二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   It’s always good to experience something new in life. Traveling gives plenty of such opportunities and when you choose a hotel to stay in next time, here, in this website, is a list of 4 most weird (怪异的) hotels in the world.

    Dog Bark Park Inn

If you keep a dog and love animals, then you will definitely become a fan of this hotel. Here visitors will find a microwave oven to prepare a simple meal, games, puzzles and books to entertain themselves, an air conditioner and of course a bath. There is no TV set or a phone though. Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin, the designers of this hotel, knew what might attract people. Next time you decide to visit Idaho, take a trip to Cottonwood to see the building.

    Das Park Hotel

You will love the place a lot because it is equipped and is perfectly adjusted to basic human needs. However, there is one disadvantage to all these. The matter is that bathroom facilities are not included in the price. Each room here is quite small, but has a bed, electricity and air conditioning.

    CasAnus

Read the name of the hotel attentively and you will easily guess what place exactly you are going to spend your vacation in! The hotel is situated in Kemzeke, Belgium and was designed by Joep van Lieshout. Do not say no to this hotel since it is quite comfortable and nice inside.

    Hobbit Motel

Deep inside we stay kids forever. This is what the creators of the Hobbit Motel kept in mind when they were creating this motel. Read some more of J.R.R. Tolkien or other books of this kind to fully understand and even feel the atmosphere of the place. The Hobbit Motel is located in Woodlyn Park, New Zealand. It invites visitors all year round. You will recognize the inn by its blocks it is made of and the green roof covered with a thick layer of grass.

1What can you know about the Dog Bark Park Inn?

A.It doesn’t provide food for visitors. B.Visitors can take their pets to it.

C.Its name may come from its appearance. D.Visitors can’t make phone calls there.

2People who choose to live in Das Park Hotel need to pay extra money for ________.

    A.Internet connectivity B.air conditioning

    C.electricity D.the shower

3Which is the best choice for a person who most values comfort?

A.The Dog Bark Park Inn B.Das Park Hotel

    C.CasAnus D.Hobbit Motel

  • 22、Wi-Fi: a word which has its own little brother in the form of a complicated (复杂的) password (密码) which, no matter how hard you try, you can never guess. A word which is so often stuck to the inside of windows in cafes and bars as an extra way of drawing customers inside. Last summer, I spent four months working in France, where the company I was working for put me up in a house which didn’t have Wi-Fi, meaning I had no access to the Internet.

I soon discovered, however, that living in a house without Wi-Fi, was easier than I expected.

Contact between my friends and family was significantly reduced to the occasional text message here and there. I couldn’t enjoy my usual web browsing (浏览) on BBC iPlayer, social media sites, keeping up to date with the news, or even wanting to know the opening hours of shops in the new area I was in.

I didn’t, however, spend a full four months without connecting to a Wi-Fi network. It was only a five-minute walk to the reception where I could connect for free and spend as much time online as I wanted to at my leisure. It made me think, though, how unnecessary it can be, how unnecessarily we rely on it—how we perhaps over rely on it. As a person, I was more sociable. I spent more time with my housemates instead of being glued to a computer screen. I did other things that I wouldn’t necessarily have done if I could have browsed the web at my leisure. I cooked meals for my friends, and I even tidied up more often. Above all else, I read some classics. Dare I say it: I learned how to live without Wi-Fi. Dare I say it; I found it was easier than I had imagined.

【1】What do cafes and bars use Wi-Fi to do according to the first paragraph?

    A.To advertise their drinks.

    B.To save time.

C.To keep in contact with customers.

    D.To attract customers.

【2】How did the author keep in touch with his family when he was in France?

    A.By flying home.

    B.By writing letters.

    C.By texting.

    D.By sending e-mails.

【3】Which of the following can describe the author’s life in France?

    A.He didn’t use Wi-Fi.

    B.He visited his friends frequently.

C.He made full use of time.

    D.He was homesick.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Life without Wi-Fi

    B.Life in France

    C.Wi-Fi—A Popular Word

    D.My Unusual Experience

  • 23、   After Reuben Schoots was ill, he found himself with nothing but time on his hands. He dropped 35 pounds and was so weak that he could barely make it out of bed. He lost his job and stopped pursuing his course of study in nutrition at university.

Schoots realized that the life he'd known was over. He was depressed until the day something small caught his attention and would change his life. A visiting friend wore a mechanical glass-backed watch. Its movement was visible. Schoots was fascinated by the synchronicity(同步性)of all the tiny parts working together that made it run. Although watchmaking had never been a pursuit, he realized it was something truly appealing to him and that he could try it during his recovery.

Schoots devoted himself to the techniques of master watchmaker George Daniels, a man famous for his handmade creations. Schoots said only two other watchmakers besides himself had completed a timepiece. It's a process of trial and error of making and remaking; a process that in many ways mirrors Schoots' remaking of his entire life.

He's also come to understand how his own experience might serve as a positive example to those struggling with pandemic-related loneliness. “People are feeling negative and don't like this isolation(孤立).Change hurts,” he said. “But they undervalue the value of downtime and I think people are scared to be with themselves. Evolution comes out of downtime.”

2,500 hours into his project, Schoots is just two pieces shy of completing his first 100-percent handmade watch. The work isn't physically tiring, but it requires focus and concentration.

【1】Why did Schoots stop pursuing his course?

    A.He lost some weight.

    B.He lost interest in it.

    C.He was ill and weak.

D.He was forced to stop by others.

【2】What gave Schoots the idea to try watchmaking?

    A.His family's support.

    B.The structure of the watch.

    C.His friend's encouragement.

    D.The appearance of a watch.

【3】What is Schoots' attitude towards isolation and downtime?

    A.Positive.

    B.Negative.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Unclear.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.Schoots fights against illness.

B.Schoots realizes the value of isolation.

    C.Schoots picks up watchmaking.

    D.Schoots remakes life through watchmaking.

  • 24、   Everybody sleeps, but what people stay up late to catch or wake up early in order not to miss varies by culture. From data collected, it seems the things that cause us to lose the most sleep, on average, are sporting events, time changes, and holidays.

Russia’s late nights and early mornings generally correspond(相一致)to public holidays. On New Year’s Eve, Russians have the world’s latest bedtime, hitting the hay at around 3:30 a. m. Russians also get up an hour later on International Women’s Day, the day for treating and celebrating female relatives.

Similarly, Americans’ late nights, late mornings, and longest sleep fall on three-day weekends.

Canada got the least sleep of the year the night it beat Sweden in the Olympic hockey(冰球)final.

The World Cup is also chiefly responsible for sleep deprivation. The worst night for sleep in the U. K. was the night of the England-Italy match on June 14. British people stayed up a half-hour later to watch it, and then they woke up earlier than usual the next morning thanks to summer nights, the phenomenon in which the sun barely sets in northern countries in the summertime. That was nothing, though, compared to Germans, Italians, and the French, who stayed up around an hour and a half later on various days throughout the summer to watch the World Cup.

It should be made clear that not everyone has a tool to record their sleep patterns; in some of these nations, it’s likely that only the richest people do. And people who select to track their sleep may try to get more sleep than the average person. Even if that’s the case, the above findings are still striking. If the most health-conscious (注重健康的) among us have such deep swings(明显改变)in our sleep levels throughout the year, how much sleep are the rest of us losing?

1What do we learn about the Russians regarding sleep?

A.They don’t fall asleep until very late.

B.They don’t sleep much on weekends.

C.They get less sleep on public holidays.

D.They sleep longer than people elsewhere.

2The underlined word “deprivation” in the last paragraph but one means_______.

    A.depression B.trouble

    C.observation D.loss

3Why do some rich people use a tool to record their sleep patterns?

A.They want to get more sleep.

    B.They have trouble falling asleep.

C.They are involved in a sleep research.

D.They want to go to bed on regular hours.

4What does the author imply in the last paragraph?

A.It is important to study our sleep patterns.

B.Few people really know the importance of sleep.

C.Sleeplessness does harm to people’s health.

D.Average people probably sleep more than the rich.
