二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A study has found that people who are literate (识字的)had a third the risk of developing dementia (痴呆症)compared with those who had never learnt to read and write. The scientists — behind the study suggested that learning to read may reveal new intellectual worlds and promote a life of the mind that might help to keep brains sharp into old age.

“If one acquires the ability to read and write, that opens up opportunities to engage in cognitively (认知的)stimulating activities, ” Miguel Arce Renteria from Columbia University Medical Centre, said. “Even with low education you can read newspapers and books. That provides opportunities for constant stimulation that can last for the rest of your life. Maybe that might give protection and reduce the effects of dementia."

The research published in the journal Neurology, looked at almost 1, 000 older people in New York, chosen because they had received little education as children. The average age was 77 and more than 90 percent were immigrants (移民),Ali of them had had four years or less of education, with about a quarter describing themselves as illiterate.

Among those who did not read, 35 percent had dementia at the start of the study, increasing to 48 percent four years later. Among the literate respondents, 18 percent had dementia at the outset, rising to 27 percent. After adjusting for social class, age and other risk factors, the scientists concluded that illiterate people were three times more likely to have dementia. They were also twice as likely to have it over the four years of the investigation.

It is impossible to say for certain that the link means that literacy delays dementia. It may be that people who managed to get a better education before arriving in the US were also different in other ways. However, Dr Arce Renteria said, “What this provides is strong evidence for a pretty strong link. ”

1What is the finding of the study?

    A.Dementia slows people’s reading speed.

B.Dementia can be cured, by reading.

C.Literacy prmotes life quality of old people.

    D.Literacy makes dementia less likely.

2Which of the following can replace the word “outset” underlined in paragraph 4?

    A.Bottom. B.Middle C.Beginning. D.End.

3How did the researchers draw the conclusion?

A.By carrying out experiments. B.By making a comparison.

C.By working on an assumption. D.By analyzing different answers.

  • 22、   About six years ago, I was on a plane next to a talkative woman. I was tired and wanted to take a nap. But before I could go into “Ignore mode”, she tapped me on the shoulder to introduce herself and I knew she was called Helga.

While talking with Helga, I mentioned that I had started an organization in high school called R.A.K.E (Random Acts of Kindness, Etc.). As I described what we did, Helga got very serious and told me that she thought “there was nothing more important in the world than Kindness.” I was curious why she was so enthusiastic and, as the plane took off, she talked about her last fight to Arizona three years ago. Just as the plane was about to leave for Phoenix, her father’s doctor called to inform her that her dad had suddenly passed away. For the three hour plane ride, she sat in stunned silence around strangers. When she arrived the airport in Arizona, she walked to the nearest wall, sat down, and cried.

And here is the part I’ll never forget about Helga’s story. For two hours she sat and wept while thousands walked to and from at the airport. Helga looked at me and said, “Houston, nobody stopped and asked if I was okay that day. Not a single person. It was that day that I realized Kindness Isn’t Normal.”

Kindness Isn’t Normal. That has stuck with me all these years — especially now that I work in schools nationwide speaking about sympathy, kindness and love. I’m reminded all the time that, we spend so much time worrying about our problems and our lives that we walk by or ignore people in need of kindness every day. I’m often so worried about ME that I’m really bad at taking care of YOU.

So, I’ve made it my duty to do my part in making Kindness Normal. I share stories with students, teachers, and parents about our need for character and compassion. I provide young people with practical ways to exercise Kindness (they don’t always know what it looks like!).

1If you go into “ignore mode” you ______.

A.pay no attention to others B.introduce yourself voluntarily

C.refuse to answer any questions D.start talking with other people

2Why did Helga cry at the airport?

A.She knew that her father died. B.She felt sick after a long flight

C.She was surrounded by strangers. D.She arrived at a completely new city.

3Helga’s story helps the author to_______.

A.teach more people in need B.set up the organization R.A.K.E.

C.pay more attention to his problem D.realize the present situation of kindness

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.A Kind Woman B.Ways to Be Kind

    C.Welcome to R.A.K.E. D.Make Kindness Normal

  • 23、Some people are so rude!

Who sends an email or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?

Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.

In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello. Email, too, is slower than a text. Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.

My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mail?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”

In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask onceacceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thankyou email.

How to handle these differing standards? Easy. Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thankyou message. Others, like me, want no reply.

The anthropologist (人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that timewasting forms of communication do.

    A.Worried.

    B.Surprised.

C.He didn’t receive any voice mail messages.

D.He didn’t want to talk with his father.

【3】Which of the following does the writer agree to?

A.People needn’t learn from one another in traditional societies.

B.Dealing with voice mail should vary with each individual.

C.People needn’t turn to Google for help when in trouble.

D.Declaring who you are or saying hello in texts is necessary.

【4】What’s the best title for this passage?

A.Nowadays: what should we do with text messages?

B.Nowadays: do you like leaving others a voice message?

C.Nowadays: what means should we use in communication?

D.Nowadays: do you need a thankyou message?

  • 24、   A fisherman I know named Joar Hesten called me late in April 2019. A white whale was swimming around his boat near the northern tip of Norway. It appeared to be wrapped in a tight strap (背带), and Hesten didn’t know what to do. White whales are usually found in pods in areas with ice and glaciers — rarely alone along the Norwegian coast. As a marine (海洋的) biologist, I knew that the strap needed to be removed as soon as possible.

We contacted the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries Sea Surveillance Service. When inspector Jorgen Ree Wiig and his crew met with the fishing boat, the nearly 12-foot-long male eagerly engaged with them. He’d clearly been trained. The mystery deepened when Hesten got into the water to remove the strap. Attached to the strap was a camera mount (支架) with the words “Equipment St. Petersburg”.

A week after his discovery, Hvaldimir — the whale, followed a sailboat to Hammerfest harbor, about 25 miles from where he was first spotted. That’s where I photographed him in early May. I had traveled to Hammerfest to determine his physical condition. He was thin: He wasn’t eating on his own and seemed unlikely to survive in the wild. Later the authorities decided to feed him; his meals became daily tourist attractions in Hammerfest.

Training such a whale is expensive and time-consuming, yet no one claimed him. The Norwegian Police Security Service got on the case, and a German journalist used crowdsourcing to track the strap logo to an outdoor-equipment supplier in St Petersburg.

In June Hvaldimir left Hammerfest, in much better shape than when he arrived. Since then he has traveled along the coast of northern Norway, apparently feeding himself. Many people have opinions about what to do with Hvaldimir. Should the lone whale be placed in a dolphinarium (海豚馆), moved to a habitat, or just left to himself ? So far, he seems to be doing fine on his own.

1Why did Hesten give the author a call?

A.To respond to greetings as an old friend.

B.To complain about the behavior of inspectors.

C.To ask him how to help a trapped whale.

D.To tell him increasing whale numbers along the coast.

2How did Hesten feel when diving into the water?

    A.Frightened. B.Confused.

    C.Embarrassed. D.Disappointed.

3What happened to Hvaldimir after being found?

A.He was spied on by a sailboat. B.He was attached to a new camera.

C.He was ordered to perform each day. D.He was supplied with food regularly.

4Which of the following might the author agree with?

A.Keep Hvaldimir in the wild. B.Return Hvaldimir to his owner.

C.Establish a reserve for Hvaldimir. D.Invest more money in training Hvaldimir.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My husband and I have experienced a lot along our travels. Either of us can remember every detail of the trip. The most impressive moment that shortly stands out to me is when Doug and I took the public bus from Turtle Bay Resort to Kualoa Ranch in Oahu, Hawaii. We had plans of making some short videos throughout Ka'a'awa Valley where various scenes of Jurassic Park were filmed. I was so excited about this spectacular adventure. As we were catching our flight out of Honolulu later that evening, we didn't have much time to spare. We were on a quite strict schedule. Unfortunately, we ended up lost.

When we got off the bus at a small neighborhood along the single highway, we realized something was wrong. We checked our map and concluded that we exited the bus many stops too soon. Worse still, it began to rain. We wandered around looking for any residents outdoors to ask for directions. The bus wouldn't make its rounds back to our current stop for quite some time. We could either walk several miles to Ka'a'awa Valley and have no time to make some short videos or wait for the bus to return and still have no time to catch our flight to go on with our planned adventure. Our afternoon was looking awful.

As we angered and complained in front of a local's home, a black SUV pulled up. It turned into the driveway where we had been resting. Doug and I waved, smiled and apologized to the driver for intruding (闯入). I further explained how we were lost and told her of our plans to go to Kualoa Ranch. However, she didn't say anything as she led her dogs out of the car and into her house.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

When she came back outside, she instructed us to get into her car.
