  • 21、A tailgate party is a social event held on and around the open tailgate of a vehicle. Tailgating, which originated in the United States, often involves consuming alcoholic drinks and frilling food. Tailgate parties usually occur in the parking lots at stadiums, before and occasionally after games and concerts. People attending such a party are said to be tailgating. Many people participate even if their vehicles do not have tailgates.

The idea for eating out of the back of a car may have started in 1866 with Charles Goodnight, a Texas farmer. He noticed that the cowboys he employed needed a way to eat on the road, so he transformed a U. S. Army wagon(马车) into a mobile kitchen. There, hungry workers could eat, relax, and socialize after a long day of working.

Nowadays, people tailgate for lots of reasons, everything from college football games to Jimmy Buffet concerts. In schools and communities, some athletic departments, coaches and parents of student athletes rely on post-game tailgating parties to build community and support for their program and team.

What people consider essentials(必备)for tailgating spreads isnt the same across the country. Different areas of the country have their own favorite foods for tailgating. While foods like burgers and chips may be common everywhere, some areas have specialties. For instance, those in Louisiana may consider jambalaya a tailgating must, while those in the Midwest simply cant go without brats. And the West Coast? Dont be surprised to see grilled fish or pasta. While dishes may differ from area to area, one thing is the same across the country: beer.

【1Why did Charles Goodnight invent a mobile kitchen?

    A. To show off his cooking skills

    B. To build a canteen

    C. To celebrate the armys victory

    D. To attract more cowboys

2What can we learn about tailgate parties?

    A. They are usually held before concerts

    B. They are mainly held for cowboys

    C. They are also occasions to make friends

    D. They are meant for football teams

3What do people think a must for all tailgate parties?

    A. Beer B. Sports

    C. Music   D. Vehicles with tailgates

4What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A. The spread of tailgating

    B. The popularity of jambalaya

    C. Favorite foods on tailgate parties

    D. Necessary equipment for tailgating

  • 22、   Many people think that communication is the source of most of their work-related conflicts but they'd be wrong. In a work context, more conflicts come from structural relationships and personal differences than communication itself.

Organizations create job descriptions, specialized work groups, and authority relationships, all with the intent to improve coordination (协调). But in doing so, they separate people and create the potential for conflicts. For instance, departments within organizations have diverse goals. Purchasing is concerned with the timely acquisition of materials and supplies at low prices; quality control's attention is focused on improving quality and ensuring that the organization's products meet standard…When groups within an organization seek diverse ends, there is increased potential for conflicts.

Have you ever met people to whom you took an immediate disliking? Most of the opinions they expressed, you disagreed with. Even insignificant characteristics-the way they cocked their head when they talked or smirked when they smiled-annoyed you. We've all met people like that, and many of us have to work with people like this.

Today's organizations are increasingly diverse in terms of age, gender and race. So, not surprisingly, employees differ on the importance they place on general values such as responsibility, equality and ambition. They also differ on job-related values such as the importance of family over work or freedom against authority. These differences often surface in work-related interactions and create significant interpersonal conflicts.

The above doesn't mean that communication can't be a source of conflicts. It can. Differing word connotations, insufficient exchange of information, poor listening skills, and the like, create conflicts. But the belief that “we can deal with our differences if we just communicate more” is not necessarily true. The evidence actually shows that the potential for conflicts increases when there is too much communication as well as when there's too little.

So when you're trying to manage conflicts, take a thoughtful look at their source. It's more likely that the conflict is coming from work-related requirements, personality differences, or dissimilar values, it is from poor communication. And that might influence the actions you take to resolve the conflict.

【1】From Para.2, we know that in an organization, __________.

A.job descriptions can effectively improve cooperation

B.different goals of branches may cause disagreements

C.division of labor usually results inharmonious relationship

    【2】The author holds that __________.

A.fewer conflicts will appear if we communicate more

B.most people share similar values in the same organization

C.communication is just one of the reasons for most conflicts

D.we'd better calm down before taking action when in conflict

【3】Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

    B.

  • 23、   Some scientists have detected a chemical on Venus (金星) that isn’t expected to be there, which leads them to wonder what is producing the chemical.

Venus may look beautiful in the night sky, but it’s a harsh planet. Its clouds are made of acid. And its atmosphere is so thick that if you could stand on the planet’s surface, you would feel like you were 3,000 feet under the sea. It is the hottest planet in the solar system, with an average temperature of 464℃. Though people have often wondered if Venus used to have life, most people don’t believe life exists there. Now, as a result of work by a group of scientists led by Dr. Jane Greaves from Cardiff University, there may be reason to question that.

The scientists found a molecule called phosphine (磷化氢) in Venus’ atmosphere. On Earth, some bacteria produce small amounts of phosphine in oxygen-free environments. Phosphine molecules aren’t very stable, so they tend to break apart or burn up easily.

Many scientists believe phosphine might be a sign of life on other planets. So the scientists were puzzled when they found signs of phosphine high in the atmosphere of Venus. They double-checked their result and it was the same — high in the clouds there appeared to be too much phosphine.

That led the scientists to think about what could make the phosphine. They studied many ideas, from sunlight, lightning strikes to volcanoes. But none of these could produce the amount of phosphine they detected. One possible explanation for the phosphine is simple — life. For example, some sort of bacteria can somehow survive in the acid clouds of Venus.

The discovery of phosphine on Venus has caused a lot of excitement. The scientists behind the study are eager to do more research. Now, many other people are also looking to focus on the planet and perhaps even create missions to explore Venus’ atmosphere.

【1】According to Paragraph 2, what’s generally believed about Venus?

    A.Life exists there for long.

    B.It is an unlivable planet.

C.It is one of the hottest planets.

D.The clouds on Venus are thin and acidic.

【2】What do we know about phosphine on Venus?

A.It is a kind of gas low in the clouds.

B.It is a possible marker of life.

C.It contributes to the birth of life.

D.It is stable in oxygen-free environments.

【3】What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.The presence of phosphine.

    B.The amount of acid.

    C.The instability of phosphine.

    D.The high temperature.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Is There Life on Venus?

    B.Oxygen Spotted on Venus

C.A New Way to Explore Venus

    D.Will Astronauts Land on Venus?

  • 24、According to a review of studies, running just a mile a day five or six days a week can vastly improve your health. 【1】 That’s less than an hour a week for most people, even beginners, in their aerobic workouts.

The Mayo Clinic reviewed studies published in PubMed since 2000 that included at least 500 runners and spent five years following to analyze the relationship between running and health. 【2】 Runners who ran five to six miles a week weighed less. They also had a lower risk of obesity than people who ran fewer than five miles a week or not at all. That’s not all. Non-runners were more likely to have high blood pressure, diabetes (糖尿病) and certain forms of cancer. 【3】

In addition, evidence suggests there should be a maximum number of miles. Dr. Carl J. Lavie, lead author of the review, told that running hard for more than about an hour every day could slightly increase someone’s risks for heart problems, as well as for running-related injuries and disabilities.

【4】 Changing the routine suddenly will unavoidably cause bad effects on health. If you want to be faster and competitive, you can still keep up your mileage. 【5】 You should also watch out for common running injuries as well as overtraining. If you begin to frequently injure yourself, that’s a sign you may be running too much. And it’s clear you can still get remarkable health benefits at decreased mileage.

A.Running much has a good effect on people’s health.

B.Limiting running to three miles a day is a good idea.

C.What researchers found was shocking in a good way.

D.Or even two miles every other day has the same effect.

E.The key is to know your body and monitor your health.

F.If you’re an eager runner, don’t change your whole routine.

G.That means a little running can benefit our health naturally.

The dark sky, filled with angry, swirling clouds, reflected Greg Ridley's mood as he sat on the stoop(门廊)of his building. His father's voice came to him again, first reading the headmaster's letter, then lecturing endlessly about his poor efforts in maths.

“I had to leave school when I was thirteen. That's a year younger than you are now. If I'd had half the chances you have, I' ...A.nid you want to play basketball? That must be some kind of a joke. Now you just get into your room and hit those books.

It was beginning to cool. Soon large drops of rain splashed onto his jeans. Down the block there was an abandoned house. Without much thought, Greg made a dash across the street and entered a room. Suddenly he heard a man's voice behind him.“What are you doing here?"

“Who are you?" Greg hardly recognized his own voice.

“I'm Lemon Brown," came the answer.

He was an old man. It didn't seem that he was dangerous. “You aren't looking for my treasure, are you?” he asked.

“No. It is raining out." Greg answered, smiling. “You have a treasure?"

"Every man has a treasure." Lemon Brown said, “You want to see mine?"

“If you want to show it to me," Greg shrugged.

The old man carefully untied the strings, and revealed some yellowed newspaper clippings (剪报).

Then he started telling the story of his life. He was a famous blues singer in the past. His wife died young, and his only son went abroad to work.

“I gave him these newspaper clippings that told him who I was, and where he came from. One time I came home, there was a letter saying that he got killed in an accident. It broke my heart. They sent back these clippings. That was my treasure, and when I gave it to him, he treated it just like that, a treasure."

Lemon Brown put his rags in place and looked out of the window.
