二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Bees seem to fly aimlessly as they search for the sugary liquid called nectar(花蜜). But their flight plans actually do have a pattern. Flowers give bees clues(线索)about how much a plant can offer. Those clues can be in the color of petals(花瓣), in the type, in the smell. All of these characteristics send signals to the bees, telling them whether to land or not, among which the colors play the most important role. The insects keep track of the color of the flowers that are especially rich in nectar. They then visit more flowers of that color.

However, color can't promise bees a good meal. It may change depending on the angle at which sunlight hits its petals. A yellow follower, for example, may look somewhat blue from one angle and red from another. Beverley Glover studies plants at the University of Cambridge in England. Glover and her colleagues showed that even when the color of petals looks similar, bees behave differently in searching for nectar. They started to guess that the strength of petals' iridescence(色彩斑斓)might be related to how bees find the petals.

Glover and her colleagues tested their hypothesis in the lab. In their experiment, they found that bees felt confused sometimes when the petals were very iridescent and that bees had no problem finding the flowers with more nectar when the petals were not very iridescent. The team shared its new findings in the March 21 Current Biology. “At first glance, it's very surprising because animals can usually detect a more vivid signal more easily, says Klaus Lunau, a biologist in Germany, who was not involved in the study.

  • 28、All the housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to be the lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”

For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. The cupboards in kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to advise her against buying things but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say: “Madam, this is Your Lucky Day. Everything in your basket is free.”

One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. As she did so, she saw the manager of the supermarket approach her. “Madam,” he said, holding out his hand, “I want to congratulate you! • 29、When you think of the Arctic, you imagine an icy land of pure white snow. Others imagine it as the last really clean place left on earth. We have polluted the deepest oceans with plastic rubbish. “And now”, CNN says, “It's the Arctic's turn.”

German scientists have recently found microplastics (微塑料) in Arctic snow. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Sadly, the scientists found 1800 pieces of microplastics per liter of snow.

How is plastic pollution reaching the Arctic? According to scientists, “It's clear that most of the microplastics in the snow come from the air.” They fall off the plastic objects and are moved by the wind, just like dust. They mix with ice in the air and fall to the ground as snow. Finding these plastics in Arctic snow means that we may breathe them in.

Are they bad for us? Scientists cannot answer this question for now, according to the WHO. We do know that our bodies cannot take in “large” pieces of microplastics. However, if the plastics are small enough, they can find ways into our bodies and stay there for a long time, which can be bad for our health. What's more, earlier studies have shown that microplastics may contribute to lung cancer risk.

Microplastics have also been found in rivers and oceans around the world. Earlier research has found that they flow over long distances and into our oceans, hurting ecosystems along the way. They start in our wastewater, then flow into rivers and out to the sea, where they are eaten by sea animals. If people then eat these animals, it means that we're eating the plastic as well.

【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.The Arctic has been polluted by plastic rubbish

B.The Arctic is an icy land of pure white snow.

C.The Arctic is a beautiful icy land with clean air.

【2】Where do most of the microplatics in the snow come from?

    A.From water.

    B.From air.

    C.From wind.

    D.From food.

【3】What does the underlined expression mean in the fourth paragraph?

    A.Reduce.

    B.Donate.

    C.Cause.

    D.Help.

【4】How does the writer end this passage?

A.By advising us to drink clean water.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Every summer, hundreds of thousands of students travel to other countries looking for work and adventure. Most of the opportunities are in seasonal work, mainly connected with tourism and agriculture. The pay is usually poor, but most people work abroad for the thrill of travel. You can pick grapes in France, work on a family campsite, entertain kids on American summer camps, and of course, there are always jobs in hotels and restaurants.

But it is not as easy as it used to be to find work. “Unless you speak the language of the country will, there will be very few openings.” Says Anthea Ellis, an adviser on vacation work for students. “If you work as a nanny with a family in Italy, then of course you’ll have to speak Italian. When you arrive to wash dishes in a restaurant in Paris, the owner will expect you to speak French.”

Not everyone enjoys the experience. Sarah James was an assistant responsible for a summer camp group of forty America children in Europe. One child lost his passport; another became seriously ill and was flown home; four children were lost in Madrid for a whole day; the whole group was thrown out of one hotel because of the noise they made. “I did visit a lot of new places,” she says, “but it wasn’t worth it. The pay was awful and really was a 24-hour-a-day job. The kids never slept!”

“The trouble is, students expect to have an easy time of it,” Anthea Ellis points out. “After all, they see it as a holiday. In practice, though, you have to work hard. At the same time, all vacation work is casual work. You’ll have a job when the hotel, the restaurant, or the campsite is busy and you have few employment rights. As soon as the holiday season finished, they’ll get rid of you. If you don’t work hard, or if your employer doesn’t like you, you’ll get fired.”
