  • 21、Hoo, the online hotel room offer platform, has found that the level of staycations (宅度假) being taken across 16 global holiday hotspots has increased by an average of 18 percent when compared to this time last year.

With the cost of accommodation also climbing 16 percent, Hoo found more of an increase in domestic (国内) demand for travel. “This time last year, we were already starting to see caution where our holidays were concerned, as the growing threat of COVID caused uncertainty over travel plans. A year down the line and there’s an obvious shift away from international travel,” Hoo co-founder Adrian Murdock said in a statement. “Although we now remain in lockdown in many parts of the world, many are hoping that the easing of restrictions (限制) will allow domestic travel by the time the holiday season arrives.”

Hoo, a British-based company, is an online platform that allows users to book a hotel room at the advertised rate or to make an offer on the room which the hotel can accept or decline in real-time. The figures it collected from 16 key tourism markets show that, currently, an average of 76 percent of all bookings are for domestic holidays, with just 24 percent of bookings being made for holidays abroad. This is an 18 percent swing when compared to the same point last year when just 58 percent of bookings were for domestic holidays.

At the same time, this domestic demand seems to have caused an increase in the cost of staycations. Hoo also analyzed hotel room rates across major cities within each nation and found that the average cost of a room per night has increased by 16 percent.

【1】What can we learn from Adrian Murdock’s words?

    A.People are worried about COVID.

B.People can travel as they like soon.

    C.Domestic travel is greatly increasing.

D.International travel is not popular now.

【2】How does the author present the main idea?

    A.By telling stories.

    B.By giving reasons.

    C.By making comparisons.

    D.By showing examples.

【3】Which can be the best title of the text?

A.Free to Go for Domestic Holidays?

B.An Increase in the Cost of Staycations

    C.International Travel or Domestic Travel?

D.Staycations on the Rise Around the World

  • 22、“The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.” When it comes to device addiction, this may very well be the case. If you believe that how you engage with your smartphone has no impact on your children, think again.

One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were much more likely to have behavior issues. In short, this addiction led to “technoference”or interruption of everyday interactions between parents and kids. In some cases, this interruption happened in face-to-face conversations, and in other cases, the devices disrupted(干扰) playtime or meals. When this type of “technoference” occurred, parents rated their children as displaying more behavior problems, including whining, losing temper, sulking(生闷气), and becoming frustrated.

In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral(双边的) signaling systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the brain. For example, babies and kids are highly engaged with the daily words of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm. This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child's development.

With the arrival of smartphones, many parents are distracted and stuck in what experts are calling “continuous partial attention” mode. This leads to significant and repeated disruptions to the parent-child conversation flow, which can damage not only a child's language learning ability but also their school achievements overall.

While your habit may seem harmless, your kids may actually be copying your behavior and forming a dependence of their own. One study reported that some teenagers may spend up to 12 hours—half of an entire day—online and mindlessly swiping through social media apps without engaging in any one piece of content beyond a few seconds.

As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Try to limit time spent with technology, especially when it diverts(牵制) your attention from other priorities. Shut down smartphones at dinner. Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology brings. While you may not be able to completely cut ties with new modes of communication, you can be sure that your children get the one-on-one time they need to develop into healthy, happy adults.

【1】Why does the writer start the passage with the quote “The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.”?

A.To stress children will follow parents' example.

B.To provide evidence of device addiction.

C.To show the close bond between parent and children.

D.To highlight the final solution to device addiction.

【2】Which is TRUE according to the studies in the passage?

A.Children who use the phone tend to dose temper and become frustrated.

B.Children's poor school achievements are due to their addiction to social media.

C.The more engagement of parents, the better development of speech in children.

D.Children imitate parents' behavior but form their own harmless habits.

【3】The underlined word “distracted” in the fourth paragraph means ________.

    A.discouraged

    B.absent-minded

    C.disabled

    D.abnormal

【4】In what tone does the writer speak to parents in the last paragraph?

    A.Disrespectful

    B.Apologetic

    C.Negative

    D.Friendly

  • 23、It was 3:12 a. m. when nine-year-old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking of flames somewhere below there was not a sound in the two-story house at Baldwin, Long Island. With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen, 14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, collapsed on the lawn.

The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious, and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy remained calm and, as a fireman said later, “acted with all the self control of a trained adult. ”

On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance service, then got on with the task of saving his mother.

First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden.

He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smokefilled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor?

Grasping firmly a ball of string from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed upstairs to his mother's room. Tying one end of the string to her hand he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden.

Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan, “The string will lead you to Mother. ” Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor.

【1】Why did Glenn run downstairs first?

A.He wanted to find out what was happening.

B.He was worried about his mother's safety.

C.He wanted to save his sister and brother.

D.He went to see if his father had come back from work.

【2】How did Glenn help the firemen to find his mother?

A.By throwing water all over her and her bed.

B.By carrying her to safety with his brother.

C.By pushing and pulling his mother. 3

D.By tying a string to his mother's hand.

【3】What did Glenn do to protect himself in the fire?

A.He put a wet cloth around his head.

B.He threw water all over himself.

C.He hid himself in the bathroom.

D.He rushed out to the lawn.

【4】Glenn saved his family because .

A.his father had taught him to do so on the phone

B.he had learned something about first aid

C.he had dealt with the emergency calmly and wisely

D.he had followed his mother's instruction

  • 24、Do you experience worse car sickness in electric cars than in petrol cars? You’re not alone - and when it comes to self-driving cars, it may be even worse.

Although scientists aren’t exactly sure what causes motion sickness, it has to do with passengers losing the ability to predict future movements. When you read a magazine in a car, your eyes will signal to your brain that the car is not moving. However, your brain will recognize the vibrations (振动) and turns that the car makes. This can confuse the mind and make you start to feel sick.

As for electric cars, one-pedal (单踏板) driving is often linked to feelings of car sickness, according to the US Department of Energy. The one pedal does both the accelerating (加速) and braking (刹 车) - the driver steps on the pedal to increase speed and takes their foot off the pedal to slow down. If you stop accelerating, the one-pedal will automatically slow and stop the car. The deceleration caused by this system is thus more rapid than that of petrol cars, which may lead to motion sickness.

Another technological advance that can also be related to car sickness is the larger and increasing number of screens inside vehicles. These screens overburden users with visual information, which discourages them from looking outside, according to The Conversation. Passengers thereby lose their ability to take in the “correct” visual signals, such as the moving surroundings, which can lead to sickness.

Unfortunately, even when people get used to the movements of electric cars and experience less car sickness, self-driving vehicles might be another challenge for them. According to a 2015 study, as much as 12 percent of the US population may feel carsick while riding in autonomous vehicles.

To ensure the widespread usage of new types of vehicles, car producers are working to solve such problems with better technology. For example, Japanese company Honda is working on reducing the car’s “violent (猛烈的) ”acceleration by making changes to the engine, said Car Magazine.

【1】What is the possible cause of passengers experiencing motion sickness?

A.Lack of visual signals in the car.

    B.Unpredictable movements of the car.

C.Inability to sense vibrations and turns.

    D.The brain’s confusion about movements.

【2】What makes electric cars more likely to cause car sickness than petrol cars?

    A.Their unique driving mode.

    B.Their slow way of braking.

    C.Their violent acceleration.

    D.Their constant pedal adjustment.

【3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.Potential dangers of placing screens in cars.

B.A technology to reduce car sickness.

C.A design aspect in vehicles that causes car sickness.

D.Passengers’ different responses to car sickness.

【4】What is Honda doing to improve its cars?

    A.Developing a more powerful engine.

    B.Reducing their cars’ deceleration time.

    C.Making the cars’ acceleration smoother.

    D.Adding more automatic adjustment features.
