  • 21、   English Village is near the city of Paju in South Korea. It has a concert hall theater, and even a city hall. There are restaurants and coffee shops too, and the waiters in them are all English-speaking foreign teachers.

Students of about 13 or 14 years old are sent here to study English for two to four weeks. From nine to nine each day, they put their hearts into games, activities and tasks, which are specially designed to get them to communicate with English speakers. One of the most popular activities is making their own videos by using digital cameras and computers. The students are then asked to talk about their films in English.

There are lots of places for the kids to practice English speaking. For example, they can take money out of a pretend bank, and then use it to tip their waiter at the restaurant.

English village was built by Jeffrey John, an American businessman. He has worked in South Korea for a long time. He wants to make English learning be a happy and enjoyable task. “Everyone in Korea seems afraid of meeting and talking with foreigners,” said John, “but as you can see, the young girls who spent only three days in English Village are a lot more confident. They are no longer afraid of meeting foreigners and answering questions in English.”

1What is one of the children’s favorite activities in English Village?

A.Going to the theatre. B.Chatting in the restaurants.

C.Working in the pretend bank. D.Making films by themselves.

2Why did John build English Village?

A.He wanted to make a lot of money.

B.He wanted to make English leaning fun.

C.He wanted to make a lot of friends.

D.He wanted to be a good English teacher.

3It can be inferred that John ______.

    A.is doing business in America

B.is good at making his own films

C.is now staying in South Korea

D.is learning languages in South Korea

4According to John, English learning in English Village is______

    A.successful B.boring C.difficult D.passive

  • 22、Recently, a case of lifeboat ethics occurred. On Aug. 4, Graham and Sheryl Anley, while boating off the coast of South Africa, hit a rock. As the boat threatened to sink, the husband got off, but his wife was trapped in the boat. Instead of freeing his wife and getting her to shore, Graham grabbed Rosie, their pet dog. With Rosie safe and sound, Graham returned for Sheryl. All are doing fine.

It’s great story, but it doesn’t strike me as especially newsworthy. News is supposed to be about something fairly unique, and recent research suggests that, in the right circumstances, lots of people also would have grabbed their Rosie first.

We have strange relationships with our pets. We look after our pets with great love and better health care than billions of people receive. We speak to pets with the same high-pitched voices that we use for babies. As an extreme example of our feelings about pets, the Nazis had strict laws that guaranteed the kind treatment of the pets of Jews being shipped to death camps.

A recent paper by George Regents University demonstrates this human involvement with pets to an astonishing extent. Participants in the study were told a situation in which a bus is out o control, bearing down on a dog and a human. Which do you save? With responses from more than 500 people, the answer was that it depended: What kind of human and what kind of dog?

Everyone would save a brother, grandparent or close friend rather than a strange dog. But when people considered their own dog VS people less connected with them -- a distant cousin or a hometown stranger -- votes a favor of saving the dog came rolling in. And an astonishing 40% of respondents, including 46% of women, voted to save their dog over a foreign tourist.

What does a finding like this mean? First, it is that your odds aren’t so good if you find yourself in another country with a bus bearing down on you and a cute dog. But it also points to something deeper: our unprecedented attitude toward animals, which got its start with the birth of kind - hearted societies in the 19th century.

We prison people who abuse animals, put ourselves in harm’s way in boats between whales an whalers and show sympathy to Bambi and his mother. We can extend sympathy to an animal and feel its pain like no other species. But let’s not be too proud of ourselves. As this study and too much of our history show, we’re pretty selective about how we extend our kindness to other human beings.

【1】Which of the following is true according to the article?

A.The story of the Anleys and their dog was too unique to be newsworthy.

B.Most people surveyed choose to save their own dog rather than a human.

C.It wa in the 19th century that human beings started to love their pets.

D.Human beings are more and more concerned with animals nowadays.

【2】What is the function of the first of paragraph?

A.To create a relaxing mood for readers.

B.To present the theme of this essay straightly.

C.To lead in the main topic of this essay.

D.To raise problems that will be solved later.

【3】The author mentions Nazi laws in the third paragraph ________.

A.to show how cruel the Nazis’ were to the Jews

B.as an example to persuade people not to love pets

C.to illustrate the strange relationship between human and pets

D.as an example to display the kindness of the Nazis

【4】What does the author mainly argue for?

A.Pets are of great significance to us human beings.

B.We should rethink about out attitude towards animals and mankind.

C.It is kind of human beings to extend kindness to animals.

D.We should be selective when showing attitude toward other human beings.

  • 23、   An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old son. Suddenly a crow (乌鸦) landed on their window.

The father asked his son, “What is that?”

The son replied, “That is a crow.”

After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?”

The son said, “Father, I told you just now. It’s a crow.”

After a little while, the father asked his son the same question for the third time, “What is this?”

This time, the son said to his father in a low and cold tone, “It’s a crow, a crow.”

After a moment, the father yet again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?”

This time his son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? I have told you already, ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”

A minute later the father went to his room and came back with a diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.

Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window edge. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied him 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I didn’t at all feel angry, but instead felt affection for my son.

If your parents reach old age, do not look at them as a burden, but speak to them gently, and be kind to them. From today say this aloud, “I want to see my parents happy forever. They have cared for me ever since I was a little child. They have always showered me with love. I will take care of my old parents in the best way no matter how they behave.”

1How many times did the father asked the same question?

    A.Twice. B.Third times.

    C.Four times. D.Five times.

2How did the son probably feel when his father asked him the same question repeatedly?

    A.Surprised. B.Concerned.

    C.Impatient. D.Happy.

3How old was the father when he wrote the diary?

    A.Thirty-eight. B.Twenty-three

    C.Forty-five. D.Eighty.

4Why did the old man take out the diary he had kept?

A.Because he forgot what had happened.

B.Because he would like his son to read it.

C.Because it could remind himself of the past.

D.Because he wanted to find what a crow was.

5What is the purpose of the text?

A.To tell us a funny story.

B.To teach us what a crow is.

C.To call on us to love our parents

D.To encourage us to keep diaries.

  • 24、Imagine an island untouched by humans and without any large mammals. Colorful and strange birds of all shapes and sizes fly over forests and seaside hills. The sky is painted with endless clouds. Flightless birds nest safely on the ground, and seabirds cover the beaches. The sound of the bird song is overwhelming. The Maori named this place “Aotearoa”, land of the Long White Cloud. The world now knows it as New Zealand.

When the Maori sailed their canoes across the Pacific Ocean from their homeland, Hawaiki, at least 120 different species of birds lived in Aotearoa. Eleven species of moa, an ostrich-like bird, moved freely, and the largest stood 11 feet tall. The Haast’s eagle dominated the skies with its wing span of nearly 10 feet. Because bats were the only mammals(哺乳动物), Aotearoa was an actual bird paradise.

Unfortunately, the Maori overhunted the moa for meat. As the moa disappeared, the Haast's eagle lost its primary food source. By the time Europeans arrived in New Zealand, both birds were extinct.

When European settlers arrived, they brought animals that attacked birds. These non-native animals exploded in number because they had no predators. Birds also lost habitat as forests were cut down for wood and pastures.

Within a few hundred years of humans’ discovering and living in New Zealand, more than half the unique bird species were extinct. The whekau, found throughout New Zealand in the1800s, was declared extinct in 1914. The piopio, considered the best songbird in Aotearoa, was last seen in the mid-1900s.

Thirty percent of the species now alive are in danger because of other animals and loss of habitat. Scientists estimate nature would take 50 million years to replace the birds lost over the last 1, 000 years. New Zealand conservationists are working to save the threatened species.

【1】What does the first paragraph tell us?

A.New Zealand is a paradise for birds.

    B.Aotearoa does not really exist.

    C.The Maori founded New Zealand.

D.No mammals lived on the island.

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according the text?

A.Logging makes birds lose their habitat.

B.Haast’s eagle and bats dominated the skies.

C.There aren’t any mammals on the island of Aotearoa.

D.Non-native animals have little impact on the native species.

【3】What mainly caused the disappearance of birds?

    A.The increase in farmland.

    B.The arrival of Europeans.

    C.The lack of food sources.

D.Threats from man and other animals.

【4】What is the author most likely to talk about next?

    A.Why local officials stop hunting.

B.What living conditions for natives are like.

C.How many animals have survived on the island.

D.What efforts conservationists take to guard bird species.
