  • 21、   If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do not exercise at all.

Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries (动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.

Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”

The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and long distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn't actually do too much.”

1The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “________”

    A.hard B.regular C.practical D.flexible

2What’s the author’s purpose by presenting some figures in Paragraph 2?

    A.To suggest giving up jogging

B.To show risks of doing sports

    C.To provide supportive evidence

    D.To introduce the research process

3What can be inferred from the text?

    A.Jogging is the best exercise.

B.More exercise means a healthier life.

C.Marathons runners are least likely to die.

D.Proper exercise contributes to good health.

  • 22、When Thomas Edison hit a wall with his inventions, he would nap in an armchair while holding a steel ball. As he started to fall asleep and his muscles relaxed, the ball would strike the floor, waking him with insights into his problems. Or so the story goes.

Thomas Edison was somewhat right. Now, more than 100 years later, scientists have repeated the trick in a lab, revealing that the famous inventor was on to something. People following his recipe tripled their chances of solving a math problem. The trick was to wake up in the transition between sleep and wakefulness, just before deep sleep. In this transitional period, we are not quite awake, but also not deeply asleep. It can be as short as a minute and occurs right when we start to doze off.

Researchers recruited more than 100 easy sleepers, each of whom was given a math test with a hidden rule for the answer. By recording brain activity, they found that those who napped and were interrupted during the first phase of sleep were three times better at finding the hidden key to the problem than those who remained awake.

The creative effect happened even for people who spent just 15 seconds in the first sleep stage. But the trick didn’t work for those who reached later stages of sleep. “Our findings suggest there is a creative sweet spot during sleep onset,” says author Delphine Oudiette, a sleep researcher at the Paris Brain Institute. “It is a small window which can disappear if you wake up too early or sleep too deep.”

The study team also identified a brain activity pattern linked to the creativity-boosting phase: moderate levels of brain waves at a slow frequency known as alpha, associated with relaxation, and low levels of delta waves, a hallmark of deep sleep. Oudiette says researchers can now focus on this brain signature when investigating the neural mechanisms (神经机制) of creative problem-solving. The team has already planned an experiment to help people reach a creative zone by monitoring their brain waves in real time.“ Edison was great”, Oudiette says, “and now we have a lot more to explore.”

【1】What does the underlined phrase “was on to something” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Discovered the truth.

    B.Was absorbed in math puzzles.

    C.Started the experiment.

    D.Was engaged in laboratory work.

    A.gaining adequate deep sleep

B.discovering the hidden rules of problems

    C.following Edison’s life style

D.waking up right after nodding off to sleep

【3】Why did the researchers record brain activity of the sleepers?

    A.To evaluate their sleep efficiency.

B.To measure their amount of sleep.

C.To assess their levels of intelligence.

D.To compare their creative thinking abilities.

【4】What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

A.Supporting evidence for the research results.

B.Potential application of the research findings

C.A further explanation of the research methods.

D.A reasonable doubt about the research process.

  • 23、   In 1931, Francis Chichester tried to fly round the world but failed. Then he gave up flying and began sailing. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo(单人的)transatlantic sailing race.

After that, his old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan, In August, 1966, at the age of nearly sixty-five, he began the greatest voyage of his life. Soon, he was away in his new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.

After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to discourage him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part. On 30 January, he experienced the blackest night he had ever known. The sea became so rough that the boat almost turned over. Food, clothes, and broken glass were all mixed together. Fortunately, the damage to the boat was not too serious, Chichester calmly got bed and went to sleep. When he woke up, the sea had become calm again.

Just before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May, 1967, he arrived back in England, where more than 250,000 people were waiting to welcome him. He was knighted(授爵)by Queen Elizabeth II. The whole voyage had taken him nine months, of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to achieve.

Like many other adventurers, Chichester had experienced fear and conquered(克服)it. In doing so, he had undoubtedly learnt something about himself. Moreover, in the modern age when human beings depend so much on machines, he had given men throughout the world new pride.

1What do we know about Chichester?

A.He sailed a across the Atlantic alone in 1958.

B.He sailed round the world to fight against cancer.

C.He was not defeated by the violent night of 30 January.

D.He had been sailing nonstop for 365 days in the Pacific Ocean.

2What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.The great meaning of Chichester's adventure.

B.The lesson Chichester learned from the joumey.

C.The contributions machines made to the modern age.

D.The fears Chichester experienced in the adventure.

3Which of the following can best describe Chichester?

A.Adventurous and determined. B.Independent and generous.

C.Energetic and gentle. D.Enthusiastic and kind.

  • 24、Encouraging children to think about the feelings of others improves their creativity, new research suggests.

The findings are from a year-long study with Design and Technology (D&T) year 9 students (aged 13 to 14) at two London schools. Students at one school spent the year following course-required lessons, while the other group’s D&T lessons used some thinking tools which are aimed at developing students’ ability to have empathy, while solving real-world problems.

Both groups of students were judged for creativity at both the start and end of the school year using a perfect test.

The results showed a significant increase in creativity among students who use the thinking tools. At the start of the year, the creativity scores of the students who followed the required curriculum, were 11% higher than those following D&T lessons. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: creativity scores among the D&T group were 78% higher than the required-course group.

The researchers also examined specific types within the test: such as “emotional expressiveness” and “open-mindedness”. Students from the D&T group again scored much higher in these types, showing that obvious progress in empathy was improving the overall creativity scores.

Nicholl, Senior Lecturer in D&T Education, said: “When I taught Design and Technology, I didn’t see children as someone who would one day do good to society; they were people who needed to be ready to go into the world at 18. Teaching children to understand another person’s feelings and experiences is about building a society where we appreciate each other’s point of view. Surely that is something we want education to do.”

【1】What’s the purpose of adopting the thinking tools?

A.To understand the feelings of others.

    B.To develop students’ creativity.

    C.To design new technologies.

    D.To deal with realistic problems.

【2】Which of the following is true about the study?

A.Both the groups took courses required by the curriculum.

B.The two groups of students were tested twice during the one-year study.

C.Students from the required course scored much higher in these specific types.

D.Creativity among the students from the D&T lessons has been slightly improved.

【3】What can be inferred from Nicholl’s words?

A.He is indifferent to whether the children benefit society.

B.The D&T lessons can be an effective way to improve grades.

C.Education is expected to build a society with different opinions appreciated.

D.The D&T lessons surely need to be taken before the children go into the world.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Emotional Education Matters

    B.Teaching Students to Be Better

    C.Creativity Offers Great Chances

    D.Empathy Significantly Improves Creativity
