  • 21、Susan Brownell Anthony was a lady ahead of her time. She fought for women’s rights long before it became a popular issue.

Susan was born on February 15, 1820, in Adams, Massachusetts. At that time, women had few rights. They could not own property. Money earned by a married woman belonged to her husband. Major decisions regarding children were made by the fathers. Women could not vote.

At the age of 15, Susan became a school teacher. She taught for 15 years. Then she began organizing women’s groups to promote causes that were important to women. She helped gain better educational rights for women. She helped give married women possession of their earnings.

After the Civil War, Susan became very involved in the Woman’s Suffrage Movement. After years of lecturing, writing, and appealing by Susan and other women, some parts of the United States changed their laws to give women the right to vote. The first state was Wyoming in 1869. And then other areas and states followed Wyoming’s decision. It was not until 1920 that the US Constitution was changed to give all women voting rights.

Susan Brownell Anthony died in 1906 at the age of 86. She was elected to the American Hall of Fame in 1950. She was the first American woman to have a likeness (肖像) of her face on a coin. It was the 1979 Susan Brownell Anthony dollar.

  • 22、The biggest challenge faced by travelers, especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.

The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.

Not surprisingly, the bag which was worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage of his invention—dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.

In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged (按摩揉洗) for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What's even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.

The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!

【1】What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Pack?

    A.His job requirements.

    B.His career as a lawyer.

    C.His interest in invention.

    D.His personal experience.

【2】Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?

    A.Clothes couldn’t be washed well.

B.The invention was not so convenient.

C.The bag was not beautiful and fashionable.

D.The cost of the invention was very high.

【3】It can be inferred that the improved Scrubba Wash Pack .

A.turns out to be not environmentally friendlier

B.will replace the traditional washing machines

C.will be widely used by more travelers in the future

D.can encourage all people to travel a long distance

  • 23、Along with the standard pigments(颜料)and paintbrushes, artist Sean Yoro(known as Hula), requires an unconventional piece of equipment for his particular brand of mural(壁画) making: a paddleboard.

The Hawaian muralist, balanced on the top of the floating platform, describes women from various sites across the world, whose homelands are often threatened by the effects of global warming.

For his most recent project, titled "What If You Fly", Hula traveled to Baffin Island, off the coast of Nunavut, Canada, to paint a portrait of local Inuit woman Jesse Mike, who lives there with her daughter.

In a short film telling of the artist's process, Mike explains her frustrating previous experiences working with filmmakers who reported on the terrible circumstances troubling her endangered landscape. "For most people, it's about the polar bears, it's not about the people. "she said. "Well, let's make it about the people. "

Hula and his team spent 14 hours searching for the perfect iceberg canvas(油画布),knowing all the while that the ice itself, and any image created on the top of it,would soon melt away into nothing.

"It's a little ambitious to do this larger than life ice mural in the Arctic, and somehow, at the same time, make a connection to the human culture, "climber and filmmaker Renan Ozturk said of the project.

When Hula found his proper ice, he painted a portrait of Jesse he took earlier on his camera. Working against the power of time and Mother Nature, the artist aimed to finish as much of Jesse's portrait as he could before the iceberg disappeared.

The massive image, Hula's most remote and technically challenging piece yet, communicates a memorable reality—the consequences of climate change, first and foremost, affect people.

【1】What is "What If You Fly"?

    A.A film about the muralist.

    B.A project conducted by Hula

C.A painting based on a local Inuit.

    D.A woman called Jesse Mike.

【2】Why did Jesse Mike complain about some filmmakers?

A.They only reported on terrible circumstances.

B.They didn't focus on human beings.

C.They just reported on frustrating experiences.

D.They showed no sympathy to the endangered landscape.

【3】Why did Hula paint image on the Arctic ice?

A.He made an attempt to paint on varieties of materials.

B.He was ambitious enough to explore Mother Nature.

C.He warned people of the consequences of global warming.

D.He wanted to show his unconventional painting.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.A Muralist and an Inuit

    B.Arctic Ice Painting, Memorable Reality

    C.Mother Nature, Massive Images

    D.Standard Tools, Unconventional Paintings

  • 24、In Shakespeare’s HAMLET, Polonius asks the prince, “What are you reading, my Lord?” Hamlet replies, “Words, words, words.” Either, as is likely, Hamlet wasn’t interested in what he was reading, or, less likely, he didn’t understand the words he was reading. In this case, Polonius should have lent Hamlet a good dictionary.

Dictionaries are important tools for people who like to read. There are so many words in English that even the most educated person will sometimes meet an unfamiliar word and have to look it up. Languages keep changing, too, with new words constantly being added and new meanings being applied to old words. For example, the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, the most popular dictionary in China, has added new words such as “chu xin” “fen si” “er wei ma” etc. As for new meanings, “girl” once meant “a small child of either sex”. And “naughty” didn’t mean you were “enjoying playing tricks”; it meant you were poor.

A printed dictionary can’t keep pace with all the changes, which is why most dictionaries have websites and apps to help you keep up-to-date (更新). However, I still prefer printed dictionaries because they give you more definitions and more examples of how a word is used. Even a simple word, such as “set”, has 430 meanings (the most of English words) but an online dictionary would only offer two or three. A printed dictionary also gives you the opportunity(机会) to discover new words as you run your finger down the page looking for the word you want.

There is no “official” English dictionary, but the Oxford English Dictionary is considered to be the best. For English language learners, however, I would recommend(建议)the Collins COBUILD Dictionary for Advanced Learners. Hamlet, by the way, was Danish and a college student. He would have appreciated the Collins Dictionary to help himself with his words, words, words. This dictionary has over 40,000 words and gives you full-sentence definitions with good examples of how words are used.

【1】What’s the function of paragraph 1?

    A.To introduce the topic.

B.To let the readers know more about HAMLET.

    C.To arouse(激发)readers’ interest in Shakespeare.

D.To explain when it’s necessary to use a dictionary.

【2】Why does the author mention “girl” in paragraph 2?

A.To show how powerful Xinhua Dictionary is.

B.To support the idea: languages keep changing.

C.To prove new words are being added to dictionaries.

D.To imply “girl” also means “boy” in some cases.

【3】What’s the author’s purpose of writing the last paragraph?

A.To introduce the history of dictionaries.

B.To call on learners to use dictionaries.

    C.To recommend Collins Dictionary.

D.To explain why Hamlet likes Collins.
