二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What will life in the future be like? Will it be much better than it is now? And what will we be able to do in 10, 20 or 30 years’ time?

Genetic engineering (基因工程) may help us make the perfect human. Babies may grow up to play basketball like Yao Ming or look like Cecilia Cheung. Also, we may be able to bring the dead back to life. Maybe people will be able to meet and talk with their dead family members.

Over the next 20 to 50 years, it will become harder to tell the difference between humans and machines. Perhaps we will be able to make copies of ourselves, so we will appear to be alive long after we are dead. People may be able to find ways of putting the life of a person into a new body.

Nanobots (纳米机器人) will be important. We will use them when we are sick. For example, when we have a stomachache, we will swallow (吞下) a nanobot and it will travel through our stomach, taking a video of what’s happening there. The video will help the doctor cure us.

In the future, computers may have their feelings. They may be able to think better than us. We may be more and more interested in computers and the internet, spending all our time in front of computers. Perhaps we will forget our real needs. Perhaps we will become super couch potatoes weighing 250 kg!

    A.talk like human beings

    B.have feelings

  • 24、Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict," he jokes. "I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled." Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears necktie. "I'm working harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable."

More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-down Friday" or "casual Friday." "What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing," said business consultant Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. "A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it's hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productive. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day," one person said.

"For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."

【1】David Smith refers to himself as having been "a clothes addict" because _____.

    A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt

    B. he couldn't stand a clean appearance

    C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time

    D. he didn't want to spend much money on clothes

【2】David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _____.

    A. they make him feel at ease when working

    B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes

    C. he looks handsome in casual clothes

    D. he no longer works for any company

【3】In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT _____.

    A. saving employees' money

    B. making employees more attractive

    C. improving employees' motivation

    D. making employees happier

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    Coffee on the wall

Big snowflakes were pouring down from the sky. I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice, Italy, a city of lights and water.

As we enjoyed our coffee, a well-dressed man entered, took off his hat and sat at an empty table beside us. He then called the waiter and placed his order saying. “Two cups of coffee, please. One of them there on the wall.”

Upon hearing this order, both of us were amazed, so we kept on observing with interest. It seemed that the waiter wasn’t surprised at all. He took the order and left. Ten minutes later, the waiter came back with only one cup of coffee. The man thanked the waiter and began to enjoy the coffee. However, when he left, he paid for two.

After the man left, the waiter returned to collect the cup and put a piece of paper on the wall saying “A cup of coffee”. Seeing this, my friend and I looked at each other with confusion.

Just as we were guessing what the piece of paper on the wall meant, two elegant ladies entered. They sat down at the same table and ordered three cups of coffee: two on the table and one on the wall. When the two ladies left, they paid for three cups of coffee. This time also, the waiter did the same: he put a piece of paper on the wall saying “A cup of coffee.”

It was something unique and confusing for us. Out of curiosity, we decided to stay in the shop and kept on watching. We glanced at the wall and found that there were three pieces of paper on the wall at that time.

About 30 minutes later, the door was opened and an old man entered. The old man was poorly dressed, which was quite unfit for a coffee shop. To our surprise, the waiter greeted the man respectfully and led him to the table near us.
