二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Once upon a time, a man was walking on a mountain when he found an incredible cave with all kinds of treasure inside it. So he gave up his job, his home, and his friends, and spent all his time guarding the cave.

He was so devoted to it that he hardly ate or drank, and before long he fell ill. One day, when he could hardly move at all, he decided to share the treasure.

He crawled (爬) into the cave to get a handful of jewels, but discovered, to his horror, that it was empty except for a small emerald (绿宝石). The man took it and gave it to the first person to come by, a woman.

Then an old man came by. “What bad luck!” the man said. “Just a moment ago I gave a woman the last of the treasure I was guarding.”

“Are you sure there is nothing left?” the old man asked.

The man took him into the cave, where they found a box with jewels and some bags of gold. The man was shocked, and the old man explained to him, “At last! At last someone has broken the spell (咒语) of this cave. This is the Cave of Treasure, and you’re the first to have passed its great test. Many have devoted their lives to this cave, only to end up realizing there was nothing here…”

“And why does this happen?” the man asked.

“This magic cave has only as many riches as your own heart. When someone discovers it, the cave fills with the treasure they bring with them, but later, when they have devoted themselves to guarding the treasure, their hearts become empty, as does the cave. The only way to fill it is by filling your heart with all that is good, as you did by giving the woman that last jewel.”

From that day on, the man understood that it was better to share than to keep. Thanks to the cave and the old man, he became noble and generous.

【1】Why did the man give up his job, home and friends?

A.Because he possessed a variety of treasure.

B.Because he devoted himself to a great test.

C.Because he had to guard the treasure cave.

D.Because he wanted to find the treasure cave.

【2】What did the man find when he showed the cave to the old man?

    A.All kinds of treasure.

B.A box with jewels and gold.

    C.A small emerald.

    D.A handful of beautiful jewels.

【3】What do we learn about the people who devoted their lives to the cave before?

A.They all found the cave empty at last.

B.The old man freed them from its spell.

C.They all filled the cave with the treasure they had.

D.They thought it was better to share.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

    A.Different people have different views.

B.Treasure only belongs to those who possess it.

C.Some people never learn what is really valuable.

D.The quality of giving is real treasure.

  • 22、   An interactive map was published by the tourism website Smoky Mountains. It is intended for fall foliage (枝叶) fans. It will help them make the most of the colorful season.

The map draws on various data. It includes rainfall and temperature forecasts. It includes average daylight exposure. It predicts the timing of leaves’ color change across the United States.

Users can view weekly forecasts. They select date, which are listed below the map. Shades of green overtake the map when users click September 7. Shades of orange, red and brown appear by October 19. They indicate the arrival of near peak or peak foliage in the northern and western US. By November 30 all but the southernmost parts of the US are past peak point.

“The predictive fall leaf map helps potential travelers determine the precise future date when the leaves will peak in each area of the United States,” said Wes Melton. He is one of the data scientists who created the tool. “We believe this will enable travelers to take more meaningful fall vacations, capture beautiful fall photos and enjoy the natural beauty of autumn.”

The researchers refine the tool every year. This is the sixth version of the map with more and better functions. It builds on sources such as historical and forecasted temperatures. It looks at leaf peak trends and peak observation trends. These help produce the final product.

Chlorophyll is the chemical responsible for turning leaves green. Plants stop producing it when fall approaches and the days get shorter. This process exposes pigments (色素), which creates the beautiful colors associated with fall foliage.

Early October will likely mark the start of this year’s leaf-watching season thanks to the warm weather. Tourists seeking red and golden leaves should pack their bags soon and prepare to enjoy the view.

1What do we know about the interactive map?

A.It shows how much rain falls in each area of the US.

B.It predicts when leaves become colorful across the US.

C.It forecasts what the weather is like in each area of the US.

D.It indicates how much sunlight each area of the US receives.

2Who may the interactive map appeal to most?

    A.Musicians. B.Physicians. C.Engineers. D.Photographers.

3What does the underlined word “refine” in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Improve. B.Invent. C.Employ. D.Study.

4What contributes to the change of leaves’ colors in fall?

    A.Poor nutrition. B.Dry weather. C.Pigments. D.Chlorophyll.

  • 23、Elyse Fox said no one in her family spoke about mental health while she was growing up. As a result, Elyse, 27, said she didn’t really know how to talk about what she was feeling. But now, Elyse understands that her depression(抑郁) is not something to be embarrassed about – it’s just a small part of her overall health that she has to take care of. In order to spread that message, Elyse started @sadgirlsclubpbg, a real-life club that gathers girls together to let them know that if they’re struggling with their mental health, they aren’t alone. That way, Elyse said, girls who understand that others are going through can start to break down the stigma(耻辱) surrounding mental health, showing that  it’s nothing to be ashamed of. At the same time, they’re supporting one another and sharing resources. While the group meets in person, Elyse keeps the community going on Instagram, a social media platform. We talked to Elyse about how social media can create a supportive community for people with mental illness.

Teen vogue: Why did you start Sad Girls Club?

Elyse Fox: I started it in February of this year … after I put out a film about my mental illnesses in December. I removed my mask and said, ‘Hey, I’m not as happy as I seem, I’m depressed and here’s my story.’ That’s when I received a wave of girls saying, ‘I feel the same way.’ So I wanted to  create something for girls to connect in real life and in person to get rid of the stigma around mental illness.

TV: Why is it important to talk about mental health?

EF: Because the conversation needed to happen and it needed to happen now. Because one in five Americans is going through some type of mental illness. If you aren’t personally, you know someone who is. It’s out of people’s control.

TV: Do you think social media help with mental illness?

EF: Absolutely. I think with social media it’s so easy to be honest. You being your true self and removing a mask and being honest with yourself and followers is the best way to heal(治愈). People are connected with realness. You can reach so many people from different countries, different ages.

TV: What do you want young women of color to know about mental health?

EF: I want everyone to know about mental health, that it isn’t something that is visible. It doesn’t have a face, no age range. It’s something we can cope with - and it’s best to do it together rather than alone.

TV: Anything you’d like to add?

EF: I’d add that anyone would encourage women or anyone going through anything to find a friend or to speak out and seek help. Even if it’s a simple conversation with a teacher. As a person who kept everything inside for over 20 years, it’s extremely helpful.

1What can we infer from the first paragraph?

    A. Elyse’s family members don’t care about her mental problems.

    B. Elyse didn’t realize mental problems are something common until she grew up.

    C. Elyse started the Sad Girls Club to offer some resources she had to the members.

    D. The Sad Girls Club have organized online activities for girls with mental problems.

2What is the main reason for many girls sending messages to Elyse after watching her film?

    A. To get in touch with her in real life.

    B. To ask her to start a club for girls like them.

    C. To give her some advice to solve the problem.

    D. To tell her that they share the same problem with her.

3Which of the following about Sad Girls Club is TRUE?

    A. Members of Sad Girls Club are young women of color who have mental problems.

    B. Members of Sad Girls Club keep in touch with each other by sharing their life online.

    C. The Club’s aim is to tell women they don’t need to be embarrassed about their problems.

    D. The founder of the club believes it will be very helpful to keep everything inside.

  • 24、December has already arrived, and here is a list of films recommended by Nicholas Barber, from BBC News.

    Don’t Look Up

People are often slow to react to a disaster, whether it’s a climate emergency or a global pandemic—and it was this tendency that prompted Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice) to make his new film, Don’t Look Up. Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio play two astronomers who have calculated that a “planet killer” comet is going to crash into the Earth, killing everyone. But the US president (Meryl Streep) is just one of the many people who refuse to face the facts. “It’s the idea of a disaster movie in which people don’t necessarily believe that the disaster is coming. I call it a dark comedy,” McKay told The New York Times.

    West Side Story

The original 1961 film of West Side Story, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, is honoured as one of the finest Hollywood musicals ever made. A New York-set movie version of Romeo and Juliet, it was the biggest box-office hit of the year, and went on to win 10 Oscars, including best picture. Why, then, should anyone watch a new take on the same material? Well, one answer is that this West Side Story is directed by Steven Spielberg. Another answer is that Stephen Sondheim has given it his approval. “It’s really terrific,” he said. “And for those of you who know the show, there are going to be some real surprises in it...”

    Flee

In this heart-breaking Danish documentary, Jonas Poher Rasmussen interviews his friend Amin about his miserable experiences as an Afghan refugee. Amin remembers his years as a child in Kabul(the capital of Afghan), his family’s flight from the Taliban, his deeply painful life in Moscow... It’s hard to imagine a more important film, but Flee doesn’t just do the vital job of humanising(使人性化) refugees, it also breaks new ground as a documentary.

Other recommended films include: The Matrix Resurrections, Being The Ricardos, Red Rocket, The Lost Daughter, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Nightmare Alley, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Just choose one or several to enjoy with your friends!

【1】What does the underlined part “this tendency” refer to?

    A.A global pandemic.

    B.A climate emergency.

    C.People’s slow reaction to disasters.

    D.Adam McKay’s new film.

【2】Which of the following films is Steven Spielberg in charge of?

    A.Don’t Look Up.

    B.Romeo and Juliet.

    C.West Side Story.

    D.Flee.

【3】What’s the film Flee based on?

    A.A true story.

    B.A dark comedy.

    C.A natural disaster.

    D.A Hollywood musical.
