二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Most people know that awkward feeling when you step into an elevator with other people and try not to make eye contact.

But new research suggests it may be down to a subconscious(潜意识的)power struggle being played out as you make your way up or down.

A study found that people decide where they stand based on a micro social grading, established within seconds of entering the lift.

Rebekah Rousi, a Ph.D. student in cognitive science, conducted an study of elevator behaviour in two of the tallest office buildings in Adelaide, Australia.

As part of her research, she took a total of 30 lift rides in the two buildings, and discovered there was an established order to where people tended stand.

In a blog, she writes that more senior men seemed to direct themselves towards the back of the elevator cabins.

She said: 'In front of them were younger men, and in front of them were women of all ages.'

She also noticed there was a difference in where people directed their stare half way through the ride.

Men watched the monitors(监控器), looked in the side mirrors (in one building) to see themselves, and in the door mirrors (of the other building) to also watch others.

'Women would watch the monitors and avoid eye contact with other users (unless in conversation) and the mirrors,' she writes.

The student concluded it could be that people who are shyer stand toward the front, where they can't see other passengers, whereas brave people stand in the back, where they have a view of everyone else.

【1】According to Rebekah Rousi, senior men intend to stand ______ of the elevator cabins.

    A. in the front   B. in the middle

    C. near the side mirrors D. at the back

【2】 The underlined word them in paragraph 7 refers to ______.

    A. senior men B. younger women

    C. younger men   D. Women

【3】Why do women choose to stand in the front?

    A. Because they are too shy to make eye contact with others.

    B. Because they can have a view of everyone else.

    C. Because they want to show their power.

    D. Because they want to watch the monitors.

  • 22、A drunken burglar(盗贼) in the Orrell Park area of Liverpool, ended up leaping out of a window after a 10-year-old girl asked him to prove he was a superhero.

The drunken thief who pretended he was Superman to stop a child raising the alarm has been caught after he leapt from the apartment building in his pants to make the girl convinced.

Thief Ethan Adamson, 25, told police that he had broken into a fifth-floor flat after a drinking session, believing it was empty.

But he was horrified when the owner’s 10-year-old daughter woke up while he was there.

From his hospital bed, the thief told reporters, “To keep her quiet, I told her I was really Superman and I’d soon be flying off back to my secret headquarters.”

“She called my bluff (吓唬) and told me, ‘If you’re Superman, show me you can fly or I’ll scream’.

“I had no choice so I stripped to my pants to look more like a superhero and went to the window. I saw another roof below and I thought I could make it but it turned out to be a lot further down than thought. I know it doesn’t make sense but it did to me when I was drunk.”

Police later found him on the roof in just his yellow pants, covered in cuts and bruises after a baffled neighbor heard his cries of pain.

He now faces seven years behind bars for burglary.

Police spokesman Frank Amado said, “He was in quite a serious state and couldn’t move until we got up there using ladders. • 23、   I wanted to be a journalist when I was 12 years old. I used to sit in front of the TV in my family’s living room, imitating what the presenters said on the morning shows. I knew one day I would move to New York City to work in television.

So when I got a job at one of the three big networks in New York at the age of 24, I was elated. This was where I had always wanted to be. I spent the next 12 years in a variety of roles at the same company. I had the perfect arrangement that most people thought - a job for life. “You're so lucky” was what I heard over and over again. And I was.

But I also started to notice cracks (裂缝) in the media world I had come to love so much. A new kind of competition cropped up in the form of social media and new digital media. News was changing. I knew I couldn't stay where I was; I must accept the change and be part of creating it. When I told my colleagues that I was thinking about leaving the network and going to work at an online start-up, I got a lot of crazy looks. “Why would you make such a risky move?” “What if it fails?” “You can’t be seriously considering this.”

I didn't listen to their advice because I knew not every good experience is defined(定义) by success or failure. Sometimes it’s about running the risk pushing the limits and having faith in an idea. What would the world be like today if we only acted when we could see the outcome?

Our new online company, Huffpost Live, has been on the air for several months and is doing amazingly well. I didn't listen when people told me to take the safe route. I’m proud that I didn't take the advice of the so-called experts and chose to make the change.

1What does the underlined word “elated” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Surprised. B.Worried.

    C.Excited. D.Confident.

2Why did the author leave her previous job?

A.The boredom in the media industry. B.The rapid development of new media.

C.The bad relationship with her colleagues. D.The large amount of work in the company.

3What can we infer about the author?

A.She had no experience of failure. B.She didn't mind what others said.

C.She acted after knowing the outcome. D.She had a better understanding of success.

4What did the author think of her decision?

A.She wasn't sure of that. B.She had taken great risks.

C.She felt regret about that. D.She made a right decision.

  • 24、   As the Hubble Space Telescope celebrates 25 years in space this week, NASA and its international partners are building an even more powerful toolthe James Webb Space Telescope. This telescope will be 100 times more powerful than Hubble.

“JWST will be able to see back to about 200 million years after the Big Bang,” NASA said on its website. “What the Webb will really be doing is looking at the first galaxies of the universe,” Mark Clampin said. “We will also be able to look in very dark parts of the universe where stars are being born.”

Inside a large clean room where no dust can harm the telescope, a team of engineers dressed in white, work on building the JWST. The space telescope will weigh 6.4 tons. Its main mirror will be 6.5 meters in diameter(直径), three times as large as Hubble’s. JWST will carry four instruments, including cameras and spectrometers(分光仪) that can catch extremely weak signals.

“The Webb will have 70 times the light-gathering capacity of Hubble. So the combination of the large size and the infra-red(红外线的) capacities will allow us to observe this epic of the universe past,” explained Matt Greenhouse.

Even more the telescope should further the search for life elsewhere in the universe by opening a new window on planets outside the solar systemknown as exoplanetsthat might have water and orbit their stars at a suitable distance to prevent freezing or boiling. “Webb is big enough to have a high probability of finding evidence of life in the atmosphere of exoplanets,” said Greenhouse.

Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, which circles the Earth, the JWST will go even further, to a place 1.5 million kilometers away in space. That distance will keep the telescope cold, prevent it from being blinded by its own infra – red light and shelter it from radiation. The heavy telescope is scheduled to launch from French Guiana in October 2018. “Just as Hubble rewrote all the textbooks, Webb will rewrite it again,” said Greenhouse.

1What’s the major purpose of building the James Webb Space Telescope?

A.To replace the 25-year-old Hubble Space Telescope. B.To find aliens outside the solar system.

C.To rewrite all the textbooks. D.To look at the first galaxies of the universe.

2Which of the following is true?

A.Hubble can see back to about 200 million years after the Big Bang.

B.JWST is 100 times more powerful than Hubble.

C.JWST will be sent out of the solar system.

D.JWST is 70 times heavier than Hubble.

3How long is Hubble’s main mirror?

    A.About 2 meters. B.About 3 meters. C.About 1 meter. D.About 6 meters.

4What does the underlined word “exoplanets” in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.Planets outside the solar system. B.Planets outside the earth-moon system.

C.Planets without water or atmosphere. D.Planets in the first galaxies.
