二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Like human beings, dogs may catch cold because of cold weather, wet conditions or can also get it from other sick dogs. If a dog has a running nose and watery eyes, coughs or sneezes(打喷嚏), then it is quite probable that the dog has caught cold.

A dog's cold can get over after a few days without treatment but it totally depends upon the owner to treat it with medications or improve its immune power(免疫力)to get rid of the cold naturally. Following are some of the things you can do if your dog gets a cold.

You can improve its immune power by giving it proper nutrient diet. Healthy food can really do wonders. Try to give it food which is either suggested by the vet(兽医)or is healthy for your pet. Increase the intake of food which is rich in vitamins A, C and E.

Keep your dog warm. The best place for your dog in winter is inside your house. Do not keep your dog outside when it is cold and wet. At home you can also keep the dog warm with the help of carpets. This will make him comfortable and help him to recover fast.

Increase the fluid(流质)intake as it helps a lot. Water can be the best choice but you can also add broth(肉汤)in water which will give your dog strength. Warm water will make your dog more comfortable and will also keep the dog away from the respiratory infections(呼吸道感染).

Steam treatment is considered to be effective in getting rid of cold. It makes the nasal(鼻的)passage wet, which helps proper breathing. Just fill your bathroom with steam and leave your dog inside the bathroom for 15 minutes. Do it nearly 2 to 3 times a day and you will see your dog recovering.

These are some of the things you can do to help your dog recover from cold. However, if you are not able to find any improvement in its health, then turn to the vet for help immediately. Take your dog for regular checkups so as to avoid complications(并发症).

【1】From the first paragraph we know about __________.

A.the difficulty in keeping a dog as a pet

    B.characteristics(特征) of sick dogs

C.the similarities between dogs and human beings

D.causes and symptoms(症状)of cold in dogs

【2】When your dog catches cold, you should feed it on _______.

A.its favorite food   B.the suggested food by the vet

C.some meat and water   D.food rich in vitamin B

【3】When a dog catches cold, it is wrong to ________.

A.keep it inside during cold and wet weather

B.leave it inside the bathroom full of steam

C.let it eat too much solid(固体)food

D.keep it sleeping on carpets at home

【4】It can be learnt from the text that _________.

A.a dog’s cold can always disappear naturally

B.it’s quite easy to make a sick dog recover from cold

    C.treating a dog’s cold sometimes needs a vet’s help

D.cold in dogs won’t spread between each other.

  • 22、   Ireland’s Achill Island has always been a popular European tourist destination. However, since last April, the small island of just 2,600 residents has gained worldwide fame thanks to the magical reappearance of a beach that was washed away over three decades ago.

The chain of events began in 1984 when residents of Dooagh, one of the five settlements on the island, awoke to a surprising sight: their beautiful sandy beach had been washed away by strong Atlantic storms. There were only rocks and rock pools left. For over 30 years, only small amounts of sand returned to the once unspoiled shores. The area’s tourism industry slowly declined, and the handful of beachside hotels, pubs, and restaurants gradually closed as well.

Then around Easter last year, something magical happened - an unusual ten-day tide blanketed the bare 300-meter long rock beach with hundreds of tons of soft golden sand. Scientists suspect that the sand had been gathering offshore for months and was transported to the beach by the high winds and powerful waves.

The locals are delighted to have their beach back, especially as it is attracting thousands of visitors wishing to witness the power of nature, with their own eyes. However, Sean Molloy, manager of Achill Tourism, cautions against going into the cold waters just yet, saying, “Because of the sand coming in, we don’t know how safe the beach is now because currents ( 洋流 ) could be changed and it’ ll take a little bit of time.” He instead recommends visitors enjoy the soft sand and leave the swimming to the dolphins that frequent the area.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Dooagh Beach has pulled a disappearing and reappearing act. It disappeared in the 1890s, for over 30 years, before returning in 1927. However, the locals are optimistic that this time around, the beautiful sand is here to stay.

1What has made Achill Island famous worldwide recently?

A.An unusual storm. B.The decrease in the number of residents.

C.The return of its beach. D.The building of a new tourist destination.

2What happened to Dooagh in the past three decades?

A.Tourism went down gradually. B.Restaurant developed slowly.

C.Storms attacked frequently. D.Rock pools disappeared completely.

3What should tourists avoid according to Sean Molloy?

A.Spoiling the shores. B.Getting into the rock pools.

C.Playing with dolphins. D.Swimming near the beaches.

  • 23、   Many of us start the day by commuting, or travelling, to work. We drop off our children at school. We may visit the doctor or go to the market to buy food. We rush home to see our families.

People who live in big cities spend a lot of time talking about traffic. There are some terms you need to know when talking about it.

One such term is gridlock. Gridlock is when nobody can go anywhere. The roads become one big parking lot.

There is also stop-and-start traffic. This is when you move forward a little, but then stop. Move a little. Then stop. Both are equally stressful.

Traffic can be bumper-to-bumper. This means there are so many cars on the road that their bumpers seem to be touching. To idle means the engine of your car is running, but you are not moving. . . anywhere.

Another term to know is rush hour traffic. Rush hour traffic happens at about the same time every day—when people are commuting to and from work.

Then, what can cities do to reduce traffic problems?

One thing cities can do is to supply more public transportation.

Let us now take a closer look at the city with the worst traffic in the world—Jakarta. Jakarta's metropolitan area is home to about 24 million people. But only 13 percent of all trips are on public transportation.

Investment in public transport in the Indonesian capital began in 2004. Workers are building the first part of a public transport system, known as the Mass Rapid Transit railway.

Another thing cities can do to limit traffic is to charge money to drive in certain parts of the city. Next year, Jakarta plans to start charging drivers more to travel on two heavily congested roads.

Jakarta officials have also banned motorcycles from the main roads in the city.

Until cities with traffic problems find ways to get people from Point A to Point B more efficiently, they can only envy people in Tampere, Finland and Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Researches have found that these two cities have the fastest moving traffic.

【1】Which of the following terms refers to the situation in which you cannot move your car at all?

    A.stop-and-start traffic

    B.bumper-to-bumper

    C.gridlock

    D.rush hour traffic

【2】To reduce traffic problems, cities can do all of the following EXCEPT ________.

A.encourage citizens to walk from one place to another

B.charge drivers money for driving in certain parts of the city

C.prohibit motorcycles from the main roads in the city

    D.invest more in public transportation

【3】What is the author’s purpose of writing the first paragraph?

A.To show that we are always very busy.

B.To show that we love our children very much.

C.To show that we are hardworking.

D.To show that we have to use the traffic quite often.

  • 24、In the winter of 1664-65, a bitter cold fell on London in the days before Christmas. Above the city, an unusually bright comet (彗星) shot across the sky, exciting much prediction of a snow storm. Outside the city wall, a woman was announced dead of a disease that was spreading in that area. Her house was locked up and the phrase “Lord Have Mercy On Us” was painted on the door in red.

By the following Christmas, the virus that had killed the woman would go on to kill nearly 100,000 people living in and around London — almost a third of those who did not flee.

In The Great Plague (瘟疫), historian A. Lloyd Moote and microbiologist Dorothy C. Moote provide a deeply informed account of this plague year. Reading the book, readers are taken from the palaces of the city’s wealthiest citizens to the poor areas where the vast majority of Londoners were living, and to the surrounding countryside with those who fled. The Mootes point out that, even at the height of the plague, the city did not fall into chaos. Doctors, nurses and the church staff remained in the city to care for the sick; city officials tried their best to fight the crisis with all the legal tools; and commerce continued even as businesses shut down.

To describe life and death in and around London, the authors focus on the experiences of nine individuals. Through their letters and diaries, the Mootes offer fresh descriptions of key issues in the history of the Great Plague: how different communities understood and experienced the disease; how medical, religious, and government bodies reacted; how well the social order held together; the economic and moral dilemmas people faced when debating whether to flee the city; and the nature of the material, social, and spiritual resources supporting those who remained. Based on humanity (人性), the authors offer a masterful portrait of a city and its inhabitants attacked by — and daringly resisting — unimaginable horror.

【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.A comet always follows a storm.

B.London was under an approaching threat.

C.London was prepared for the disease.

D.The woman was the beginning of the disease.

【2】What do the Mootes say about London during the Great Plague?

    A.The city remained organized.

B.The plague spared the rich areas.

C.The people tried a lot in vain.

D.The majority fled and thus survived.

【3】Why do the Mootes focus on the nine individuals?

A.They were famous people in history.

B.They all managed to survive the Plague.

C.They provided vivid stories of humanity.

D.They united by thinking and acting as one.

【4】What’s the purpose of this text?

    A.To introduce a new book.

    B.To correct a misunderstanding.

    C.To report a new research.

D.To show respect to the authors.
