school was a very tearful event for both children and parents!

Having got over the sudden pain of separation, school life soon fell into a daily routine (常规). School milk was part of this routine, they were often forced—“milk is good for you, you must drink it up!”

The radio played a great part in the education of school children in the 1960s. “Music and Movement” was one programme, during which children leapt (跳跃) under the order of it. Another programme was “Singing Together” where the class would sing traditional folk songs together.

Class sizes in the 1950s and early 1960s were large, often over 30 children in a class. There were no classroom assistants, just the class teachers.

In the 1960sit was “talk and chalk” education—the teacher in the front of the class and the children sitting at desks facing the board. Handwriting was very important and practiced daily. Nature study was popular and often only science was taught at primary school. Children were asked to bring things such as leaves and seeds for teachers and then teachers used them to teach children art.

1What can we know about the five-year-old children in the 1960s?

A.They went to pre-schools for free.

B.They had little time to play outside.

C.They hated their mothers working outside.

D.They knew little about the education system.

2What did children do while “Music and Movement” was broadcasting?

    A.They attended the lectures.

    B.They did physical exercises.

    C.They sang traditional folk songs.

D.They played games with their parents.

3What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Tools teachers used in class in the 1960s.

B.The teaching way in the school in the 1960s.

C.Things children brought to school in the 1960s.

D.The number of children and teachers in the 1960s.

4In which kind of magazine can you read the text?

    A.Fashion. B.Science.

    C.Education. D.Travel.

  • 22、It was June a few years ago right around the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.   A few weeks earlier the first fireflies had appeared blinking (眨眼) their lights on and off in the woods around my house. What a joy it was seeing them again. Their little flickers (闪耀) of light made me smile with delight.

Now as the daylight was starting to fade I saw out my window some of the neighborhood children attempting to catch the slow moving lightening bugs. One of the girls went inside and came back with a clear, glass jar. After chasing a few without success she finally caught a firefly inside it. All the other children gathered around to watch it flickering its light on and off inside the jar. Soon darkness started to fall and the children’s Mom walked over to them and told them it was time to set the firefly free. One of the girls protested but the Mom explained that the firefly would die if left in the jar. Then she said something that still stays in my heart to this day: “It is time to let this little guy go so he can share his light with the rest of the world!”

I remember when I was a little boy we all used to sing the song, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!” But as adults we find it hard to do so. We dwell on (老是想着) the darkness too much and in fear keep our light hidden away. Don’t hide your light. Don’t keep it in a jar. Share your flickers, no matter how small they may be. Let the love inside you out. Let the glow within you drive the darkness away.

  • 23、   Air pollution is the world's top killer, a new global air quality index revealed last year. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), 4. 2 million people die each year from outdoor air pollution, and 91 percent of the world's population lives in a place that exceeds the WHO's guideline limits. With that in mind, Imperial College London has teamed up with biochemical tech startup Arborea to test out its biosolar leaf technology, while also demonstrating how sustainable solutions can address the vital environmental and social issues of today in real-world conditions.

So, what is a biosolar leaf and how does it work? The secret is algae(海藻). Arborea researchers developed a cultivation(培养)system that allows microscopic plants like microalgae to grow on large solar panel-like structures that can be installed on land, buildings, and anywhere with a roof in a built-up city to improve the surrounding air quality. Inspired by the natural process of photosynthesis(光合作用)the biosolar panels allow the microorganisms to absorb CO2 from the surrounding area and generate breathable oxygen back out again. And they help produce a nutritious, sustainable plant protein with tiny environmental impact—— Arborea's other focus——at the same time. "When I founded Arborea? my goal was to cope with climate change while addressing the critical issues related to the food system," Arborea founder and CEO Julian Melchiorri said. "This pilot plant will produce sustainable healthy food additives while purifying the air, producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment.”

Melchiorri has already had some success with his astonishing project, the world's first living bionic chandelier(仿生吊灯)which uses the same technology. The light of the chandelier stimulates photosynthesis of the microorganisms on the leaf-shaped modules, absorbing the CO2 inside and releasing oxygen back into the room. The chandelier currently holds pride of place in London's Victoria and Albert Museum's permanent collection.

1Why did the Imperial College London cooperate with Arborea?

A.To study the reason for air pollution in London.

B.To search for the new sustainable energy.

C.To trial the new technology of Arborea.

    D.To settle the social issues.

2What can be learned about the biosolar leaf?

A.It functions just like solar panels.

B.It imitates the natural process of photosynthesis.

C.It is aimed at producing sustainable healthy food.

D.It has been applied in large amounts in our daily life.

3What is the best title for the text?

    A.London's pride—the chandelier

B.The secret of algae found recently

C.An astonishing project benefiting Londoners a lot

D.World's first biosolar leaf to take on air pollution

4Which column of a web page is the text probably taken from?

C.Science and technology. D.Bionic design and modern life

  • 24、   Eating out is such a pleasure—the food, the wine, the joy of having it all brought to you by someone else that it’s a pity to ruin the experience by sharing it with other people.

Well, I do like visiting restaurants with friends. But dining out alone has its own very special attractions. For a start you can give all your attention to the food. There’s nothing worse than having to invent and deliver an opinion on school league tables or Sanchez’s move to Manchester United, plus listen to everyone else’s opinions, when all you really want to do is enjoy each mouthful along the way.

A second great thing about eating out alone is the chance to combine food with one of life’s other true pleasures: reading. You have to plan this carefully: Indian or Chinese restaurants are the best—you need food you can eat with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold your reading material.

But perhaps the biggest attraction of a table for one is the chance it gives to people—watching. Restaurants and the different reasons for visiting them—the first date, business meeting or night out with friends—produce human behaviour of surprising richness and variety. Will the man selling his business idea get any joy out of his possible investor(投资者)? Will the married couple think of anything to say to each other before their main courses arrive?

This “human zoo” part of eating out alone is one of the reasons I’d hate to be famous: everyone would be watching you, so you wouldn’t be able to watch them. The snooker player Steve Davis says that this was one of the strangest consequences(后果) of becoming well-known: he got very worried about his eating in public, almost to the level of doubting whether he was doing it right.

So next time you’re considering your eating out choices, remember the advice of the businessman Nubar Gulbenkian: “The best number for a dinner party is two-myself and a super headwaiter.”

【1】What is an advantage of dining out alone?

A.One can enjoy reading while eating.

B.One can be watched by other diners.

C.One can talk with waiter or waitress.

D.One can choose the food and the wine.

    【2】What worries Steve Davis?

A.Eating out can’t bring any joy to him.

B.Famous people can’t go to his favorite restaurants.

C.He must invent and deliver everyone else’s opinions.

D.Whether his table manners are right when he was watched by others.

【3】What is the author’s attitude towards eating out alone?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Disapproving

    C.Negative.

    D.Unconcerned.

【4】How is the passage mainly developed?

    A.By inferring.

    B.By comparing.

    C.By analyzing reasons.

    D.By listing suggestions.
