二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sometimes divorce, single parents and tragedy can make us feel like the family units that many of us came from are a thing of the past overnight. 【1】 They link our past general-lions with the bright hopes of our future.

Almost every family tradition has its roots in necessity. Over time, that necessity be-comes a feeling of sadness mixed with pleasure and affection when you think of happy times in the past, and eventually it just becomes another way for families to connect with one another. 【2】 , those traditions once again become necessities as they assume new meaning in the context of our need to communicate and understand our loved ones.

【3】 For example, it occurs lightly, weekly or on holidays. While your concept of family dinner may descend from a prior generation, it's those same traditions that we choose to preserve that keep us from sitting at the table.

The reason behind the usual traditional holidays, in fact, is about establishing a healthy and meaningful purpose for coming together. 【4】 and even for the unreligious family, they provide the simple pleasure of knowing that you'll see your loved ones at least that often. For religious families, the winter holidays still provide a healthy reminder to let the world go on spinning while we connect with our families and engage in our heritage together.

【5】 : not the holiday itself, but the reason it gives us to strengthen our faith—not just in our beliefs or our cultural duties, but our faith in our families and the love we share, too.

    A.In fact, as families change

B.When you are not homesick anymore

C.The winter holidays only come once a year

D.For many families, finding a balance of traditions is tough

E.Our family traditions seem like the only things keeping us together

F.Many traditions make a lot more sense if you look at them that way

G.Family dinner carries small but significant associations and kindnesses

  • 22、   Renewable energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind and solar farms, have so far been subsidized (资助) by government support schemes. This has led to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

However, the most recently approved offshore wind projects will most likely operate with ‘negative subsidies’ — paying money back to the government. The money will go towards reducing household energy bills as the offshore wind farms start producing power in the mid-2020s.

This is the conclusion of an analysis by an international team led by Imperial College London researchers published today in Nature Energy.

Lead researcher Dr Malte Jansen, from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial, said: “Offshore wind power will soon be so cheap to produce that it will undercut fossil-fueled power stations and may be the cheapest form of energy for the UK. Energy subsidies used to push up energy bills, but within a few years cheap renewable energy will see them brought down for the first time. This is an astonishing development.”

The analysis for five countries in Europe, including the UK, focused on a series of government auctions (拍卖) for offshore wind farms between February 2015 and September 2019. Companies that want to build wind farms bid in the auctions by stating the price at which they will sell the energy they produce to the government.

These are known as ‘contracts for difference’ or CfDs. If a company’s bid is higher than the wholesale electricity price on the UK market once the wind farm is up and running, then the company will receive a subsidy from the government to top up the price.

However, if the stated price (规定价格) is less than the wholesale price, then the company will pay the government back the difference. This payback is then passed through to consumer’s energy bills, reducing the amount that homes and businesses will pay for electricity.

The winning companies said they could build new offshore wind farms for around £40 per megawatt hour (MWh) of power. This was a new record set by these wind farms with bids 30 percent lower than just two years earlier.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Offshore wind farms to be built in the UK could reduce household energy bills by producing electricity very cheaply.

B.Offshore wind farms will not be subsidized by government in the near future.

    C.The importance of CfDs.

    D.The operation of negative subsidies.

【2】According to Paragraph 2, offshore wind farms ________.

A.will stop producing power in the mid-2020s

B.are paying money back to the government

C.will help reduce household energy bills

D.will all operate with ‘negative subsidies’

【3】The underlined words “top up” in Paragraph 6 probably mean ________.

    A.make up

    B.take up

    C.cover

    D.fill up

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The renewable energy projects will lead to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

B.The company whose bid is less than the wholesale electricity price will receive a subsidy.

C.The stated electricity price is now higher than the wholesale electricity price.

D.Fossil-fueled power will be soon produced cheaply.

  • 23、In English it’s common to say, “I know this town like the back of my hand!” While we may know our towns really well, how well do we actually know our hands? Maybe not quite as well as we think, said a scientific study.

Matthew Longo and his team from University College London studied the left hands of 100 people. With their hands placed palms down under a board, Longo’s team gave the instruction to point to their knuckles (关节) and fingertips with a marker. How did they do? Not that well.

“People think their hand is wider than it actually is,” said Longo. He said they also seemed to think their fingers were shorter than their true lengths. People were most accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up to their pinkies (小指).

“It is connected to our sense of position,” explained Longo. Humans know where different parts of our bodies are, even if we can’t see them. “It tells us whether a joint is straight or not,” said Longo. “We also need to know the distances between our joints,” he went on. Our brains know the sizes and shapes of our bodies from the maps they make for themselves. “This experiment tried to find those maps,” he said.

Maybe maps don’t need to be perfect. But why aren’t our brains more accurate? Longo said our brains “see” areas based on our sense of touch, with the stronger the sense of touch in a specific body part, the bigger that body part seems. An example is our lips. As they have more nerves than our noses, our brain’s map shows our lips are bigger. The same thing can happen with body parts that have a lot of nerves. If you’ve ever had something stuck in your teeth, it probably felt huge! That’s because our tongues also have lots of nerves.

If you want to have some fun, try this test with your classmates. Get some boards and some markers and have them mark the spots where they think their knuckles and fingertips are. Compare their hands to the marker spots and see how well they have performed.

【1】What’s the meaning of the common saying?

    A.People know hands well.

    B.People know the town well.

C.People know the hand back little.

    D.People know their home well.

【2】What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?

    A.To tell readers hands’ backs.

B.To show the topic of the passage.

    C.To indicate a common sense.

D.To compare the hand to town .

【3】How do humans know where different parts of bodies are?

    A.By our sense of position.

B.By knowing the sizes and shapes.

    C.By making body maps.

    D.By touching the joints.

【4】What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

    A.To make suggestions for readers.

B.To advise readers to get some markers.

C.To ask readers to draw their hands.

    D.To suggest observing hands carefully.

  • 24、It was June a few years ago right around the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.   A few weeks earlier the first fireflies had appeared blinking (眨眼) their lights on and off in the woods around my house. What a joy it was seeing them again. Their little flickers (闪耀) of light made me smile with delight.

Now as the daylight was starting to fade I saw out my window some of the neighborhood children attempting to catch the slow moving lightening bugs. One of the girls went inside and came back with a clear, glass jar. After chasing a few without success she finally caught a firefly inside it. All the other children gathered around to watch it flickering its light on and off inside the jar. Soon darkness started to fall and the children’s Mom walked over to them and told them it was time to set the firefly free. One of the girls protested but the Mom explained that the firefly would die if left in the jar. Then she said something that still stays in my heart to this day: “It is time to let this little guy go so he can share his light with the rest of the world!”

I remember when I was a little boy we all used to sing the song, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!” But as adults we find it hard to do so. We dwell on (老是想着) the darkness too much and in fear keep our light hidden away. Don’t hide your light. Don’t keep it in a jar. Share your flickers, no matter how small they may be. Let the love inside you out. Let the glow within you drive the darkness away.

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

It was dark outside, just after the dinner hour, when Benny Correa and Amanda Disley and their three kids climbed into their black Cadillac Escalade. As they prepared to leave the parking lot of the restaurant where they’d just eaten, a dark blue Honda Civic crossed their path.

“Look,” Correa shouted, “that’s that car! That’s that car!”

Earlier in the day, Disley had mentioned an Amber (安珀紧急通告) issued for a missing 11-year-old girl named Moccia. The car that passed them was the same make and model as the one that had been used in the kidnapping (绑架).

Correa followed the Honda in an effort to see the license plate (车牌). The driver immediately sped up and blew through a stop sign. Correa shocked his family by following suit. He wasn’t about to lose the Honda. “Being a father, I had to do what I had to do,” he told ABC News.

The Honda pulled around the back of a fruit store. “They’re trying to get out of me,” Correa yelled. When the Honda came around to the front, Correa caught up and pulled ahead, trying to cut it off. The Honda hit the brakes (刹车). The Cadillac’s high beams of light flashed on the driver — a young man with black hair, pulling a sweatshirt up over his face. They could see him forcing a girl’s head down in the back, as if trying to hide her.

Disley, who by then had called 911, was conveying their situation to the dispatcher (调度员). “It’s him!” she yelled into the phone. “The kidnapper!”

Confused, the dispatcher asked, “The blue Honda?”

    “Yes, it’s him!”

Correa stayed close behind the Honda. They were now racing down the road at 100mph. “He’s going through red lights!” Disley yelled to the dispatcher.

Correa hit the brakes to avoid an oncoming car and then hit the gas to catch up. “Get him, Dad!” his son shouted excitedly from the back. Keeping on the Honda’s tail, Correa discovered another problem: The low-gas light was flashing. Their car soon stopped. The Honda disappeared.

    Paragraph 1:

But thanks to Disley’s directions, the police had confirmed the path the kidnapper was taking.

    Paragraph 2:

To people’s relief, Moccia was saved eventually.
