二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、About 97% of the world's water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But,as we can't drink sea water, how can it be important?

Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae(海藻)drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important sea water is!

Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic(微小的) animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.

The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man,People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn't matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.

Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats (海域).Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered(提倡) to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important sea water is!

1Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain?

    A. small animals→algae→microscopic animals→large animals→man

    B. algae→microscopic animals→large animals→larger animals→man

    C. small animals→algae→large animals→microscopic animals→man

    D. microscopic animals→algae→large animals→larger animals→man

2People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea____.

    A. wouldn't harm the fish in the sea

    B. would change the balance of the food chain

    C. would be broken down in the sea

    D. wouldn't do much harm to the sea

    3From the passage,we learn that____.

    A. most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas

    B. it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain

    C. excessive fishing has caused the decrease in fish stocks

    D. it won't be long before the problems concerning oceans are solved

4Which of the following is NOT a way being used to protect the oceans?

    A. The use of international agreements.

    B. Forbidding fishing to protect fish stocks.

    C. The use of new techniques.

    D. Raising people's awareness of protecting the oceans.

  • 22、Chemically, there are many different alcohols. All of them are poisons for almost all living things. After a person swallows a drink containing alcohol, the alcohol is absorbed rapidly into the bloodstream. It is then slowly removed and burned up, changing entirely in the process to carbon dioxide and water, mostly by action of the liver. The effects of alcohol on the body come from its effect on the brain. And they depend upon the amount of alcohol that builds up in the bloodstream.

As with many other poisons, a small amount of alcohol has some special effects. In small amounts it acts as a stimulant. People who are “uptight” — tense and nervous — are apt to become more relaxed and talkative, and seem to lose their worries. For this reason, some people drink a little alcohol after a hard day’s work.

The trouble with alcohol begins with just a little more just — a slightly higher amount — in the bloodstream. Then it becomes a depressant. Depressants make people slower at thinking and slower at moving. But people are apt to think they are smarter and faster. That’s bad. You can easily understand why they should not be driving a car.

There’s another part about drinking too much alcohol, which is even worse. People are likely to lose self-control. Then they are likely to drink even more. Those who are drunk are not very nice to be around and can be dangerous— to themselves and others.

Some people are compulsive drinkers. Even a small amount of alcohol “sets them off,” and they keep on drinking. These people are called alcoholics. The American Medical Association says they have the disease of alcoholism.

So far, no one has found a cure. The only treatment for an alcoholic is to never take a drink of alcohol-not even a little bit. That may sound simple, but for an alcoholic it’s not.

【1】Which part of body does alcohol have the most effects on?

    A.The bloodstream.

    B.The heart.

    C.The brain.

    D.The liver.

【2】Why do people like to drink alcohol after a day’s work?

    A.To relax themselves.

    B.To make them smarter.

    C.To have a good sleep.

    D.To become braver.

【3】What does the author’s suggestion to alcoholics?

A.Drink n little bit each day.

    B.Cut down on the amount.

    C.Never drive after drinking.

    D.Stop drinking completely.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.The benefits of alcohol drinking.

B.The effects of alcohol on people

    C.The treatments on alcoholism.

    D.The causes of getting drunk.

  • 23、When you hear “I have a dream…”, one of the most famous speeches in human history, you’ll never have the idea how the audience on the scene were fueled by emotional intelligence. When Martin Luther King. Jr. presented his dream, he chose language that would stir the hearts of his audience. Delivering this electrifying(震撼性的) message required emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions.

Emotional intelligence has been highly recommended by leaders, policymakers, and educators as the solution to a wide range of social problems. Emotional intelligence is important, but the uncontrolled enthusiasm has obscured (掩盖)a dark side. New evidence shows that when people sharpen their emotional skills, they become better at controlling others. When you’re good at controlling your own emotions, you can hide your true feelings. When you know what others are feeling, you can motivate them to act against their own best interests.

Social scientists have begun to document this dark side of emotional intelligence. In a research led by University of Toronto professor Jochen Menges, when a leader gave an inspiring speech filled with emotion, the audience was less likely to scrutinize (细察) the message and remembered the content. Ironically(讽刺 的是), audience members were so moved by the speech that they claimed to recall more of it.

The authors call this the awestruck effect, but it might just as easily be described as the dumbstruck effect. One observer reflected that Hitler’s persuasive impact came from his ability to strategically express emotions—he would “tear open his heart”—and these emotions affected his followers to the point that they would “stop thinking critically and just emote.”

Leaders who master emotions can rob us of our abilities to reason. If their values are out of step with our own, the results can be destructive. New evidence suggests that when people have self-serving motives, emotional intelligence becomes a weapon for controlling others.

Throwing light on this dark side of emotional intelligence is one mission of a research team led by University College London professor Martin Kilduff. According to these experts, emotional intelligence helps people disguise (伪装) one set of emotions while expressing another for personal gain. Professor Kilduff’s team writes, “The strategic disguise of one’s own emotions and the controlling of others’ emotions for strategic ends are behaviors evident not only on Shakespeare’s stage but also in the offices and corridors where power and influence are traded.”

Of course, people aren’t always using emotional intelligence for   nefarious ends. More often than not, high EQ is helpful in most aspects of our life. Emotional intelligence—like any skill—can be used for good or evil. So whether it is a gift or a curse lies in your hand.

【1】Why does the author mention Martin Luther King, Jr?

A.To honor the great leader for his courage.

B.To recommend his speech to other leaders.

C.To introduce the major topic to readers.

D.To advocate a society with fewer problems.

【2】Which of the following belongs to a dark side of emotional intelligence?

A.Developing the capability to control one’s own emotion.

B.Influencing people to do what brings disadvantages to them.

C.Appealing to the audience to concentrate and remember more.

D.Encouraging the moved audience to learn more of the speech.

【3】What is the dumbstruck effect of Hitler’s emotional intelligence?

A.His followers would tear open their hearts to him.

B.His followers would express emotions strategically.

C.His followers would lose the ability to reason properly.

D.His followers would develop the self-serving motives.

【4】How do people use their emotional intelligence for personal gain?

A.They disguise their true emotions and show another one.

B.They help their colleagues to build up confidence.

C.They present their strategic behaviors on the stage.

D.They lower their own dignity to gain popularity.

【5】Which may mean the same as the underlined word in the last paragraph ?

    A.Immoral.

    B.Unimportant.

    C.Illegal.

    D.Uncontrollable.

    A.The benefits of emotional intelligence.

B.The advantages and disadvantages of emotions.

C.The reasons for using emotional skills.

D.The dark side of emotional intelligence.

  • 24、   We can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging.

His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.

Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called "shen".

According to Shen, it is the kidney (肾脏)which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper.

We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves.

So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young?

This is where Dr. Shen's herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.

1How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?

    A.By studying Western medicine.

    B.By learning traditional Chinese medicine.

C.By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.

D.By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.

2What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?

    A.Medical treatment. B.People's good kidney.

    C.Level of people's activity. D.Positive life attitude.

3The reason why people become old is that _____.

    A.they become weaker and weaker

B.their bodies are unable to fight diseases

C.they have reduced strength, loss of hair

    D.their bodies produce T-cells

4We can probably learn from the passage that _____.

A.eating more low calorie food can allow people to keep young

B.the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for health

C.people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the body

D.Dr. Shen's herbal medicine is very effective
