  • 21、I grew up in Algeria and as a female, I’ve had to pay an extra price throughout my scientific journey as a result. I knew studying abroad would be key to my success, so I was extremely excited when I won a scholarship to attend a British university for graduate school. But there was one condition: I needed to take an English test. I was fluent in Arabic and French, the languages spoken in Algeria, but I didn’t have a solid grasp of English. I learned it hard but didn’t score high enough to secure entrance. I had to stay in Algeria to complete a master’s degree instead. But I kept learning English on my own. Two years later, I earned a Ph. D. scholarship to study in Switzerland.

Midway through my Ph. D., a professor remarked, “ You are quite productive, but why don’t you publish in the regular journals in our field? ” Shocked, I responded, “ What do you mean by regular journals? ” He gave a few examples of all journals dominated by researchers from the Global North. I had been publishing my papers in specialized, low-impact journals. That was counted as a great achievement in my home country, where even professors struggle to get published. Now, I realized that the scientific accomplishments abroad I was proud of were regarded as below average at best. The professor’s comment heartened me to adjust my research to address issues of broader interest. By the time I graduated, I had started publishing in so-called “ regular ” journals, which helped me land a postdoctoral degree in Canada. I told all this to the members of my lab, adding that they were privileged to grow up speaking English and have access to tremendous expertise and funding. Facing global inequities, I’ve started to try using a preprint server to integrate an English language proofing (校对) system into its platform, which would connect authors who need language help. We can take steps to make the global scientific community more inclusive. And I want to be part of that push for change.

【1】Why was the author unable to go to a British university?

    A.She didn’t learn English.

    B.She failed the English test.

    C.She lacked a master’s degree.

D.She got the lowest entrance score.

【2】What does the author think of the comment of the professor in Switzerland?

    A.Inspiring.

    B.Heartless.

    C.Regular.

    D.Confusing.

【3】What’s the aim of the preprint server?

A.To establish an English language proofing system.

B.To set up a platform where English authors write.

C.To make the global community more inclusive.

D.To aid those who need help with language.

【4】Which words can best describe the author?

    A.Honest and athletic.

    B.Humble and considerate.

    C.Strong-willed and positive.

    D.Energetic and sympathetic.

  • 22、The girl was hanging by her hands from the railings of a balcony(阳台的栏杆). The balcony was on the twelfth floor of the high-rise block next to his. His flat was on the ninth floor and he had to look up to see her. It was half-past six in the morning. He had been awakened by the sound of an aircraft flying dangerously low overhead, and had got out of bed to look. His sleepy eyes, moved from the blue sky which was empty of cloud, empty of anything but the bright disappearing arrow of the aircraft, and then rested on the hanging figure.

He really thought he must be dreaming, for this sunrise time was the hour for dreams. Then, when he knew he wasn’t, he decided it must be a scene in a film. There were cameramen down there, a whole film unit, and all the correct safety precautions had been taken. Probably the girl wasn’t even a real girl, but a dummy(假人). He opened the window and looked down. The car park, paved courts, grass spaces between the blocks, all were deserted. On the balcony rail one of the dummy’s hands moved, desperately. He had to believe then what was obviously happening. The girl was trying to kill herself. She had lost her courage and now was trying to stay alive. All these thoughts and conclusions of his occupied about thirty seconds. Then he acted. He picked up the phone and dialed the emergency number for the police.

The arrival of the police cars and the rescue of the girl became the focus of talk for the people of the two blocks. Someone found out that it was he who had called the police and he became an unwilling hero. He was a modest, quiet young man, and was in relief when the talk began to die away. Again he was able to enter and leave his flat without being pointed at as a kind of St George and sometimes even congratulated.

About a fortnight after that morning, he was getting ready to go to the theatre, just putting on his overcoat, when the doorbell rang. He didn’t recognize the girl who stood outside. He had never seen her face. She said, “I’m Lydia Simpson. You saved my life. I’ve come to thank you.”

【1】What did the man do first after he got up?

    A. He looked down from the window.

    B. He went to see the noisy aircraft.

    C. He called the police to save the girl.

    D. He hurried to check who was outside.

【2】The moment the man saw the girl hanging there, he felt it was _________.

    A. scaring B. desperate

    C. unbelievable D. dangerous

【3】We can learn from the passage that __________.

    A. the man disliked to be talked about

    B. the girl was unwilling to be rescued

    C. the police arrived quickly on the scene

    D. the girl was actually an actress in a film

  • 24、Dyslexia is a learning disorder, it interferes with the ability to recognize words, and for some readers to understand what they have read. Experts say dyslexia affects about five to ten percent of the population of the United States. Researchers have long known that people with dyslexia write or read words and letters backwards in the wrong order.

But a new study shows that people with dyslexia may have trouble redirecting their attention between senses, from seeing something to hearing something. The study suggests something that might help dyslexic people learn more quickly - play video games.

Vanessa Harrar of Britain’s University of Oxford led the study. She reported the findings in the journalCurrent Biology. The study suggests that dyslexic people may have trouble moving quickly from what they read to what they hear.

In the study, Doctor Harrar tested 17 people with dyslexia, and 19 others without reading problems. The volunteers were asked to push a button as quickly as possible when they heard a sound, saw a light or experienced both together. Doctor Harrar compared the speed of their reactions. She found that people with dyslexia were just as fast as the others when they saw only a picture or heard only a sound. But the Dyslexicshad a slower reaction time when they heard a sound and saw a picture at the same time, this may have an effect on how dyslexic children are taught how to read.

Doctor Harrar feels like playing video games could help dyslexic people shift from seeing to hearing more quickly. She adds that images in video games force the eyes to move and focus quickly. “Video game types of things pop out of here and there, they move your eyes around the screen quite quickly in response to things quite quickly, and the more you play a video game the faster you get that kind of thing. So, the video game is really training the attention system to move quickly,” said Harrar. When children learn the alphabet, they usually see the letter first and then hear the sound, or they see and hear the letter at the same time. The study shows that Dyslexics might learn more quickly if they hear the sound of a letter or word first before seeing it.

1According to Doctor Harrar’s study, the dyslexic people have difficulty in______.

    A. recognizing words

    B. reading words backwards

    C. writing letters in order

    D. shifting from seeing to hearing

2Which factor affects the way dyslexic children are taught to read?

    A. They react more slowly to a single picture or sound

    B. They react as fast as others to a single picture or sound

    C. It takes them longer to react to sounds and pictures together

    D. It is difficult for them to understand before seeing the word

3How does the author suggest Dyslexics are taught based on the research finding?

    A. by putting hearing previous to seeing

    B. by training the attention on games

    C. by seeing first and then hearing later

    D. by moving the eyes around the screen

4What can be the best title of the passage?

    A. Video Games Might Help Dyslexics

    B. Dyslexia Affects Attention between Senses

    C. Video Games Can Train the Attention System
