二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Foldable future has arrived

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them as a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but foldable phone is about to show up. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both produced foldable phones, The Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. Mobile phone use has entered the “foldable future”, The Verge said.

The technology could change our lives in meaningful ways. These devices, because of their bendable screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket.

The technology could change other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modern cities, they will help us to make full use of space.

In a speech, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the foldable screen “the base for the smartphone of tomorrow”. “It’s a white paper for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

According to tech news website Android Authority, the necessary parts of foldable phones were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every 10 OLED screens produced were not perfect. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these foldable devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that few people will be able to afford.

But if the foldable device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming. Patrick Moorhead, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if foldable mobile screens are the future of smartphones; the only question is when and by whom.

1What is the main idea of Paragraph 3 and 4?

A.Possible advantages of the foldable screen.

B.Where the idea of foldable screens came from.

C.Popular foldable screen devices on the market.

D.People’s words on the foldable screen.

2What can we learn from Denison’s words?

A.The Galaxy Fold still has many problems.

B.The foldable screen has bright future.

C.The production of foldable phones will soon increase.

D.Companies need to work together to develop foldable phones.

3Which statement is TRUE about the problem of foldable phones now?

A.90 percent of their screens are not perfect.

B.Their screens are difficult to produce.

C.They are too expensive for most families.

D.They are not as useful as thought.

4What is the author’s attitude toward the future of the foldable screen?

    A.Positive B.Unconcerned

    C.Worried D.Cautious.

  • 22、Creating meat out of thin air sounds like the technology you’d only expect to see in sci-fi movies, but according to Air Protein, it’s real.

Air Protein, a company behind the air-based meat project, was founded by Dr. Lisa Dyson, a research physicist, with the goal of producing meat alternatives. These days, plant-based meat alternatives are all the fashion and are referred to as the future of the meat industry, but Air Protein is taking it to a new level with its air-sourced proteins or meat. They are basically relying on a group of microbes which can change CO2 into amino-acids, and the final product is a protein-based flour that can be used to make meatless products with proteins.

Air Protein is the only company at present involved in making proteins out of the air, but their technology was inspired by research that NASA carried out in the 1960s. They were trying to come up with ways that astronauts could grow their own food on space voyages and then discovered these microbes, which, fed on CO2 and produced amino-acids under the right condition.

The process behind is even harder to understand than what Air Protein has so far published. The magic happens in giant tanks that take up much less land than both cattle raising and plant growing, and the energy comes from renewable sources. Thus, it's both cheaper and greener than other meat alternatives. Besides, the protein-rich flour can be produced in several days, compared to the years needed to raise cattle and the months needed to grow crops.

But is the world ready for meat produced by CO2-munching microbes? Air Protein certainly believes so. Meat alternatives are attracting important financial support, and the demand from customers with awareness of ecology is certainly there, so it’s just a matter of creating a good enough product.

【1】What do we know about the meat created out of air?

A.It is mainly made from carbon dioxide.

B.It will totally change the meat industry.

C.It is created with technology in sci-fi films.

D.Microbes play a key role in the process.

【2】Where did Air Protein get the idea of making meat out of air?

A.From a report made by Air Protein in the past.

B.From the research on growing food in space.

C.From the discovery on Dyson’s space voyage.

D.From present fashion of meat alternatives.

【3】Why might the air-sourced meat be popular?

A.It is healthier and tastes more delicious.

B.Its process of producing is much simpler.

C.It can be created in a more eco-friendly way.

D.It can be used to create more kinds of products.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The world is really tired of the present meat.

B.The future of the air-sourced meat is bright.

C.Making the air-sourced meat is quite an unreal idea.

D.Customers have known the bad effects of present meat.

  • 23、   Around the world coronavirus outbreak has messed up children's education. They began to be shut out of classrooms all the way back in February in 2020. Even in countries where schools have stayed open, lessons and tests have been disrupted. Some countries pressed ahead with national exams this year. A few others, including Britain, France and Ireland, cancelled them all. They came up with new ways of awarding grades instead. The fact that big exams have proved so vulnerable to disruption has led to new questions about their usefulness. Are there better ways of measuring what children have learned?

Exams have plenty of problems. They are often unreliable; a study in Israel found that test-takers' performance can be affected by smog. Many children find them stressful. Plenty of places run them badly. School-leavers in some countries are often set nonsense questions that require students to answer. Countries, including Algeria and Ethiopia , make efforts to shut down the internet at exam time to prevent potential cheating. Grades in American high schools are inflating fast, in part because pushy middle-class parents insist their little darlings deserve better.

Cancelling exams does not always reduce pupils' anxiety. In many countries the prospect 一and pressure一of exams probably helped get pupils back into classrooms after lockdowns came to an end. Those facing important tests were generally invited back to school first. Their return helped give teachers and parents confidence that other. pupils could safely join them. Kenya ended up letting exam-takers return to school in October, even though it had previously announced that it was cancelling all classes until the end of 2020. Some countries that called off exams this year are still deciding whether and how to hold them in 2021.

Governments may need to adjust next year's tests, as many did this year. That could mean cutting the amount of material to be tested. Exam boards may also have to boost the grades of pupils who have spent the most time out of the classroom. But the most important exams should go ahead in some form.

Many pupils have studied ferociously throughout this difficult year. They should have the chance to earn the grades they deserve.

【1】In the Israeli study, what results in exam's unreliability?

A.Some countries shut down internet at exam time.

B.Exams' grades can be affected by children's temper.

C.Questions in exams measure what has been learned.

D.Teachers may give unreal grades to meet special needs.

【2】What can we know about the pressure of exams?

A.It always makes students anxious in exams.

B.It is relieved when exams are cancelled.

C.It gives teachers confidence to return school safely.

D.It helps students get back on track after quarantines.

【3】According to the last paragraph, what governments need to do next year?

    A.Change the testing materials.

    B.Cancel the most important exams.

C.Raise the grades of student who kept studying.

D.Reschedule the exams which are cancelled this year.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Education and Examinations

    B.Covid-19 and School Exams

    C.Ways Better than Examinations

    D.How to Pass Examinations

  • 24、When birds’ habitat is destroyed, some species don’t make it while others survive. But what happens at the very beginning of the process, just as a bird’s habitat starts to change? Research in Argentina’s Monte Desert has provided some answers. There are lots of trees, bushes, grasses and flowering plants in the protected parts of the desert. With so many options, most seed-eating birds choose to focus on large grass seeds. The birds can get all the energy and nutrients they need with minimal effort.

But when cattle show up to graze the desert’s natural landscape, birds face changes in food supply. Some birds are happy to change their diets in response. But others, not so much. And it’s the ones set in their ways that are at the highest risk. Understanding how birds react to grazing can help researchers solve the problem of those species.

Ecologists from the Argentine Arid Zones Research Institute compared soil samples from the desert’s Nacunan biosphere reserve to samples from two neighboring cattle farms. It was discovered that grass seeds — the birds’ favorites — were just one-quarter as likely to be found on the farms compared with the reserve. Next, they caught birds to see what they were eating. The Common Diuca-Finch and the Rufous-Collared Sparrow had adjusted their diets, choosing to eat their less preferred options on the farms, even while they still focused on large grass seeds in the reserve.

Meanwhile, the Many-Colored Chaco Finch and the Ringed Warbling-Finch were apparently unable to change their diets. Even on the farms, they worked hard to find the few grass seeds available. If they burn more energy searching for food than they get from the few grass seeds they find, they could starve. At best, their inflexible dietary could limit their ability to reproduce or to care for their young.

Studies like this can help predict which species are at higher risk and help farmers protect these poor species, even while allowing their livestock to graze. For example, the farmers can plant new species for their cattle that will also be more delicious and nutritious for local seed-eating birds. The cows won’t care about the menu change — but the birds sure will.

【1】Why can some seed-eating birds easily get their food in the protected parts of the desert?

    A.Because of plant diversity.

    B.Because there are fewer birds.

C.Because there are many small grass seeds.

D.Because of their long-distance flying ability.

【2】Researchers study how birds react to grazing so as to ________.

A.make birds and cattle live in peace

    B.help birds change their diets

    C.make cattle leave the desert

    D.help birds most in danger

【3】What did ecologists from the research institute find?

A.Birds only ate large grass seeds on the farms.

B.Some birds changed their diets in the reserve.

C.There were more birds’ favorite seeds on the farms than in the reserve.

D.Some birds chose their favorites in the reserve but other food on the farms.

【4】It can be inferred that grazing cattle can __________.

A.drive most birds off the farms

B.change the menu of some birds

C.make birds like other seeds best

D.have little effect on birds’ food chains

【5】Which proverb can best describe the method of farmers’ planting new species?

    A.Every coin has two sides.

B.Kill two birds with one stone.

C.Birds of a feather flock together.

D.There is no garden without weeds.
