21、 Albert was mad about computer games. He could spend hours in front of the computer. When people encouraged him to leave the screen to have a normal life, he would respond "this is my window to the world. There is much more here than you realize."
Among all his games, he especially liked a rabbit-catching game. He was a real expert at it. He once even won the champion of an online rabbit-catching competition.
One day, as usual, as soon as he got home, he ran to his room to play computer games. But this time he found the computer was not there. Yet in its place there was a box, on which a card said, “Gift for Game Winner." When he opened the box, he found a real rabbit in it. His parents then came in to tell him that they bought him the rabbit in place of the rabbit game because his computer was sent for repair.
Albert loved the little rabbit immediately. He liked playing with it and even gave it a name. He studied its diet and habits. Days later, he actually began to enjoy the company of the rabbit. And he also enjoyed sharing his stories and his growing knowledge about rabbits with his parents, friends and teachers.
Now, Albert is no longer mad about computer games. He prefers learning and discovering new things about animals. He also uses the computer to do that. 22、 The door of a small cage opens up and a bird flies into a large enclosure (围场). The bird lands on a tree and moves its red head to the side, as if it is surprised. “That’s what it feels like to be free,” said Juan Camilo Panqueba, who works at a wildlife center in the Colombian city of Bogota, far from the Caribbean coast, where the bird usually lives.
Birdsong contests have taken place all over the Caribbean for hundreds of years. Although catching any wildlife is not permitted by the law, wildlife trafficking (非法交易) still happens a lot in Colombia, as the officials were too busy fighting with the drug trade, nongovernment fighters and other dangerous groups. Until recently, they did not enforce (强制实施) the law. Now, as dangerous groups have fallen and with the drug trade mostly destroyed, officials are taking another look.
Three weeks ago, Colombian officials saved birds from a group. The group was mostly people who had recently moved to Bogota from the Caribbean and Venezuela. Officials accuse (控告) the group of setting up a songbird competition on social media. In a closed Facebook group, crowds cheered and recorded the loudness and the number of calls from each bird. The owner of the winning bird received$100, and people who correctly predicted the winner could also win money. Environmental officials say the birds were badly hurt, because they were kept in the small cages and forced to listen to loud music all day long to make sure they can sing. In the wild, the birds sing to protect themselves or find a mate. “For them, it was like cruel harm,” noted Juan Camilo Panqueba, who works at Bogota’s wildlife center. There, he and others care for birds and more than 1, 000 animals.

23、A recent study has shown that eating a small amount of dark chocolate every day could be good for your health. Scientists have found that a regular 2 ounces can help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke(中风)without any weight gain. But take care before you reach for a large bar. The effects are canceled out if more than 30 calories are taken into your body each day, the researchers warn.
It’s already known that a chemical called polyphenol(多酚), found in chocolate, can help reduce blood pressure, and blood pressure lowered in this way can reduce the risk of death from a stroke by 8 percent and from a heart attack by 5 percent, scientists declare. And it can also reduce the risk or death in general by 4 percent.
A daily diet with a little chocolate has the same effect with some special diets designed to lower blood pressure, according to one researcher. “Although all the degree of the blood pressure reduction is small, the effects are quite obvious,” the researchers said.
However, Sara Stanner, a nutritionist at the British Heart Foundation, is quite cautious. “This study suggests that small quantities of small chocolate might have good effects on blood pressure. However, it is important to remember that chocolate is also high in fat and calories. So eating much is not good for your heart.” “Polyphenols are also found in fruits and vegetables, which can be taken in without the risks associated with overintake,” she added.
But the German study shows that the fat content does not cancel out the good effects—at least where small amounts are concerned.

Volcanic eruption in Congo
People are checking the damage caused by lava (熔岩) from the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo in Buhene, on the outskirts of Goma, Congo in the early hours of Sunday, May 23, 2021. The volcanic eruption in eastern Congo last night has killed at least 32 people. With little warning, Mount Nyiragongo turned the dark sky fiery (似火的) red on Saturday night and then sent out lava into villages, destroying more than 500 homes, officials and survivors said.
The volcanic eruption caused about 5, 000 people to move from one neighborhood of Goma, a city of about 2 million people, across the nearby border into Rwanda. Another 25,000 sought refuge (寻求避难) to the northwest in Sake, the U. N. children’s agency said. Great sadness, disbelief and fear hung over the area.
More than 170 children were still feared missing, and UNICEF officials said they were organizing transit centers (临时收容中心) to help children who were reportedly separated from their families in the wake of the disaster.
“The population of Goma must avoid unnecessary travel, and also avoid visiting places that have been hit by lava from the volcano because the lava is harmful,” Joseph Makundi, head of Civil Protection for the North Kivu Province said. He also said the volcano remains active and earthquakes are being recorded, calling on the population to remain alert.
