21、What’s on Your Pet’s Mind? In 1977, Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it.Her first experiments began with Alex.Alex was a one year old African grey parrot and Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the English language.“I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.”
At the time, most scientists didn’t believe animals had any thoughts. They thought animals were more like robots but didn’t have the ability to think or feel.Of course, if you own a pet you probably disagree. But it is the job of a scientist to prove this and nowadays more scientists accept that animals can think for themselves.
“That’s why I started my studies with Alex,” Irene said, “Some people actually called me crazy for trying this.”
Nowadays, we have more and more evidence that animals have all sorts of mental abilities.Sheep can recognize faces.Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use a variety of tools and even use weapons to hunt. And Alex the parrot became a very good talker.
Thirty years after the Alex studies began.Irene was still giving him English lessons up until his recent death. For example, if Alex was hungry he could say “want grape”.Alex could count to six and was learning the sounds for seven and eight.“He has to hear the words over and over before he can correctly say them.” Irene said, after pronouncing “seven” for Alex a few times in a row.Alex could also tell the difference between colors, shapes, sizes, and materials (e.g.wood and metal). Before he finally died, Alex managed to say “seven”.
Another famous pet that proved some animals have greater mental skills was a dog called Rico.He appeared on a German TV game show in 2011.Rico knew the names of 200 different toys and easily learned the names of new ones. When Rico became famous, many other dog owners wanted to show how clever their pets were.Another dog called Betsy could understand 300 words.
One theory for dogs’ ability to learn a language is that they have ben close companions to humans for many centuries and so their ability to understand us is constantly evolving (进化).While animals can’t do what humans do yet, some scientists believe that examples like Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops intelligence, as well as physical appearance.

22、 Brazil, the largest country in South America, is famous for the Amazon rainforest and soccer. But on the hottest days, people travel there for another reason – the Carnival. Full of excitement and fun, the Carnival is held annually in February or March. This year, the celebration runs from March 2nd to 9th .
It is a wild festival of food, music and dance. The word “Carnival” comes from the Portuguese “Carne Vale”, which means “farewell to meat”. In the early 1600s, the Portuguese brought European traditions to Brazil. Then they started their own carnival with dances and music, which were inspired by black people brought there by the slave trade.
With its beautiful floats (花车), attractive clothes and happy people, the Samba Parade is the most fantastic event of the Carnival. The Sambadrome is a special stadium for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro with 80,000 seats where people can sit and enjoy the festival. Samba is said to be the soul of Rio. “This is where the passion for samba lies – the atmosphere is electric as even the oldest men and women sing and dance to the music,” travel guidebook Lonely Planet noted.
Top samba schools stand out in the main parade, with fantastic parades of floats and thousands of dancers. The parade goes on until dawn. The schools base their performances on certain themes from Brazilian history or on social and environmental problems, such as that of the Amazon rainforest.
Besides fun street parties, colorful costumes and energetic music, Carnival also offers plenty of tasty street food, such as Quindim – a dessert made of egg yolks and sugar.
Overall, it is traditionally a time to go a bit crazy with eating, dancing and dressing up.

23、Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

24、 A father has been given a very unusual birthday gift from his two sons. Since Chris and Mike both live in Florida, they felt upset that they could not be with their father in Linwood, New Jersey for his special day.
As kids, they would always celebrate their father's birthday by going out to dinner and "play a trick" on him. Because they could not continue their mischievous (恶作剧的) tradition, they decided to seek some outside help.
Their father, Christopher Ferry, totally didn't know their plan until last week when he woke up to a text message from a number he did not recognize. The first text said, "Happy Birthday." And then another one said, "I read it on a billboard (广告牌)."
Sure enough, Chris and Mike had taken out an entire billboard reading "Wish My Dad a Happy Birthday—Love, Your Sons." The billboard also featured Christopher's name, face and phone number. Originally, they only expected their father to receive birthday wishes from friends and family members who recognized his face, but with the billboard hanging above the Black Horse Turnpike in Atlantic City, his phone quickly became flooded with messages and voicemail from total strangers wishing him a happy birthday. The billboard has made Ferry something of a local celebrity, too. Ferry said, "The waitress recognized me and she said, 'Oh, you're the billboard dad.' And that's my new title. I'm the billboard dad. I love it. It's really coo1."
Though a large number of wishes have made Christopher's phone temporarily unusable, he said that he was filled with joy and pride.
