  • 27、   Eating chips, chocolates and cakes may damage a child’s intelligence, according to researchers at Bristol University. Their study suggests a link between diet high in processed(加工的) food and a slightly lower IQ. Writing in the journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, they suggest poor nutrition may affect brain development.

The eating habits of 3,966 children taking part in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children were recorded at the ages of three, four, seven and eight and a half. The researchers said three types of diet appeared: processed diet which was high in fat, sugar and fast food, traditional diet of meat, potatoes and vegetables, and healthy diet of salads, fruit and fish. The children all took IQ tests when they were eight and a half.

The researchers found a link between IQ and diet, even after taking into consideration other factors such as the mother’s level of education and social class. Diet high in processed food at the age of three was linked to a slightly lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, suggesting early eating habits have a long-term influence. Dr Pauline Emmett, who carried out the study at Bristol University, said, “Brain development is much faster in early life, and it’s when it does most of its growing.”

Although the relationship between diet and IQ was very strong, the influence was quite small. Processed food was linked with IQs only a few points lower. Experts in the field said the results had shown common sense was right. Fiona Ford, spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, said, “It’s well worth looking at the long-term influence of diet, for everyone’s familiar with the short term. The research agrees with the type of advice we already know, but that’s not always enough. Sometimes a society has to help a person change; we need to educate more young parents about healthy eating.”

1All the following can lead to a slightly lower IQ except ___________.

    A.birthday cakes B.KFC food

    C.chocolates D.fruit salad

2The longest period of the research on eating habits might reach ____________.

A.five years and a half B.two years and a half

C.four years and a half D.one year and a half

3Which of the following agrees with Fiona Ford’s opinion?

A.The British Dietetic Association has a duty to encourage young parents to adopt healthy diet.

B.The research has shown the short-term influence of diet.

C.The British Dietetic Association has predicted the results of the research.

    D.Diet affects people’s intelligence greatly.

4What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Healthy food makes children grow rapidly.

    B.Processed food reduces children’s intelligence.

    C.Eating habits change children’s intelligence.

D.Proper diet makes children wise and healthy.

  • 28、   Everyone judge the film through a different angle. If you a doctor, you may think:”That character would not have survived that fall.” If you’re a physicist : That’s not how black holes work.” And if you’re me, it’s more like: “What a dumb concept of future personal technology!”

It makes me crazy when sci-fi movie makers dream up stuff with no basis in science.Human teleporters(传送器)? Sorry, Star Trek. A bed that detects and cures cancer in seconds? No, Elysium.

On the other hand, some technologies in some movies are so practical that people invest them in the real world. Star Trek’s self opening doors are now a standard feature of grocery store entrances, and the driver less cars from Total Recall(and many other films )are already on American roads.

Lately it’s clear that Hollywood’s production designers have been putting serious thought into the tech we’ll someday crazy. Her , for example, is about a man who falls in love with his siri-like voice assistant. He talks to her through a single earbud(耳机),through which he gets a surprising amount done: processing e-mail, flipping through news stories, sending messages. When an image is essential to the communication, he flips open his phone, where the pictures appears.

The solution makes a lot of sense-----more than , for example, Google Glass, a now dis continued headband that place a miniature screen above your eyebrow. It’s not the technical ones but the social missteps(失策) that make the Glass’s plan fail. Glass’s camera frightened others and made you look like a monster.

You can see why people went nuts over the concept: imagine having all the power of a smart phone without actually needing a smart phone. We won’t see this in the real world, though. Even a projector, battery and processor could be squeezed into a thin band, there remains a lot of challenges. How would the projector attain sharp focus on an irregular , moving palm? How would it project on sunny day? How would it work on very light or very dark skin?

The robots in HBO’s westwood----so perfectly designed that we can’t tell the robots from humans----might be a little untrue. Yet the personal tech in that series makes a lot of sense: the characters carry cardboard-thin, trifold phones. When you need a quick check, you glance at it’s “cover”; when you need the bigger picture, you unfold it into a tablet.(平板)

Most of these shows, however, continue to get one thing wrong: obviously,in the future, our computers make little sounds as their text and images appear. Why do movie makers think that adding silly sound effects make their machines more realistic? In the real world, a room full of burbling screens makes us crazy.

Well, I suppose I should let that part go. They’re just movies, right? They’re not a description of the future----at least not yet.

1Which of the following best describe the technologies in the movies?

A.They are too unrealistic to become true.

B.They are making a lot of sense .

C.They are not favoured by viewers.

D.They are appearing mostly in scientific movies.

2What does the underlined word “went nuts over” in paragraph 6 most probably mean

    A.not interested in

    B.be crazy about

    C.be disappointed about

    D.be worried about

3What can we learn from the passage?

A.We will live in future where the film predict

B.The movies give a right description of our future.

C.The advanced technology contributes to the popularity of the films.

D.Some technology in films might be not welcome in the real world.

4What can we infer from paragraph 7?

A.The design of the robots are the same with human.

B.The tech applied in the movie are far from reality.

C.The phones created in the movie can be real in our life one day.

D.The film is well-received for its advanced technology.

5What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A.How well do movies predict our future?

B.The future of the science films

    C.The more technology, the better.

    D.The imagination of future movies.

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

    Leeches as Medical Treatment

Leeches are small wormlike creatures that live in water and suck the blood of animals and humans. In the past, though, leeches were commonly used in medicine. Then advances in science led to other kinds of treatments, and leeches disappeared from the sick room. Now, however, they are making a comeback.

The use of leeches in medicine goes back at least 2,500 years. Doctors used them to treat the sick in ancient Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. It was believed in those days that taking blood from patients helped to bring their bodies back into balance. This belief and the practice of draining blood with leeches continued through the ages.

Another use of leeches has been investigated by a team of German doctors who study the ability of leeches to reduce pain. Their patients suffer from arthritis, a painful joint disease that often affects knees, shoulders, or fingers. When the German doctors put leeches on the arthritic knees of their patients, almost all of them felt immediate relief from the pain. Most of the patients continued to be pain-free for over a month and some for as long as six months.

Leeches have also proved indirectly useful in treating patients with heart and blood diseases. Since the 1880s, researchers have understood that certain chemicals in. leeches prevent blood from clotting or becoming hard. Many people with heart or blood problems live with a serious risk of the formation of blood clots, which can travel through the blood to the heart or brain and cause death. In the 1950s, a scientist identified the chemical in a leech that prevents clotting. Later studies led to experiments with the chemical and the development of a drug that thins the blood of patients who are at risk for blood clots.

Though doctors today do not view the use of leeches as the all-purpose treatment it once was, they now see that for certain problems, this ancient remedy may be valid after all.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

The sport you choose may 1.Some sports are 2, like golf, which not only 3, but 4 as well, doing damage to environment; while others 5, like the power walking, which is 6. Thus 7 you choose to do, use 8.
