  • 21、A NASA spacecraft that will deliberately crash into an asteroid (小行星) is preparing to launch this week. The DART mission, or the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will lift off at 10:20 p. m. PT on November 23, 2021 aboard a Space X Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. Live coverage of the event will air on NASA TV and the agency’s site. But the true test for this asteroid deflection (偏转) technology will come in September 2022, when the spacecraft reaches its destination, to see how it affects the motion of a near-Earth asteroid in space.

The mission target is Dimorphos, a small moon orbiting the near-Earth asteroid Didymos. This will be the agency’s first full-scale demonstration of this type of technology on behalf of planetary defense. It also will be the first time that humans have changed the motion of a solar system body in a measurable way, according to the European Space Agency.

It’s the perfect time for the DART mission to occur. Didymos and Dimorphos will be relatively close to Earth—within 11 million kilometers—in September 2022. The spacecraft will come speeding in at about 24,140 kilometers per hour, targeting Dimorphos, said Nancy Chabot, DART coordination leader at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland.

The mission’s aim is to deliberately crash into Dimorphos to change the asteroid’s motion in space, according to NASA. This collision will be recorded by CubeSat, a companion cube satellite provided by the Italian Space Agency. It’s the Italian Space Agency’s first deep space mission.

The briefcase-size CubeSat will travel on DART and then be moved from it before impact (撞击) so it can record what happens. Three minutes after the impact, the CubeSat will fly by Dimorphos to capture images and video. The video of the impact will be streamed back to Earth, which should be “pretty exciting,” said Elena Adams, DART mission systems engineer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.

【1】Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.The Italian Space Agency has launched deep space missions before.

B.The spacecraft will reach its destination in September 2022.

C.Humans changed the motion of a solar system body in the past.

D.Didymos and Dimorphos are 11 million kilometers away from Earth now.

【2】Why will the spacecraft deliberately crash into an asteroid?

    A.To destroy Dimorphos completely.

    B.To be recorded by CubeSat.

C.To change the asteroid’s motion in space.

    D.To show the technology.

【3】What’s Elena Adams’ attitude to the coming video of the impact?

    A.Positive.

    B.Skeptical.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Unclear.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.NASA’s DART mission is set to launch.

B.A spacecraft will deliberately crash into the Moon.

C.NASA will show off its technology of defending the Earth.

D.A Space X Falcon 9 rocket will be launched this week.

  • 22、   Promise Sawyers, a 10-year-old girl in Nashville, Tenn., is inspiring people old and young after making a video before going to school “bigger and better” with her natural hair, just one day after she was made fun of for her afro.

Promise Sawyers’ motivational video was posted online by her mom Qui Daugherty, after the 5th-grader secretly recorded it on Daugherty’s phone. In it, Sawyers explained that she was feeling “some type of way” after her classmates had mean things to say after she wore her natural hair the day before. But she was determined not to let it bring her down, and wore it the same way the following day. “Don’t allow anyone to steal your joy,” Promise said. “Don’t give them that much power.”

Daugherty says that Promise has been surrounded by that type of positivity her whole life. She’s always taught her daughter to “meet a negative with a positive”, even when somebody is trying to bring her down. And although this example seems like one of the more disheartening( 令人气馁的) ones that Promise has faced after starting at a new school, her video proved that she took her mom’s advice to heart.

Now, nearly 2 million views later, people everywhere are responding to the video. “We had no idea the impact that it was going to make and the amount of messages,” Daugherty said. “It’s made a huge impact behind the scenes that has blessed me personally.”

Daugherty jokes that Promise doesn’t understand how influential her words are. Instead, the 10-year-old is just excited about the millions of views.

“I just tell her not to focus on the numbers,” Daugherty says. “Let’s find a way we can be impactful behind this and make an influence and inspire people. That’s all we want.”

1What does the underlined word “afro” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.A hairstyle.

    B.A disability.

    C.An attitude.

    D.A video.

2What did Promise decide to do after being teased by her classmates?

A.Seek some advice from her mother.

B.Make herself look bigger and better.

C.Record her sadness on video silently.

D.Keep wearing the same hair to school.

3What will Daugherty advise Promise to do when there’s something disheartening?

    A.Switch to a new start.

    B.Look on the bright side.

    C.Make necessary changes.

    D.Share her joy with others.

4How did Daugherty feel about people’s response to the video?

    A.Embarrassed. B.Worried.

    C.Confused. D.Surprised.

  • 23、Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language.Mr.Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.

    Download a Language Translation App

Mr.Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them.Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you’re not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.

Speak with Your Hands and Head

Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr.Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you’re in.“Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.

Knowing basic words and phrases like "hello""thank you” and “I’m sorry,I don’t speak your language.Do you speak English?” is a must, Mr.Thibault said.Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don’t know more, is a form of respect and will make you go a long way to be liked by locals.

Work with a Local Travel Agent

If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you’re heading to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.

    Hire a Local Tour Guide

A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with.Whenever Mr.Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip.“I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,”he said.

【1】In what situation should a language translation app be applied while traveling abroad?

  • 24、   Plastic is the workhorse material of the modern economy (经济). Lightweight and durable, it’s been used to make a vast number of products since its introduction over 100 years ago.

However, a study carried out by the World Economic Forum, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and McKinsey Company showed the status of the breakdown in the global plastic system. A full 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans.

The Ocean Cleanup, a start-up founded in 2013, is the brainchild of Boyan Slat, who came up with the idea for the company when he was just 17 years old. Since then, it’s received more than $2 million in funding(基金). The company plans to use a large array (列阵) that will be fixed to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. This will have arms that spread out over 100 km, getting all of the plastic garbage pushed into its nets. This is then collected by a 10,000-metre-cube container that will be emptied monthly.

Most recently, the Ocean Cleanup launched a team of explorers aboard a specially refitted C-130 Hercules aircraft heavily loaded with specialized sensor equipment. It discovered that the problem was worse than expected with an abundance of plastics measuring up to 1.5 m across and at a higher density than previously thought. The organization will continue to pilot the array and will start cleaning the pile before the end of the decade.

Once the plastic is out, what should we do with it? The foundation (基金会) hopes that the plastic from the ocean will have a commercial value which can help to fund the project. Ocean plastic is not easy to use, it’s mixed by nature consisting of everything from intact PET bottles to micro plastics. However, some of the world's biggest companies also see the chance to market oceans plastic products.

Transforming today’s plastics economy from its present form (take-make-waste) to a zero waste circular economy (take-make-take-make) is a difficult challenge. However, with cooperative action from producers, recyclers, governments and consumers alike and continuing innovation (革新) it can be done.

    1What’s Boyan Slat’s idea about?

A.A way to collect ocean plastic waste.

B.A new product made of ocean plastic.

C.A machine to recycle plastic garbage.

D.An organization to research into plastic.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “density” in Paragraph 4?

    A.Flexibility. B.Thickness.

    C.Width. D.Strength.

3What do some biggest companies expect of the ocean plastic?

A.It’ll be turned into treasure. B.It’ll sponsor the foundation.

C.It’ll cooperate with the government. D.It’ll take the form of take-make-waste.

4Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary. B.A guidebook.

    C.A novel. D.A magazine
