Insects (昆虫) are a very healthy food. They have almost as much protein (蛋白质) as meat from a pig or cow and are low in fat. Eating insects is also very good for the environment since they need less land and water than larger animals.
Marcel Dicke, who studies insects, explained in a talk how insects also produce more meat from the food they eat. For example, imagine a farmer feeds a cow 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce about 1 pound of meat for people to eat. However, imagine the farmer gives a certain number of insects 10 pounds of food. Those 10 pounds of food produce 9 pounds of meat for people to eat!
Eating more insects can also help people in poor areas. Many people can raise and sell insects, which can provide jobs and food.
But insects will not replace (替代) animal meat very quickly. First, people in some countries would have to change how they think about eating insects. Many people in North America and Europe eat a lot of meat like beef and pork. But they do not traditionally eat insects. In fact, for many people in the west, eating insects sounds crazy! They believe insects are dirty and dangerous. Insects make them feel uncomfortable.
Some people are trying to deal with this problem. For example, David George Gordon wrote a book named “The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook”, which tries to show people that insects can be delicious. Other insect experts travel around telling people about the benefits (好处) of eating insects. But they still have a lot of work to do.
【1】Eating insects _____.
A. is not healthy
B. makes people put on fat
C. helps protect large animals
D. is environmentally friendly
【2】The example of Marcel Dicke is given to show _____.
A. the high cost of food production
B. it’s quite easy for farmers to raise insects
C. raising insects is a good choice for farmers
D. the different ways of feeding cows and insects
【3】The long way eating insects has to go mainly results from _____.
A. their terrible taste B. people’s old beliefs
C. family traditions D. eating methods
【4】We can infer from David and other insect experts that _____.
A. people can make a lot of money from insects
B. insects should be better protected
C. people should eat more insects
D. it’s dangerous to eat insects
22、 If you cannot afford to travel in any class above economy, flying generally sucks, either a little or a lot, depending on your tolerance level. But it especially sucks if you are too wide for the airline’s design.
Just getting to your seat can be a challenge, as your hips(臀部,髋) bounce from seat to seat on each side of the aisle(过道). If someone is standing up to put things in the overhead locker, there is a decision to be made about whether it’s worth trying to squeeze past. Everything is just slightly too small: the seats, the overhead lockers, even the bathrooms – and those, it seems, are getting even smaller.
The Washington Post recently reported that, on some newer planes flown by American, Delta and United airlines, the bathrooms in economy class are just 61cm wide: about 25cm narrower than the average portable toilet, and roughly the width of the average dishwasher. Your face might be the only thing you can poke in there comfortably – which makes it a poor design, considering what a passenger is likely to need the bathroom for.
According to the manufacturer, these “Advanced Spacewell” bathrooms make space for six additional passengers, which is great for the airlines’ financial bottom line. But what about the other bottom line? Concerning, well, bottoms that can’t fit into their planes’ bathrooms?
As bodies get bigger and aeroplane spaces get smaller, the wide among us have come up with solutions. Armrests that turn us into sausages(香肠) can be pulled up, or slowly encased(围住,包起) into the soft flesh of our sides until we go numb(麻木). We can ask the flight attendant to get us a seat-belt extender, if security has confiscated the one we brought with us, as can sometimes happen. But squeezing into a tiny toilet and closing the door behind us? Not workable.
Unlike the impossible task of squeezing down the aisle to your seat, or the side-to-side dance necessary to get big hips past the armrests, fitting into a space just 61cm wide is not just a challenge – it is almost impossible. It is not like missing out on an option for the in-flight meal – a bathroom is as essential as a safety-compliant seat belt, or the air that is pumped in to the cabin(飞机舱). If airlines are not willing to make space for us, bigger passengers may have no option but to reconsider booking a flight at all.
【1】What is the advantage of the new toilets?
A.More passengers can use them. B.The airlines can increase their profits.
C.They are more comfortable. D.They are practical and convenient.
【2】What does the underlined word ‘confiscated’ mean?
A.provided B.questioned C.checked D.taken
【3】What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Fat people can deal with many problems they face on planes.
B.Flight attendants are likely to be helpful when asked for assistance.
C.Flying is pleasant for overweight people at present.
D.People’s bodies are getting bigger year by year.
【4】The writer believes that bigger passengers _____.
A.will have to find more creative solutions in the future
B.should grasp the chance to lose weight before flying
C.should miss out on the option for the in-flight meal
D.might be unable to travel by air in the future
23、Many years ago,my student asked me the question,“Mrs.Kindred, why do you teach?”Without taking time to reflect,I answered,“Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone’s life.”Even though I was sincere, that wasn’t a very good answer and my student didn’t let it slide.
“Let me get this straight,”he said,“You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?”He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused.I’m one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty,or swift.
Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. In those days,I remind myself of the real reasons I teach.
It’s in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990.She instilled(逐渐灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.
Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond, the ripples will go on and on until they reach the shore. You can’t have ripples without a “stone”.Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that’s what I strive to do.
I genuinely love teenagers.
I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years.Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life,I want to do so.If they’ll allow me to celebrate their victories with them,I want to do so,too.
Teaching isn’t for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.
【1】Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writer’s being a teacher?
A. Because he thought her answer was unbelievable.
B. Because the writer was insincere.
C. Because the student was naughty.
D. Because the answer was difficult to understand.
【2】What do you think of the writer?

24、The Central African country of Gabon is home to two-thirds of all African forest elephants. The forests in Gabon are extremely dense. That makes it hard to know exactly how many forest elephants there are. But scientists have found a new way to count them. They use evidence that the animals leave behind. In other words, they look for elephant waste.
Researchers collected waste samples (样品) over a period of three years. The researchers walked about 12 kilometers each day. They looked for waste as well as other signs of elephants, including footprints and broken trees. They tested the waste samples for DNA. As a result, they learned that in Gabon, there are about 95,000 forest elephants. The earlier numbers were believed to be much lower, at 50,000 to 60,000.
Even with the new information, the International Union for Conservation of Nature believes the population of forest elephants in Central Africa has dropped sharply. It believes the numbers have decreased by 86 percent in the last 31 years. Forest elephants are threatened by land clearing and by hunters. What’s worse, climate change has reduced the amount of fruit available in the country’s forests. Because of this, the elephants are seeking food out from farms. This creates a conflict (冲突) between people and elephants.
The researchers who worked on the new elephant count said the animals live throughout Gabon, covering 90 percent of the total surface area. Almost 90 percent of the country is covered in forests. Emma Stokes is the area director for the Wildlife Conservation Society. She said Gabon is “very unique” or special, because elephants can be found in so many parts of the country.
During their counting efforts, the researchers looked for fresh waste. When they found a sample, they put it in a small glass container. After a period of time, they sent the containers to a laboratory in Libreville, Gabon’s capital. Scientists looked at about 2,500 samples. The DNA helped the scientists guess how many different elephants lived in the area where the samples came from.

26、Directions:Read the following passage.Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60words.Use your own words as far as possible.
Would you believe that your diet can make a big difference in keeping a youthful appearance? It seems strange to think that the food we take in could result in fewer wrinkles.Wouldn't it be better to put things on our skin rather than in our mouths?
Well, according to one scientific theory, our body starts aging because of oxidation. This means the certain oxygen containing molecules in our cells, called free radicals, have the capability to attach to and damage parts of our cells, including our DNA.Our bodies can repair this damage, but as we get older, these repair mechanisms start to break down, resulting in the signs of aging. Free radicals are actually reduced by our bodies, but their numbers can also increase because of the food we eat.
Besides avoiding foods which could potentially produce more free radicals, eating foods which contain certain vitamins and micro nutrients can also contribute to keeping us looking young. These vitamins help produce molecules called antioxidants, which actually help reduce the production of free radicals. Even better, foods containing antioxidants are not rare.Common antioxidants like vitamins A and E can be found in many dark-colored vegetables,For example, carrots, seaweed, spinach, and broccoli are excellent sources of these helpful vitamins,Also, you can eat orange-colored fruits like apricots and peaches.Vitamins A and E are particularly good for helping your skin remain young-looking. These nutrients strengthen your skin and make it soft. However,if you really want to stock up quickly on nutrients that benefit your skin, you should eat cow's liver. One small piece of cooked cow's liver contains twice as much vitamin A as half a cup of cooked carrots.
More recently, green tea has also been tentatively added to the list of youth promoting substances.Although research about green tea's effects on our bodies is.at an early stage, scientists certainly believe that it is good for us. Scientists, however, are still cautious about predicting its capability to keep us looking youthful. But from recent experiments, its antioxidant properties seem to be able to repair cell damage already sustained as well as prevent damage in the future. In fact, green tea works even better if you apply it directly to your skin as an ingredient in facial cream.
You are what you eat. This old proverb certainly seems to be true, the more we find out about how our body works.Think about that the next time you sit down at the table.
