二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Magazine Articles: More Valuable Than You May Think

Parents are often surprised when teachers suggest their children read magazines. Read on to learn about the benefits that reading magazines offers to young readers and how to introduce your children to the medium.

    Magazine Benefits

Magazine articles can provide reluctant readers with a lively, breezy writing style that can inspire them to read more.

The articles in magazines are generally short, which allows a child to finish reading a feature article without losing interest due to a short attention span. The writing in magazines also tends to be easy to read, especially if it is a children's publication.

By allowing your child to read magazines at an early age, you are encouraging development of a useful skill.【1】Getting into the habit of reading periodicals as a child will foster the habit of reading news articles that may continue into adulthood.

【2】 Magazine articles challenge students to think about issues they may have never considered or cause them to rethink their world view. Information is available in a wide variety of reading levels because magazines are written for every audience imaginable. Many publications cover the same material in different writing styles that might make it easier for your child to comprehend.

    Magazine Activities

Reading magazines as a family can be used to introduce each other to the various interests that each family member possesses. When your children are finished with their magazines, encourage them to pass their issue on to a sibling or other family member.

Once each family member has finished reading each magazine, you can use them for art and writing projects. These projects are for family members of all ages:

    1. Cut out pictures to help your preschool and kindergarten children learn their alphabet, numbers, and colors.

2.【3】 Paste the picture at the top of a page and have them write a story about what is happening or what the picture represents.

    3. Clip pictures to create a collage. Many teenagers love using their artistic talents to collage.

【4】The skills that students utilize and strengthen when reading magazines can be applied to higher level reading and other academic subjects. Encouraging your child to read by giving them a magazine subscription could cause them to take the leap from being a reluctant N reader to a voracious page-turner.

A.The format of magazines enables children to be exposed to a wide variety of subjects.

B.Magazines and newspapers provide adults with critical news.

C.Being exposed to magazines and newspapers benefits you a lot.

D.Keep interesting magazine pictures to give children story ideas.

E.Magazines are valuable assets for many people, but in particular to children.

F.Magazines and newspapers are expensive now but out of style.

  • 22、Learning Chinese as a second language is good for me in many ways.

【1】 Before learning Chinese it felt as if I were on a boat, sailing on the water and looking around but not truly being able to see the wonders that lay below me. But after being more familiar (熟悉的) with this language, I can read a large number of the words and write most of them, too. 【2】

Learning Chinese has also given me new pieces of knowledge. Now, I see the word "lion" written in Chinese and I can almost see the word that ancient Chinese people wrote to represent the king of the forest. 【3】 I came to learn that a few thousand years ago, ancient Chinese people already started grasping complicated concepts (掌握复杂概念) and putting them to use, most of which they fortunately wrote down. As a result, today we can read all about that knowledge and put it to use.

Books and characters aside, learning Chinese can raise musical skills and salaries (薪水). 【4】 Chinese just so happens to be one of these tonal (声调的) languages! Also, learning Chinese can give you job chances in mainland China, perhaps even as a translator. The more job choices you have, the more likely you are to earn a higher salary.

To learn Chinese, you can go to a Chinese school. 【5】 Anyway, I believe that learning Chinese can help you just as it has helped me!

A.I almost see a real lion, dancing before my eyes!

B.It has allowed me to understand my family better.

C.Or you can ask for help from a friend or family member.

D.Knowing a second language has helped me read interesting books.

E.Every time I visit China, I feel like a sailor entering a beautiful sea.

F.A study showed that learning tonal languages can help people learn music.

G.Without question, this has allowed me to enjoy more of the beauty of China.

  • 23、Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new material that can move heat out of buildings and into space. The researchers say the material can cool buildings even on hot days. The cooling material is a very thin sheet with many layers that could be placed on a roof like solar panels(). However, instead of turning sunlight into energy as solar panels do, the material turns heat into infrared(红外线的)radiation.

Shanhui Fan is an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University. He says that the panels have a layer of material that is like sand. The panels act like a mirror. They take heat out of buildings and reflect the light from the sun. And he says both the heat and sunlight arc sent 100 kilometers into outer space. "It's a structure that cools itself without electricity input, even under the sun. So, what it docs is basically radiate heat to outer space and also reflect the sunlight so it doesn't get heated up by the sun. Mr. Fan says it is like having a window into space. The heat is sent directly into space without increasing the air temperature

He says buildings in developing countries that do not have electricity or air conditioning could use the panels. "In areas where electricity is out of reach for many people, there is a potential benefit for storing medicine or even food. In many of these situations, being able to reduce the temperature is important. And this would provide a way to do it.”

The researchers say the main problem is creating actual cooling systems using the high-tech panels. They say it may be possible to develop a cooling spray(喷涂)that could be used on present solid structures. They believe the cooling spray technology could be developed in the next three to five years. They say as much as 15 percent of the energy used in the United States is spent providing power to air conditioning systems.

1What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

    A. Living on hot days is no longer a big problem now.

    B. Researchers are developing new solar panels on roofs.

    C. A new material is created to cool the buildings.

    D. The new material is a very thin sheet with many layers.

2According to paragraph2, how does the panel work?

    A. It takes in the heat and cools it down.

    B. It uses a mirror to reflect the sunlight.

    C. It has a window to let out the heat.

    D. It sends heat away right into space.

3Which of the following can best describe the advantage of the new panel?

    A. Convenient but impractical.

    B. Eco-friendly and energy-saving.

    C. Effective but expensive.

    D. Creative and cheap.

4What can you infer from the passage?

    A. The device of the new panel is still under research.

    B. Some people got benefits from producing the panels.

    C. It is impossible to solve the problem of creating actual cooling system.

    D. The new panels may save 15 percent of the energy.

  • 24、   A newly married woman called Grace lost her wallet at Gilleece’s bar with her wedding ring inside. Gilleece looked through the camera videos, watching the woman’s every step in the bar until she went outside to sit on a bench and left when her ride arrived. Then a young man approached the bench and put something in his pocket. Gilleece posted several pictures on the bar’s Facebook page, asking if anybody knew the guy.

Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Prather. Prather admitted having taken the wallet because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but just took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks into the ocean.

Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prather, told the teen to meet him at the bar. There, Prather said that, not getting along with his family, he had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece saw him as a kid rather than a criminal. But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could face prison. Gilleece planned to employ two divers to search for it. Meanwhile, the police wanted Gilleece to bring the teen to the station. He called them and said, “He’s going to be at the docks with me tomorrow.”

The next day a crowd gathered to watch the two divers search in the waters Prather mentioned. Finally a diver appeared with the wallet, and inside was the ring. Cheers burst from the crowd. The wallet’s owner immediately dropped the charges against Prather. But troubled by Prather sleeping in the cold woods, Gilleece told the teen he could stay with him and his family until he stood on his own feet. He also gave the kid a job at his bar.
