21、Children’s lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did?
It’s difficult to look back on one’s own childhood without some element of nostalgia (怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them. Playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring the nearby woods. My parents scarcely appear in these memories, except as providers either of meals or of severe blame after some particularly risky adventure.
These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed dramatically. Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isn’t time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today’s boys and girls spend much of their time alone. Another major change is that youngsters today tend to spend a huge amount of their free time at home, inside. More than anything this is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn’t dream of letting their children play outside by themselves.
Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different. Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The irony (令人啼笑皆非的事情) is that so many ways of playing games are called “interactive”. The fact that you can play electronic games on your own further increases the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today.
Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.

A. Young people today shouldn’t play electronic games
B. Some games that young people play today aren’t really good
C. Computer and video games have replaced the board games
D. Board games are much more interesting than computer games
【4】The writer’s attitude towards the childhood changing is .
A. approving B. unconcerned
C. objective D. optimistic
22、A discovery in animal science is causing quite a stir among dog owners nationwide. The discovery was made by distinguished researcher and veterinarian, Dr. Marty Goldstein.
“I used to spend a lot of time teaching owners to spot red flags---like restlessness, inactiveness, and antisocial behavior---so they can tell when their dog is asking for help right away,” he recalls. “But now, I want to help people take a more proactive approach to their dog’s health.”
It was this mission that led Dr. Marty to discover a remarkable new care technique that could help your dog lead the longest, healthiest life possible---no matter their age. “It was amazing to see the transformation, especially in older dogs who were already slowing down,” he says. “In a matter of weeks, their vitality noticeably improved. They had more energy, they were more playful, more flexible, more relaxed...it was pretty astonishing. Even their coats looked healthier.”
Over the course of his career, Dr. Marty has treated countless animals and been at the forefront of veterinary(兽医的)advancement for years, but believes this to be his most important discovery to date. “It’s rooted in science typically reserved for humans, but I’ve made it very simple to use for dogs,” he explains. “I think it’s exactly what our four-legged friends have been asking for.”
Earlier this month, Dr. Marty released an educational video for other dog owners, so they could follow his advice at home. If you’d like to try enhancing your pet’s life span using Dr. Marty’s approach, click below for more complete instructions.

23、As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their assignment and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”
“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
