26、How Kids Express Gratitude
Taking time as a family to practice gratitude doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming and the benefits your children will get are profound. Today we’ll be discussing ideas to help your children express their gratitude.
Make a gratitude tree. Start with a large piece of craft paper and draw a tree trunk. 【1】Each day ask your kids to think of something they’re thankful for, write it on a leaf and tape it to the tree trunk.
Go grocery shopping for a family in need. Many stores now offer premade bags to donate right at the checkout line. While this is convenient, the larger the role they play in the act of giving, the bigger the effect it will have on your kids. 【2】
Express your thankfulness for the ones you love. 【3】Print the photos in a 5"× 7" size and ask the kids to write a short note on the back explaining why they’re grateful to that person. Family members, especially those who don’t live nearby, will cherish the present.
Volunteer together. Pick a regular time, maybe one Saturday a month, and volunteer together as a family. 【4】One child may want to spend a day helping to clean up their favorite park while another might want to read books to nursing home residents.
【5】A regular gratitude practice is a wonderful habit to instill(逐渐灌输) into your children. In fact, studies have shown that people who feel gratitude on a daily basis are happier in general.
A.Keep gratitude journals.
B.Start a gratitude practice.
C.Then ask the kids to paint or color it in brown.
D.It will make the experience much more powerful.
E.Let kids take pictures of themselves with their loved ones.
F.If you can find a charity where you deliver the groceries yourself, that’s even better.
G.Let each family member take turns to pick an activity that means something to them.
27、 A macular hole, a hole at the most crucial part of the retina brought Bonny Huang who is from Hong Kong to the Singapore National Eye Centre for treatment. The retina is the light sensing nerve tissue at the back of the eye. In no time the potentially blinding condition was treated and his vision is now restored.
"In April 2008, I noticed straight lines started to become distorted, and white patch appeared in the centre of my vision. I went to the Singapore National Eye Centre immediately. The ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specializes in eye care and surgery, found a central macular hole in my left eye."
The treatment of this condition involves delicate judgment dependent on the experience of the doctor. The success of the recovery, however, relies largely on the face- down posture by the patient.
"The Ophthalmologist explained to me the operational procedures, and taught me how to comply with the post- surgery face- down posture. The best part is that when I forgot some of the key points he told me, he showed no sign of resentment but instead comforted me not to worry before he went through the points again. I underwent an operation which lasted for only one hour, and maintained a face- down posture for three weeks. The result was very successful."
"I once consulted my Ophthalmologist during his lunch time, and he attended to me without finishing his lunch. His understanding and concern shown towards his patients can be scarcely found in other medical centres. I am very pleased to have received timely treatment in Singapore National Eye Centre where the doctors care about their patients."

29、 For athletes and volunteers, next year’s Tokyo Olympics could become known as the Get-Up-Early Games.
Hoping to beat the summer heat in the Japanese capital, organizers said on Tuesday they will start the men’s 50-kilometer race walk final at 5:30 am, while the men’s and the women’s marathon finals will go at 6 am. The men’s and the women’s triathlon start at 7:30 am. The women’s softball has games scheduled for 9 am, but no men’s baseball games will start before noon.
“A 9 am start is early. That’s my impression,” said Reika Utsugi, head coach of Japan’s women’s softball team. “But we will have one year for the preparation. Softball cannot decide the times.” Softball and baseball were dropped after the 2008 Olympics, and are appearing because of their popularity in Japan.
The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were held in the autumn and did not face heat problems. Modern Olympics which are held every four years can no longer be held during that time, avoiding Europe’s crowded soccer schedule, and year-round scheduling of baseball, basketball and hockey in the US. Koji Murofushi, sports director of the Tokyo Games, said organizers had consulted about scheduling with the International Olympic Committee(IOC), the governing bodies of the individual sports, athletes and medical experts. He said athletes would be able to adapt.
“When we look at the Olympic Games as a whole, of course we need to consider the global audience, adjust and control the overall schedule,” Murofushi said. “Athletes, when they know the schedule in advance, can make adjustments to their preparations.”
As previously announced, the swimming finals will begin at 10:30 am. The swim schedule has nothing to do with the heat and will follow the pattern of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Organizers say the first gold medal event will be the women’s 10-meter air rifle, which will take place on July 25 – the day after the opening ceremony. Organizers have labeled Aug 8 – the day before the closing ceremony – as “Super Saturday”, with about 30 finals, the most of any single day. Finals will include the men’s basketball, the men’s soccer and the men’s baseball.
The most difficult event to schedule might be surfing. Organizers have blocked out eight days for the event, hoping surf’s up for at least four of them. It’s a four-day competition. “The schedule is subject to change depending on the wave conditions,” organizers said.
