  • 21、   “Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen.”

After graduating from college in 1932, I decided to find a job as a sports announcer (播音员) on the radio. I took the bus to Chicago and knocked on the door o£ every radio station. But I was refused every time. In one studio a nice lady told me that big radio stations didn’t want to accept inexperienced persons. “Go to the countryside and find a small station thatmight give you a chance,” she said.

I returned home, Dixon in Illinois. My father said Smith Ward had opened a store and wanted a local sportsman to manage its sports department. Since I had played football at Dixon in high school, I applied. The job sounded just right for me, but I still failed in the interview. As I left his office, I felt sad. I asked aloud, “How can a man become a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”

I was waiting for the lift when I heard Smith Ward calling, “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he made me stand before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary (虚构的) game. As a result, I did a wonderful job and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game!

On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words again: Everything happens for the best if you carry on. One day something good will happen.

  • 22、How to Travel in Time

The term “NOSTALGIA”(怀旧)used to describe a mental disease. The “algia” bit means “pain”, and the word was coined by a 17th-century doctor treating homesick soldiers, whose symptoms included hallucinations(幻觉)and depression.【1】And it’s a great example of the benefits of a strong memory — choosing to recapture moments from the past to enjoy them all over again.

As evidence, a recent report highlighted the increase in old songs being streamed on Spotify during lockdown. It seems that we found strength in musical memories of happier times.【2】Because memory skills can take you into the future, too — bringing a whole new set of rewards.

In another pandemic experiment, people wrote letters to their future selves, and found that they improved their mood by imagining themselves safely on the other side of COVID-19. Here are my tips for becoming a confident time traveller yourself:

*To reawaken happy feelings, use all your senses—not just sight. Smell, taste, touch and sound will also help you to recreate the past in rich clarity. If you find a memory that’s particularly helpful — for reassurance, say — keep using it!【3】

    * When you’re procrastinating(拖延), visualise an end result. Flash forward to see the floor swept or the essay finished, and use that positive image to spur you into action.

    * Ahead of major challenges, imagine the full impact of success. Don’t just picture yourself getting that great job: fill your mind with the really big ways it’s going to change your life.

【4】But the more you learn to control your memory, the better you’ll be at mining your past, and shaping your future, to be your best self now.

A.There’ll still be times when old thoughts cause sadness, or you’re anxious about what’s next.

B.The usefulness of nostalgia seems to vary with age.

C.Today we have a much more positive attitude to nostalgia.

D.You’ll get faster at finding it, and add extra layers of detail each time.

E.The answer lies in connecting with your past and future selves.

F.But there’s also a growing body of research into time travel “the other way”.

  • 23、The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem he has is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

This is both encouraging and discouraging. The fact that we were all born to be artists is certainly exciting, and yet the reality has proven that many of us have failed to remain one.

Fortunately, some people have seen the problem and want to solve it.

Western educators have suggested that we introduce the concept of “STEAM” instead of “STEM”—traditional “core majors” including science, technology, engineering, and math—since the “A”, which stands for “art”, is just as important.

And on April 11, China’s Ministry of Education issued a guideline. Colleges and universities are required to provide more art-related courses and students need to earn a certain number of art credits in order to graduate.

These efforts came after many scientific studies had found that art education helps students develop self-confidence and teamwork skills, as well as habits of mind such as problem solving and critical thinking, according to The Washington Post.

It’s true that none of these skills is aimed for specific jobs. But as former US ballet dancer Damian Woetzel told The Atlantic, the purpose of art is “to give kids the tools to become adults who are creative, adaptable, and expressive—capable of having their eyes and ears and senses alive”. And we can now see how we lost track of our born “artist self” on our way to growing up: We failed to keep our abilities to see, hear and feel, and became blind, deaf and insensitive adults.

Hopefully, art education can help turn things around.

【1】What is the function of the first paragraph?

    A.To introduce the topic.

    B.To summarize the whole passage.

    C.To introduce a famous artist.

D.To encourage us to be artists.

【2】Why should the concept of “STEAM” be introduced according to western educators?

A.Art is as important as traditional “core majors”.

B.All of us should learn art in college.

C.Traditional “core majors” are out of date.

    D.Western education is more helpful.

【3】What can we predict from the guideline issued by China’s Ministry of Education?

A.More art-related courses will appear in all schools.

B.College students will have to gain enough art credits to graduate.

C.More students will major in art at colleges and universities.

D.Art will become much more important than science.

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Every child is an artist

    B.Learning from the artists

    C.Bringing art to life

    D.Life is art

  • 24、When I first arrived in Australia at the age of 16 to go to high school for one year and live with a host family, I was completely over the moon about everything. I had been planning for many months. But, even though all exchange students participated in a one-day preparatory meeting, culture shock couldn't be avoided.

Those first weeks are so-called “honeymoon phase Ⅰ” where you are happy to be in that culture. However, this feeling didn’t last forever. After about two months, differences became more evident. I started missing my friends and family more and more. Frustrating thoughts increasingly occupied my head-nobody really understands me, and my English is not good enough. I wish people would just he able to speak German for one day! I wish public transportation would work the same way as at home! And so on. I knew it was “honeymoon phase Ⅱ”.

Over the next few months, though, I slowly and unknowingly entered the “adjustment phase”. I developed my own little routine, learnt to adapt to stress through various techniques, and made many new friends. My English improved dramatically!

I understood Australian culture better and better. That was a major breakthrough for me personally. Every day I felt more and more comfortable with my new home. I adopted many new traits(特征) while also keeping earlier ones from my home country. I would often refer to myself as “having a second nationality”. This process which happened over my last few months abroad is called the “mastery phase”. My happiest moment was when my dear friend one day said during a conversation, “You are Australian now, Jude! You sound just like us!”

I want to point out that the effects of culture shock are different for everyone and can result in different behaviour and feelings. The timing of the different phases also varies a lot from person to person. One thing is for sure-though culture shock is unavoidable, acceptance is the first step towards adjusting better to a foreign culture.

【1】According to the passage, which phase is the most difficult to go through?

    A.Honeymoon phase Ⅰ.

    B.Honeymoon phase Ⅱ.

    C.Adjustment phase.

    D.Mastery phase.

【2】What happened in the “mastery phase”?

A.The author got rid of his earlier habits.

    B.The author quitted his nationality.

C.The author adjusted to the culture better.

D.The author made many new friends.

【3】What’s the most important thing to deal with culture shock?

    A.Ignoring it.

    B.Avoiding it.

    C.Accepting it.

    D.Changing it.

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted.

As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study. His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him. He handed his son a beautiful wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible?" He then stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and a wonderful family, but realizing his father was very old, he thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make the arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.
