  • 21、March 16th is World Sleep Day. This year’s slogan (标语) is “Breathe Easily, Sleep Well”. Its aim is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep.

Sleep is like food for the brain. Enough sleep helps the body and brain grow and develop. According to the National Sleep Foundation in the US, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. For students aged 10 to 17, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night.

But many students don’t get enough sleep because of early school start time and heavy homework. About 80 percent of middle school students don’t get enough sleep, the China Youth and Children Research Center reported. For some students, they want to sleep early, but they keep worrying about their schoolwork and can’t fall asleep quickly. For others, they may even have insomnia which might keep them awake (醒着的)all night.

These sleeping problems greatly affect people’s lives. Experts have shown that lack of sleep for teenagers leads to poor grades. Students without enough sleep cannot pay attention in class or do well in sports. Also, the lack of sleep may make them depressed (沮丧的).

Luckily, with good sleeping habits, it is easier to fall asleep. Some of these good habits include avoiding drinks that make people excited late in the day, going to sleep at the same time each night, and sleeping in a comfortable place that is dark, quiet, and neither too warm nor too cold.

  • 22、Amazing concept images have shown what homes of the future could look like, as preparations are made for the world’s first freefrom 3D-printed property (房产).

Experts will build a house called Curve Appeal, which will be 3D-printed off-site before being put together on-site to create two outside walls, a roof and an inside part. These four main sections will then be joined together.

Although 3D-printed buildings have been made before, this home — to be constructed in Chattanooga, Tennessee, later this year — will be the first of its kind, as it will contain no regular shapes or angles. The house is the creation of the design company WATG, based in London and California. The design for Curve Appeal draws inspiration from the Case Study House program.

The architects leading the program were famed for constantly pushing the limits in terms of minimalist (极简主义) materials, and trying to create open-plan spaces that focused on enhancing (增强) natural light. In a written statement, a spokesman for WATG said, “Employing many of the same modern design principles, Curve Appeal is the next evolutionary step. It’s important that the architecture and the environment work together harmoniously. The chosen site is steps away from the Tennessee River in a beautiful wooded, sunlit area.”

WATG was awarded the first prize in the Freeform Home Design Challenge in 2016 and given prize money of $ 8,000 to make its plans a reality. The competition was aimed at architects, designers, engineers and artists. Participants were challenged to design a 600 to 800sq ft single-family home that rethinks traditional aesthetics (美学), ergonomics, construction, building systems and structure.

Over the last year, WATG’s Chicago office has been developing their design with Branch Technology. This project is currently underway, working towards breaking ground later this year. Once completed, the Curve Appeal home will have open and light-filled inside living spaces.

  • 23、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Why do some people have many friends while others do not?1However, it is not so. Let’s look at two psychological experiments which will give you the key to happy interpersonal relations. The first experiment is called the “Hawthorne effect” after Hawthorne, Illinois, where the experiment took place. A group of psychologists examined the work patterns of two groups of workers in the Western Electric Company.2The psychologists changed the working conditions for one group twice but left the other group alone. They were surprised to find that productivity increased on both occasions and in both groups. They concluded that the increase in productivity came from the attention given to the workers by the management. It had increased their motivation and so they had worked harder. In other words, if you take an interest in others, they will want to please you and you will have good relations with them.3After Martin Luther King, Jr was killed in 1960s, a teacher, Jane Elliott, living in an all-white town decided to help her class of young children understand why the Civil Rights Movement had been necessary in America. She divided the class into two groups: one with blue eyes and other with brown eyes. Other eye colors such as hazel or green were excluded from his exercise. Then she told the class that brown-eyed people were cleverer than blue-eyed ones because of an agent for brown color found in their blood. Blue-eyed people were stupid, lazy and not to be trusted. Jane Elliott did not need to say any more. The brown-eyed students quickly got used to their new role as the leaders of the class. The blue-eyed students became quiet and withdrawn. Then she discovered something very interesting. Four poor brown-eyed readers began to read fluently in a way they had never done before.4So if you want to be successful and happy, take an interest in others whether they are your classmates or workmates. Congratulate them on their success and sympathize with them in their troubles.5

A.Before the experiment the management talked to both groups of workers and explained that they wanted to find the best working environment for them.

B.Remember that the way you treat others will decide their attitude and behavior to you.

C.The second experiment shows what happens to personal relations if you are rude to or ignore others.

D.The ones who have more friends usually are those who care about others.

E.Jane Elliott had shown that the way people are treated affects not only their behavior but also their confidence and their performance.

F.You may even imagine that this ability was something they were born with because it seems so effortless to them.

G.The second experiment tells us what teachers said had a great effect on the students.

  • 24、Some hearing loss is a common — and nearly unavoidable — effect of aging. A third of people aged 60 and older have lost some of their ability to hear.

But some research suggests a habit that might help offset the effect of aging on hearing. A study found that among middle-aged adults, being a lifelong musician was connected with better hearing later in life.

“The instrument you play does not seem to be important here,” says Nina Kraus, a biologist. “It is really the act of engagement playing the instrument that matters.”

Participants in the study were between ages 45 and 65. Researchers tested 18 musicians who had been playing an instrument since age nine or younger, and 19 non-musicians who had less than three years of music training.

The musicians had statistically better auditory memory scores and tested better at hearing speech in noisy environments. They also showed better auditory processing abilities, which relate to how people interpret speech sounds.

However, the two groups tied when researchers tested visual working memory skills. “It isn’t as though musical training has a volume knob effect that makes all kinds of sensory processing enhanced in the same manner,” Kraus says. “It focuses on auditory skill.”

The latest findings follow earlier research from Kraus that showed musician in a younger age group had better hearing skills. At the same time, some research has shown that musicians who play in large ensembles (合奏) may face an occupational risk when it comes to their hearing.

Does this effect apply to the guy who plays in a community band one night a week? Kraus says no. To be included in the study, musicians were required to have engaged in musical activities-practicing, teaching or performing-at least three times a week.

“What we do with our time and how we engage our senses and our thinking seems to really shape the people we become in very basic ways — in ways that affect how our series work,” she says.

And, Kraus says, a person doesn’t need to be an Itzhak Perlman or a Yo-Yo Ma to experience the effects. Talent, she says, isn’t a factor.

Kraus says that more research needs to be done to see whether receiving music instruction later in life might have the same benefits.
