  • 21、Michelle Obama has started her campaign against childhood obesity in the US, saying that it is a problem that concerns her both as First Lady and as a mother. She said that the campaign was designed to encourage people to live healthier lives, but admitted that she herself was not immune to the temptations of junk food.

“I love burgers and fries. And I love ice cream and cake. And so do most kids,” she said. But she added, “We're not talking about a lifestyle that excludes (排斥) all that. The question is how we help people balance that out so that they're not facing lifethreatening, preventable illnesses, but they're enjoying their food and vegetables, they're playing and still have time to get a good, fun meal every once in a while.”

One in three American children is overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of developing diabetes (糖尿病), high blood pressure, high cholesterol (胆固醇) and other illnesses. Billions of dollars are spent every year treating obesityrelated conditions. “None of us wants this future for our kids,” Mrs. Obama said.“We have to act, so let's move.”

Her campaign has four parts: helping parents make better food choices, serving healthier food in school cafeterias, making healthy food more available and affordable, and encouraging children to exercise more.

The ambitious campaign, which Mrs. Obama hopes will be seen as her legacy (遗产), is aimed at solving the childhood obesity problem in a generation, so that children born today can reach adulthood at a healthy weight. “This isn't like a disease where we're still waiting for the cure to be discovered. We know the cure for this,” she said.

President Barack Obama praised his wife for dealing with what he called one of “the most urgent health issues facing the country”. “This has enormous promise in improving the health of our children, and in giving support to parents to make the kinds of healthy choices that are often very difficult,” he said.

1Why did Michelle Obama launch the campaign?

    A. She was strongly persuaded by other mothers with obese children.

    B. She wanted to help the President with his work.

    C. She has found that her own children are also obese.

    D. She aimed to call on people to lead healthier lives.

2It can be inferred from what Michelle Obama said that ________.

    A. she hates junk food but can't resist it

    B. junk food should be rejected by children

    C. people should balance healthy food and junk food

    D. people are too cautious about junk food

3According to the author, obesity ________.

    A. must be caused by eating junk food

    B. leads to a great loss of health and money

    C. is certain to make people develop illnesses

    D. results from the rich life in developed nations

4President Obama thinks highly of the campaign because ________.

    A. it contributes to the improvement of childhood health in America

    B. he realizes that the obesity problem is the most urgent global issue

    C. he thinks his wife is helping by sharing his concerns

    D. he really understands how tough it will be to carry out the campaign

The Zuta Pocket Printer was invented by Zuta Labs, based in Jerusalem. This small printer is about 10.2 cm wide and long and 7.5 cm high, and weighs about 350 grams. The company plans to ship its printers to customers in the beginning of 2017.

  • 23、French fries and chips are commonly eaten around the world. However, a growing global potato shortage is limiting french fry orders in various countries.

The coronavirus pandemic and extreme weather have caused supply chain break, which has led to a number of popular items, including cream cheese, going short. Potatoes are the latest items to join the list.

In Japan, McDonald’s locations stopped offering large and medium-size french fry orders in late December. Pandemic-related supply chain issues and floods in the Port of Vancouver in British Columbia delayed potato shipments.

Days later, South Africa’s leading makers of potato chips warned that potatoes were in disturbingly short supply. A bad frost and too much rainfall led to low local yields. Global sourcing shortages were already a problem.

In Kenya this January, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) locations took french fries off of their menus. Shipping delays caused by the pandemic held up containers full of potatoes for more than a month. KFC allowed customers to swap in other menu items in place of fries in combo meals (套餐).

Jacques Theunissen, KFC’s chief executive for East Africa, told a Kenyan newspaper that it could not easily switch to Kenyan local potatoes because of global quality standards. “All suppliers need to go through the global quality assurance approval process, ” he said.

The United States are among the world’s top potato producers. However, in 2021, U. S. farmers had to destroy millions of potatoes. Lockdowns and stay-at- home orders led to a sharp decline in demand, including from restaurants. Being the USA’s largest overseas market for potatoes sent by ship from North America, McDonald’s in Japan said it was considering flying in potatoes to meet demand until the backup in Vancouver was resolved. However, heavy snow in early January further delayed shipments. After, the company announced that it would be sticking with its small-order maximum for at least another month.

B.They caused KFC to give customers other items instead of potatoes.

C.They caused KFC to establish a new quality assurance process.

D.They caused KFC to start buying potatoes from local farms.

【3】According to the article, why did U. S. farmers destroy their potatoes?

A.Much of their potato crop was affected by a plant disease.

B.Stay-at-home orders led to a decrease in demand for potatoes.

C.Flooding at the Port of Vancouver prevented the shipment of U. S. goods.

D.McDonald’s restaurants in Japan allowed people to order only small fries.

【4】What is the main idea of the article?

  • 24、Many shopping malls now have special areas that offer shoppers their first chance to experience “VR technology”. You may have entered one out of curiosity, or you may think it is just another piece of useless technology. Whatever your opinion, VR, or virtual (虚拟的) reality, is going to become a big part of our lives very soon.

2016 saw the introduction of many fancy products in the world of VR, including

Microsoft’s HoloLens and Samsung’s Gear VR. All of them offer an exciting look at the new realities and opportunities that VR brings. These, however, are the early days of a technology that is expected to go from strength to strength. And 2017 looks like it is going to be the year in which VR technology really takes off.

For a start, using VR will become more normal in 2017. Microsoft and Intel have already discussed their plans for simpler and less expensive VR headsets.

“The idea of VR will stop being a sci-fi (science-fiction) idea, and instead it will turn into an industry of real products used as ways to show off imagination.” Said Andrew, a designer at US VR Company, Survios. It is also expected that VR products will play a part in more common and real-life fields like fashion and film. For example, to enjoy the atmosphere and energy of the front row experience at a fashion show, fans will no longer have to go along in the flesh. Instead people will be able to enjoy the experience by just wearing a VR headset at home.

You can also expect VR mirrors and fitting-rooms sooner rather than later.”This is an especially good opportunity for brands looking to offer very personalized experiences.” Said Roy De Young from US-based marketing agency, PMX.

As time goes on, there will be less discussion about whether people will accept VR technology. It will simply be a discussion of when.

1Why do many shopping malls have areas for VR experiences?

    B. To meet the demands of shoppers.

2What does the underlined phrase “in the flesh” mean?

  • 26、阅读下面短文, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

    Yoghurt

It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.

My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.

I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say, “It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal? ” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.

On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then— bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕)frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help him. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.
