21、Masuma Ahuja can vividly recall what she wore on her first day of school in the United States: black jeans and a gray and orange T-shirt.
It was the early 2000s and her family had just moved from India to Pittsburgh. She remembers an American boy at her middle school asking her, on that very first day, about what she was wearing. He said, “Oh, I didn’t realize that you wore Western clothes in India.”
He thought India was a place where there were snake charmers and elephants on the street. The India that her classmate had pictured was pulled from storybooks and fantasy but the reality was that Ahuja grew up in more wealthy neighborhoods of Mumbai and Bangalore. Those misconceptions about the lives of those in different places — especially women and girls — stuck with her as she went on to become a journalist at The Washington Post and CNN.
And it raised a question — what is life really like for girls around the world? She sets out to answer it in her new book, Girlhood: Teenagers Around The World In Their Own Voices. Published in February, it captures snapshots (捕获快照) of everyday life from 30 girls around the globe in the form of diary entries.
There’s Claudie, a 13-year-old surfer from Pango Village in Vanuatu who dreams of becoming a lawyer; Halima, a 17-year-old from Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, who listens to and intends to follow a famous singer Celine Dion and helps her father peel (削皮) potatoes for his job before school; Sattigul, a 16- year-old who comes from a family of nomadic herders (游牧民族) in Mongolia, loves her pet eagle and wants to be an English translator one day.
When asked about what she hoped her readers could take away from her book, Ahuja said, “I hope that every reader will find themselves reflected in unexpected corners of their stories. And I hope that every girl who picks up the book recognizes that her voice is important and unique.”

22、Psychologists tell us our self-image defines what we believe we can and cannot do. Each of us over the years has built up belief about ourselves: Unconsciously, our pictures of who we are have been formed by past experiences. Our successes and failures, what others have told us and what we think people believe about us all help form impressions of what we think we are. Because self-image is so important in our growth, it is important to examine our concepts of self in order to reach our full potential.
Changing our self-image is possible: Some psychologists suggest we begin to change our self-image by mentally picturing ourselves performing well at some task. Since we presently react to things based on our present images, it’s suggested that we replace those with better ones. In many experiments, people were asked to sit quietly for a few minutes each day and imagine themselves doing well. For instance, subjects would sit and imagine themselves throwing darts at a bull’s-eye on a target. Over a period of weeks, their dart game improved. This has been done with people who wanted to play chess better, throw a ball more accurately increase their salesmanship or musical talents, and improve many other skills. In most cases, remarkable improvement is made.
The point of changing self-image is not to develop an image of ourselves that is not real. To try to become something we really aren’t is just as wrong as living the unrealistic, inferior image we may have. The aim is to find the real self, to bring our mental images of ourselves in line with our true potential. However, it is generally accepted among psychologists that most of us fail to do justice to ourselves. We’re usually better than we think we are.
Another important part of changing self-image is to not think about past mistakes.Don’t let failures do harm. Our errors or humiliation over mistakes are necessary steps in learning. It is all right to make mistakes. But when they have taught us what we did wrong, we should forget them and not dwell on them. Sometimes we keep remembering our failures or mistakes and feel guilty or embarrassed about them. We let them take over, and then we develop a fear.
It is important to have realistic expectations of ourselves. Some of our dissatisfaction might come from expecting too much of ourselves. If we demand constant perfection in everything we do, we can be disappointed and our poor self- image will continue. If our goal is to reach perfection, we are doomed from the start.

24、 The self-cleaning powers of Lotus (莲) leaves are something magical. Water sprayed onto them forms instantly into silvery pearls and rolls right off again-carrying any dirt on the leaf’s surface with it.
Lotus leaves resist water because of the special arrangement of their surface tissues. That arrangement has been reproduced in several man-made materials. Unfortunately, these materials are fragile--and, not being alive, cannot regrow and repair themselves. They are thus hard to commercialize, which is a pity, because the self-cleaning, self-drying surfaces they create could be of great value. However, a technique just described by Dr Jurgen Ruhe of the University of Freiburg, in Germany, may fix this problem by giving lotus-like materials the ability to regrow when damaged.
Dr Ruhe’s approach is to copy a second living organism-this time an animal, the lizard (蜥蜴). As lizards grow, their scales (鳞片) do not grow with them. Instead, old scales fall off and are replaced from below by new ones. Dr Ruhe theorized that it might likewise be possible to create a stack (堆叠) of lotus-like layers that would drop off when damaged, showing a new surface beneath. The task he set himself was to create a stack of these that could tell when the one at the top was compromised so badly that it needed to be replaced, and then replace it automatically.
To test his idea, he first glued the layers of the stack together with a water-soluble (溶于水的) glue. Then he scratched the top of such a stack with a small knife and exposed it to water. He found it worked. The top layer, did, indeed, come loose and fall off as the water leaked into the underlying glue. Such an arrangement will not, of course, last forever. But if the idea can be applied to industrial practice, then long-lived, self-cleaning surfaces may at last become routine.
【1】What's the main problem with lotus-like materials?
A.They are hard to produce. B.They will self-dry quickly.
