  • 21、When many people are worried that there are no more heroes in the modem society, two university students who lost their lives to rescue drowning children have shown that heroes still exist.

According to the Inner Mongolia Morning Post, the tragedy occurred on the afternoon of December 14, 2002 when three school students skating on a frozen lake in Qingcheng Park in Hohhot fell through the ice into the freezing water.

More than 20 university students who happened to be near the spot immediately went to the rescue of the children.

Two children were quickly rescued, but the third died. The child’s body was not found for three hours. Two of the rescuers, Liu Ye and Hao Longbiao, also died of cold and exhaustion(筋疲力尽).

The body of Hao who took the lead in jumping into the lake was not found until the next day.

A student who was unwilling to tell his name said he and his classmates from the local college were taking photos at the lake. When they heard the children’s cries for help, they went to the ice hole hand in hand to rescue the children. But the ice kept breaking, causing most of them to fall into the icy water.

Local residents held mourning ceremonies (祭奠仪式) at the lake.

Eight of the students were seriously affected by the freezing water and were being kept in hospital for further observation, but their lives were no longer in danger.

  • 22、   For athletes and volunteers, next year’s Tokyo Olympics could become known as the Get-Up-Early Games.

Hoping to beat the summer heat in the Japanese capital, organizers said on Tuesday they will start the men’s 50-kilometer race walk final at 5:30 am, while the men’s and the women’s marathon finals will go at 6 am. The men’s and the women’s triathlon start at 7:30 am. The women’s softball has games scheduled for 9 am, but no men’s baseball games will start before noon.

“A 9 am start is early. That’s my impression,” said Reika Utsugi, head coach of Japan’s women’s softball team. “But we will have one year for the preparation. Softball cannot decide the times.” Softball and baseball were dropped after the 2008 Olympics, and are appearing because of their popularity in Japan.

The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were held in the autumn and did not face heat problems. Modern Olympics which are held every four years can no longer be held during that time, avoiding Europe’s crowded soccer schedule, and year-round scheduling of baseball, basketball and hockey in the US. Koji Murofushi, sports director of the Tokyo Games, said organizers had consulted about scheduling with the International Olympic Committee(IOC), the governing bodies of the individual sports, athletes and medical experts. He said athletes would be able to adapt.

“When we look at the Olympic Games as a whole, of course we need to consider the global audience, adjust and control the overall schedule,” Murofushi said. “Athletes, when they know the schedule in advance, can make adjustments to their preparations.”

As previously announced, the swimming finals will begin at 10:30 am. The swim schedule has nothing to do with the heat and will follow the pattern of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Organizers say the first gold medal event will be the women’s 10-meter air rifle, which will take place on July 25 – the day after the opening ceremony. Organizers have labeled Aug 8 – the day before the closing ceremony – as “Super Saturday”, with about 30 finals, the most of any single day. Finals will include the men’s basketball, the men’s soccer and the men’s baseball.

The most difficult event to schedule might be surfing. Organizers have blocked out eight days for the event, hoping surf’s up for at least four of them. It’s a four-day competition. “The schedule is subject to change depending on the wave conditions,” organizers said.

1The organizers of the Tokyo Olympics will start some events earlier EXCEPT ________.

    A. the women’s marathon finals B. the men’s triathlon

    C. the women’s softball games D. the swimming finals

2What can we infer from the passage?

    A. The softball game is usually held in the late afternoon.

    B. It’s impossible for athletes to deal with the new schedule.

    C. The baseball game was cancelled at two Olympic Games.

    D. The organizers changed the schedule without consideration.

3The IOC changed the time of the Olympics Games to ________.

    A. beat the summer heat B. meet the needs of athletes

    C. avoid famous competitions D. give athletes time to prepare

4As to the events and awards at the Tokyo Olympics, we can know that ________.

    A. the men’s 10-meter air rifle will be the first event

    B. Aug 8 will be the day with the most gold medals awarded

    C. surfing which is easy to schedule will be a four-day competition

    D. the men’s basketball will take place before “Super Saturday”

  • 23、   Sometimes life can seem challenging and we usually get the feeling that however happy we are,we never seem to be satisfied .We usually feel upset with the troubles that life throws at us.The best thing to do at that point of time is to close our eyes and start counting of all the blessings in life that God has given us.

If we think deeply, our life is full of blessings that we hardly recognize.Listening to the singing of birds early in the morning,we realize that there are many people who spend their life in a world that is silent while many others spend their lives in a world that is dark and may have never seen a rainbow(彩虹) or the setting sun.

When you go out for a drive, pull down the window and look at the poor beggar standing under the hot sun, begging for filling his hungry stomach. We get three meals a day without realizing its importance.Isn't that a blessing?

Whenever you are sad, look at the eyes of your parents and family filled with love and concern for you. There are many people who have never experienced the love of a family.Isn't that a blessing?

As Mother Teresa once said,"We don't need to do great things. We need to do small things with great love".

The key to a happy life is when we consider others’ problems to be our own and try to help them. When we love people without any expectations and help them, our heart is filled with a sense of happiness and peace.

So next time whenever life knocks you down, close your eyes and start counting!

  • 24、   Are you smarter than your parents and grandparents? According to James Flynn, a professor at a New Zealand university, you are! Over the course of the last century, people’s IQ test scores have gotten steadily higher — on average, three points higher each decade. This improvement is known as the “Flynn effect”, and scientists want to know what is behind it.

IQ tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge. Flynn believes that intelligence partly comes from our parents and partly is the result of our environment, but the improvement in test scores has been happening too quickly to be explained by heredity (遗传). So what occurred in the 20th century to help people achieve higher scores?

Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect. Some suggest that the improved test scores simply reflect an increased exposure to tests in general and the learning of test-taking techniques that help us perform better on any test. Others have pointed to better nutrition. Babies now are born larger, healthier, and with more brain development than in the past. Another suggested explanation is a change in educational styles, with teachers encouraging children to learn by discovering things for themselves rather than just memorizing information, which improves their problem-solving skills.

Flynn has limited the possible explanations after carefully examining test data and discovering that the improvement in scores has taken place in only certain parts of the IQ test. Test-takers are not doing better on the math or vocabulary sections of the test; they are doing better on the sections requiring reasoning and problem solving. For example, one part of the test shows a set of shapes, and test-takers must find the patterns and connections between them.

According to Flynn, this visual intelligence improves as the amount of technology in our lives increases. Every time you play a computer game, you are exercising exactly the kind of thinking and problem solving that helps you do well on one kind of intelligence test. So are you really smarter than your parents? In one very specific way, you may be.

1According to the passage, the “Flynn effect” is ________.

A.an increase in IQ test scores over time

B.a method used to measure intelligence

C.the influence of technology on intelligence

D.a theory that connects intelligence to experience

2What is the function of the third paragraph?

A.To list the findings of Professor Flynn’s research.

B.To provide possible explanations that disprove Flynn’s ideas.

C.To outline different theories explaining the increase in IQ scores.

D.To describe how research was carried out in the measuring of intelligence.

3According to the passage, newer educational techniques include _________.

    A.exposing children to fewer tests

    B.giving children clearer teaching instructions

C.getting children to memorize lots of information

D.encouraging children to find out things themselves

4The writer believes that computer games _________.

A.have discouraged people from taking exercise

B.have helped improve people’s visual intelligence

C.have made young people become less intelligent

D.have caused young people to have poorer vocabularies

5Which statement would Professor Flynn agree with?

A.Development of technology contributes to intelligence improvement on math.

B.Not all aspects of intelligence have increased.

C.The IQ test pattern should be changed.

D.The language ability of people has improved.
