二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Smart cities are coming. And you can be sure that hackers(黑客) won’t be very far behind.

We’ve already gotten a glimpse of that future, as cities across the globe start to use technology to connect their services and residents in ways that was science fiction just a few years ago. They are using sensors to collect data — such as traffic, garbage collecting, and road conditions —and then using that data to deliver services to more people and more efficiently.

But this rush to become a smart city has a major drawback: The more connected a city is, the easier it is to cyber-attacks. Hackers have, in recent years, effectively held cities hostage through ransom ware(赎金器), sometimes damaging critical systems for months at a time. The damage can cost millions to repair, as Baltimore and Atlanta have discovered.

And this is just the beginning. As cities add connectivity to their streetlights, power grids, dams, transit lines and other services, they are adding more targets that have the potential to be hacked. What’s more, as additional information on residents is collected, officials worry the result lots of data could attract nation-states or terrorists who could incorporate the data into physical and cyber war.

What cyber security lesson can’t be taught in this hack? For example: Don’t open email attachments from unfamiliar sources; don’t click on unrecognized links; don’t leave sensitive information visible on the walls or surfaces of your office. But let’s just stick to the most important lesson: The information you share on social media can be used to profile and target you, whether that’s by engineering click bait(点击诱饵) aimed at your particular interests, guessing your password based on your birthday or figuring out your schedule and travels so that an intruder can access your home or office.

Wednesday, September 18, 2019 THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.

C.Add some background information. D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

3What is officials’ attitude to big data?

A.It is convenient to provide service.

B.It is certain to bring about revolution.

    C.There are actually potential dangers.

    D.There’s competition in high technology.

  • 22、When elderly people stay active, their brains have more of a class of proteins that enhances the connections between neurons (神经元) to maintain healthy cognition (认知), a UC San Francisco study has found.

“Our work is the first that uses human data to show that synapse protein regulation (突触蛋白质调节) is related to physical activity and may drive the beneficial cognitive outcomes we see,” said Kaitlin Casaletto, PhD, an assistant professor of neurology and lead author on the study. The beneficial effects of physical activity on cognition have been shown in mice but have been much harder to demonstrate in people.

The project tracked the late-life physical activity of elderly participants, who also agreed to donate their brains when they died. Maintaining the integrity of these connections between neurons may be vital to fighting against mental disorder, since the synapse is really the site where cognition happens. Physical activity—a readily available tool—may help boost this synaptic functioning.

Casaletto found that elderly people who remained active had higher levels of proteins that facilitate the exchange of information between neurons. This result agreed with the earlier finding that people who had more of these proteins in their brains when they died were better able to maintain their cognition late in life.

“It may be that physical activity generates a global sustaining effect, supporting the healthy function of proteins that facilitate synaptic transmission throughout the brain,” Casaletto said.

The brains of most older adults store poisonous proteins that are the marks of mental illnesses, and the proteins can cause synapses and neurons to fall apart. “In older adults with higher levels of the proteins associated with synaptic integrity, this effect that leads to mental diseases appears to be weakened,” she said. “The study shows the potential importance of maintaining synaptic health to support the brain against mental diseases like Alzheimer’s.”

【1】What helps elderly people keep cognitive ability according to the study?

    A.Proteins produced during physical activity.

B.Body tissues with healthy chemical substances.

C.A certain connection between the brain regions.

D.A type of neuron formed while they’re thinking.

【2】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.Mental diseases may affect synaptic health.

B.Low levels of proteins help to prevent Alzheimer’s.

C.Synaptic integrity safeguards brains against mental illnesses.

D.The brain can automatically break down the poisonous proteins.

  • 23、Long ago in a small town, there was a place known as the House of 1,000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit.

When he arrived, he bounced(跳) happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit often.”

In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door.   When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, “This is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.”

  • 24、Educating girls and young women is a necessary act for a peaceful and poverty-free world. Until we give them equal access to a good quality education, the world will continue to suffer from the serious consequences of child marriage, disease, and inequalities.

Education is linked to the age at which women marry and have children. In sub-Saharan Africa and in South and West Asia, child marriage affects one in eight girls; one in seven gives birth by the age of 17. Education can give these girls a say in their life choices—by giving them the confidence to speak up for their rights, and to demand the opportunity to continue their studies.

Studies show that if all girls in sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia had primary education, there would be 14 percent fewer child marriages. If all girls received secondary education, 64 percent fewer girls would be locked into marriage at an age when they should still be in school.

Moreover, education is closely linked to health. There is strong evidence that educated girls are far more likely to be able to protect their children from preventable diseases, and to avoid malnutrition (营养不良) in their children’s early years. Malnutrition is not only about food: it starts with poverty, which can be avoided if women receive the education they need to earn a living. When a young woman becomes a wage-earner (挣工资的人) for her family, she has a better likelihood of taking effective action to get rid of poverty.

Providing girls with a quality education also equips them with the confidence to challenge the inequalities that still exist for girls and women worldwide. Consider Mariam Khalique, a teacher in Pakistan who has used education to build her female students’confidence and to encourage them to stand up for their rights. One of her pupils was the young education activist Malala Yousafzai, whose global advocacy work is proof of the transformative power of quality schooling.

Educating girls and young women is still one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. However, we must remember that education transforms lives.

【1】What purpose do the figures in Paragraph 3 serve?

A.To encourage more girls to take over their lives.

B.To show education can prevent child marriage.

C.To describe the unhappiness of child marriage.

D.To prove more girls are receiving education.

【2】What does the author mean by “education is closely linked to health” in Paragraph 4?

A.Malnourished kids should receive better education.

B.Education lets kids know how to prevent diseases.

C.Educated mothers can make their kids healthier.

D.Healthy girls are likely to get more education.

【3】What can we learn about Khalique?

    A.She was taught by Yousafzai.
