  • 26、   Many doors close for those who have ever been in prison for a crime. It can be difficult for former prisoners to reenter society. A number of training programs are aimed at reopening doors for these men and women.

“Together We Bake” teaches cooking and marketing skills to women who have spent time in prison so they can start new lives. It is a 10-week program which teaches women how to bake and sell cookies. Two friends, Tricia Sabatini and Stephanie Wright, created the program.

“I have a background in social work and she is an amazing baker,” Ms. Wright explains. “We discovered that for this population of women, returning from prison into the community, there aren’t a lot of resources for them. So we thought we could combine our passions(激情) and develop this job as a training program. “Stephanie Wright says they started the program earlier this year.” We had two classes so far that have graduated. This is our third class. We have eight women currently in this class. We’ve 16 women graduated in the first two classes.”

Terry Garred is one of the graduates. She says the program helped her turn her life around. Next she hopes to complete her high school studies. She is also working for “Together We Bake” to help other women follow the path she took.

The program includes classes in which the women talk about their experiences and learn communication and job skills. Thirty-six-year-old Jamie White had spent three years in jail, which made her a little puzzled about her future life back into society. But she found those meeting were very helpful. She learned how to open up, and was just trying to better herself. She gained new skills. She sells baked goods at local markets every weekend now.

  • 27、Bessie Coleman was born in Atlanta, Texas, in 1892. Her mother was African American. Her father was part African American and part American Indian. Her family was poor. Bessie had to walk more than six kilometers to go to school.

Bessie had to pick cotton and wash clothes to help earn money for her family. She was able to save a little money and went to college in the state of Oklahoma. She was in college only one year because she did not have enough money to complete her studies. But during that year, she learned about flying. She read about the first flight of the Wright brothers and the first American female pilot Harriet Quimby.

When she was 23, Bessie Coleman moved to Chicago, Illinois to live with two of her older brothers. There, she heard stories from pilots who were returning from World War I. She decided she was going to learn how to fly airplanes. But she soon found this to be almost impossible. What flight school would admit a black woman? Bessie learned that she would have a better chance in Europe. She began to study French at a language school in Chicago.

Soon after the end of World War I, Bessie Coleman left for France. She attended the famous flight school, Ecole d'Aviation des Freres Caudron. She completed seven months of flight training. Coleman earned her international permit to fly in 1921 and she became the first black woman pilot.

Coleman returned to Chicago. She was the only black female pilot in the United States. So her story became popular in African American newspapers. • 28、   Mosquitoes have an extraordinary ability to target humans far away and fly straight to their unprotected skin. Regrettably, mosquitoes can do more than cause an itchy( 发痒的)wound. Some mosquitoes spread several serious diseases, including Dengue, yellow fever and malaria.

Over one million people worldwide die from these diseases each year. New research now shows how  mosquitoes choose who to bite.

Mosquitoes need blood to survive. They are attracted to human skin and breath. They smell the carbon dioxide gas, which all mammals breathe out. This gas is the main way for mosquitoes to know that a warm-blooded creature  is nearby.

But mosquitoes also use their eyes and sense of touch. Michael Dickinson is a professor at the California  Institute of Technology. His research shows how these small insects, with even smaller brains, use three senses to  find a blood meal.

Michael Dickinson's team used plumes( )- a material that rises into the air of carbon dioxide gas into a wind tunnel. They then used cameras to record the mosquitoes. The insects followed the plume.

Then, the scientists placed dark objects on the lighter colored floor and walls of the tunnel. Mr Dickinson said, at first, the mosquitoes showed no interest in the objects at all. "What was quite striking and quite surprising is that the mosquitoes fly back and forth for hours. These are hungry females and they completely ignore the objects  on the  floor and wall of the tunnel, But the moment they get a hit of CO2, they change their behavior quite obviously and now would become attracted to these little visual spots.

This suggested to the researchers that a mosquito's sense of smell is more important in the search for food. Once mosquitoes catch a smell of a human or animal, they also follow visual signals.

1What do mosquitoes mainly use to find their targets?

A.Sense of smell. B.Sense of touch.

    C.Sense of sight. D.Smart brains

2How did the mosquitoes respond to the objects firstly in the experiment?

A.They flew to the dark ones B.They caught and stuck to them.

C.They took no notice of them. D.They attached themselves to them

3How can we avoid being attacked by mosquitoes according to the text?

    A.Don't let them see us

B.Use dark objects to stop them

C.Make them fly back and forth for hours

D.Attract them to objects full of carbon dioxide gas

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.How Do Mosquitoes Survive?

B.How Do Mosquitoes Choose to Bite You?

    C.Why Do Mosquitoes Need Blood?

D.Why Do Mosquitoes Attack the Human Being?

  • 29、   My father died when I was nine, and I remember doing the household chores to help my mother. I hated changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) bag and picking up things the machine did not suck up.

Twenty years later, in 1978, I was doing chores at home alongside my wife. One day the vacuum cleaner was screaming away, and I had to empty the bag because I could not find a replacement for it. With this lifelong hatred of the way the machine worked, I decided to make a bagless vacuum cleaner.

Easier said than done, of course. I didn’t realize that I would spend the next five years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (设计原型). By the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I were really counting our pennies. By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.

I just had a passion for the vacuum cleaner as a product, but I never thought of going into a business with it. In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements (许可协议) for my technology. The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤网). No one would license my idea, not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business.

That gave me the courage to keep going, but soon after, the companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner. However, I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally persuaded Lloyds Bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.

Today, I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process. Nothing beats the excitement of invention. Go out and brainstorm your ideas. You are not bound to any rules — in fact, the stranger and riskier your idea, the better.

1According to the article, which of the following statements about James Dyson is NOT true?

A.He lost his father during his childhood and lived with his mother.

B.He decided to develop an innovative vacuum cleaner for his wife while in his thirties.

C.He built over five thousand prototypes of the vacuum cleaner between 1978 and 1983.

D.The vacuum cleaner he reinvented became popular with British customers as soon as it arrived on the market.

2According to the article, Dyson’s bagless vacuum cleaner was produced in large numbers _______

    A.in the carly 1980s

B.before he obtained a patent on the product

C.after his bank manager agreed to lend him $I million

D.after he managed to get a S1 million loan

3It can be inferred from the article that _______.

    A.Dyson was a born businessman

B.Dyson's invention might have ended up in failure without his wife

C.Dyson had no confidence in his vacuum cleaner initially

D.Dyson's vacuum cleaner was never recognized by other vacuum makers

4According to the article, which of the following would most likely be Dyson’s motto?

A.We are all failures — at least the best of us are.

B.The foundation stones for a success are honesty, faith, love and loyalty.

C.It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves.

D.The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
