26、Four most important eye expressions
The language of our eyes is one of the most powerful and useful tools of non-verbal (非语言的) communication. 【1】 Here are four most important eye expressions that we see every day.
1. Smiling eyes
Researchers have long noticed that a sincere smile starts with our eyes. When we are sincerely happy, the skin around the corners of our eyes crinkles (出现皱纹). But a social, polite smile touches only our lips (嘴唇). 【2】 For example, when a shop assistant smiles at you, offering help, you will immediately get the feeling that they are just trying to sell you something
2. 【3】
People who avoid eye contact during a conversation are often considered as insincere. What does little or no eye contact mean then? Anything from shyness to nervousness.
3. Friendly eyes
When you are carrying on a conversation, looking the speaker straight in the eyes sends a clear message to him: 【4】 This is why so many public speaking experts advise keeping eye ntact with the speaker.
4. “Shut” eyes
Covering the eyes for a long period of time sends a message that you are trying to block out something that you do not want to hear. For example, a man who is asked to work on the weekend may cover his eyes with his fingers as he answers, “No problem.” 【5】.
A.Shy eyes
B.Empty eyes
C.Such behavior is seen with liars.
D.You are paying attention to the talk.
E.The smile you are given is not in the eyes.
F.What his gestures are showing is that he is not happy about it at all.
G.So it is important to learn how to read the body language of the eyes.
27、 Today in the UK teenagers are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many do take up part-time jobs. It's a taste of independence and sometimes a useful thing to put on their CV(简历). Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing their money.
Some research has shown that not taking part-time job could be detrimental to a person later on. A 2015 study by the UK Commission on Employment and Skills found that not taking part-time work at school age had been blamed by employers' organizations for young adults being ill-prepared for full-time employment. However, recent studies have still shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by a fifth in the past five years.
So, does this mean that British teenagers are now more afraid of hard work? Probably not. Young people feel that going out to work will affect their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results — and a good job in the long term. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told BBC News that 'Properly regulated part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.' In reality, it's all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.

C.Having as many part-time jobs as possible.
D.Focusing on teenagers’ achievements at school.

29、 Samuel L. Clemens, also known as Mark Twain, started off his writing career (事业) in 1865 with his big hit story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County — a story-within- a-story told to a listener by an old California miner. From that day on, the works of the great humorist always had different animals.
Some members of Twain’s literary (文学的) animals were based on real animals, such as the Clemens family’s named pet cats. Some were imaginary, like that celebrated jumping frog.
As a boy in Missouri, he got pleasure from knowing the animals of the woods; in old age, he felt a deep relationship with the animals large and small that he met in his travels. His cats, family dog, horses, donkeys, and calf also won his three daughters’ love at their Hartford home. On March 22, 2018, to mark this part of Twain’s personal life, The Mark Twain House & Museum opened a new exhibition (展览), Tails of Twain: How Animals Shaped the Man & His Work. The exhibition was rich with exhibits from the museum’s collections.
The king of the animals in Twain’s world was the cat, “the only creature in heaven or earth or anywhere that don’t have to obey (听从) somebody or other, including the angels.” He was known to be the proud pet parent of 19 cats during his childhood. As an adult, the Clemens home always had a named cat. Even on vacation, the Clemens family borrowed cats from locals to live with them. Dogs were considered second-class pets, but Twain liked them. Twain once wrote an ode (颂诗) to his dead dog Burns: “She lived a quiet harmless life in Hartford ...”
In true Twainism, humans were not as loved as the “Higher Animals”. Even the most low- down animal, however, was superior in Twain’s eyes to “the human race.” After all, he did write once “Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel.”
【1】What can we learn about The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County?
A.It tells a story of Twain’s family pet.
B.It was written for Twain’s three daughters.
C.It made Twain pay attention to animals.
D.It was Twain’s first great success as a writer.
【2】What’s the main purpose of the new exhibition?
A.To introduce how Twain spent his childhood.
B.To exhibit some of Twain’s best-sellers.
C.To show Twain’s different hobbies.
D.To show Twain’s love for animals.
【3】What does the underlined word “superior” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.richer B.better
C.quieter D.stronger

31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
The view that the spirit of adventure no longer has any scope for its enterprise seems, at first glance, depressingly true. The highest mountains have been scaled; the deepest seas plumbed. Maps today no longer contain huge blanks marked "Unknown Territory", nor do they make random guesses at the shapes of 【1】 land-masses. All major journeys of exploration to 【2】 the true shape and nature of the globe have been made in the past. It was left to us to fill in the details with 【3】 which once would have been considered impossible. The gaps have been 【4】. What next?
The obvious answer, of course, is that man is now looking upwards into space. Discoveries are being made at such a tremendous rate that even authors of science-fiction are finding it difficult to keep up with them and have to tax their imagination to invent bigger and better space-craft. Satellites sending signals as they swing round our globe have become 【5】.
Astronauts have successfully landed on the moon and its entire surface has been photographed. The information that satellites may provide fueling stations for manned rockets no longer strikes us as preposterous. If thirty years ago, a scientist has urged that we send messages into outer space in the hope of receiving an answer, he would have been regarded as either irresponsible or mad. Now, anything seems 【6】.
From dreams like these, we return to earth with a bump. Trips into space are all very well, but they are not for us; we must 【7】 ourselves with our own, much-traveled world. The earth itself is the training-ground for adventurous spirits, for "adventure" need not mean the seeking out of something new. A person can be called adventurous when he finds out something for himself, and it does not matter how many times the discovery has been made before. No one would say that men who set out now to cross the forbidding Antarctic are less enterprising than their predecessors who tried to do the same thing. The little boy who climbs the small hill that 【8】 his town, or even he who tries to climbs and fails, has precisely the same spirit that led Hillary to climb Everest. For the bold spirit and inquiring mind, there are inexhaustible possibilities. So long as there are people willing to 【9】 places that are well-known, there will be those who will, one day, set foot on remote and 【10】 shores.

Is Fast Fashion Taking Over?
The fashion industry has changed significantly in recent years. Traditionally, fashion retailers(零售商) created two clothing collections per year, called seasons. Nowadays, in contrast, they can design and manufacture(生产) clothes in as little as four weeks. Fast Fashion means that the latest designs shown at the fashion shows in Paris, London, New York, and Milan can be coped and sold in shopping malls within a month.
The advantages of rapidly changing fashions are clear. Shortening the life cycle of a product means that if a design doesn’t sell well within a week, it is taken out of the stores and replaced with a new one. This is good for manufacturers, as it means a greater volume of sales. It is also good for customers, who can keep up with fast-moving trends cheaply and who can enjoy finding something new every time they visit the store.
However, there are also a number of disadvantages to the fast-fashion approach. Perhaps the biggest concern is the impact of wasted clothes on the environment. The low cost of most fast fashion enables shoppers to buy several new sets of clothes each season. This means that huge amounts of clothing are thrown away. Furthermore, with fashions changing so quickly, cotton growers need to produce more cotton more cheaply, and that means using more pesticides and chemicals. A third problem is the theft of ideas. Fashion houses invest a lot of time and money in new designs, only to see these ideas stolen and copied by fast-fashion companies.
In short, these days it seems that the fashion industry is changing almost as fast as the fashion it produces. What do you think of this?
