【1】
Both Lancashire and London claim to be the first to invent this famous meal. Chips were a cheap, basic food of the industrial north while fried fish was introduced in London’s East End. 【2】 So was born our national dish of fish and chips!
【3】 Mr. Lees sold fish and chips from a wooden shelter in the market. Later he moved the business to a permanent shop across the road. However in London, it is said that Joseph Malin, a Jewish immigrant, opened a fish and chip shop in Cleveland Way within the sound of Bow Bells in the 1860s.
Fish and chip shops were originally small family businesses, often run from the front room of the house and were commonplace by the late 19th century. Through the latter part of the 19th century and well into the 20th century, the fish and chip trade expanded greatly to satisfy the needs of the growing industrial population of Great Britain. Fish and chips became vital to the diet of the ordinary people. 【4】
In 1999, the British consumed nearly 300 million servings of fish and chips. That equates to six servings for every man, woman and child in the country. 【5】 That’s eight for every one Burger King restaurant, making British Fish and Chips the nation’s favourite take-away.

22、 Music comes in many forms. Most countries have a style of their own. The USA is well known for jazz, which has gained world-wide popularity.
In contrast to classical music, which follows formal European traditions, jazz is natural and free form. It is full of energy, expressing the moods, interests, and feelings of the people. It has a modern sound that makes people very excited. In the 1920s jazz sounded like America. And so it does today.
The origins of this music areas interesting as the music itself. Jazz was produced by American blacks, who were brought to the southern states as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners (种植园主) and forced to work long hours in the cotton and tobacco fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a black man died, his friends and relatives formed a group to carry the body to the cemetery (墓地).
A band often went with them. On the way to the cemetery the band played slow and sad music. But on the way home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Death had removed one of their members, but the livings were glad to be alive. The band played happy music, which made everyone want to dance. It was a nearly form of jazz.
Music has always been important in their lives. Coming mainly from West Africa, the black men who were brought to America already possessed a rich musical tradition. This music centered on religious ceremonies (宗教的仪式) in which dancing, singing, clapping and stamping (顿足) to the beat of a drum were important forms of musical expression. As these people settled into their fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the time of hard work go faster.
Another musical form that helped to develop jazz was the blues. Blues songs always describe something sad —an unhappy love affair, a money problem, bad luck. To this day, the expression “feeling blue” means being sad.

23、I know in these days of social media teens are measured by the size of their social circles. Their followers, likes, and friends they can contact seem to be the measure of their self-worth. They feel they need a huge group of friends, and that they have to be liked by everyone.
When I was young, I thought when it came to friends, the more, the better. I was always on the hunt for new friends, which wasn’t hard for me because I was very lively and outgoing. Now, I have a few close friends who I’ve had for thirty years. I’m so grateful for that. These are the friends who have stuck by me through life’s ups and downs even if we are living in different places or are in different phases of life.
Of course, there have been other friendships that have come and gone depending on the stage of my life. The older I get, the more I’m okay with letting certain friendships and people fade out of my life.
I don’t want my kids to chase friendships just to get their number up or think that the more friends they have, the better off they’ll be. As you get older you don’t need a hundred friends, but just a few good ones. The truth is that there is only so much energy we have for nurturing(培养)love in a few true friendships. You just can’t give your closest friends enough of yourself when you are always looking for more people to join your group.
That doesn’t mean I’m teaching my kids not to let anyone else in. I just want them to know that after they graduate from high school and as they get older, having lots of friends matters less and less. What really makes a difference in someone’s life is having one or two true friends that they can trust and rely on.
【1】Which aspect do teens today pay great attention to according to the author?
A.Why they are unable to make friends.
B.What truly improves their self-worth.
C.Whether they are popular among people.
D.How they behave themselves on social media.
【2】How does the author feel about her loss of some friendships now?
A.Sad.
B.Calm.
C.Surprised.
D.Disappointed
【3】What is the author’s suggestion for her kids?
A.Giving more time to themselves.
B.Having a wide social circle.
C.Having a few quality friends.
D.Choosing friends carefully.
24、As 17-year old Torri’ell Norwood drove through St. Petersburg, Florida, the laughter and chatter from the four teenage girls inside her car quickly gave way to screams. As they approached a crossroads, another car T-boned them, sending their car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree.
As smoke rose from the other car, someone shouted, “It’s about to blow up! Get out!” The impact had caved in Norwood’s driver’s side door. Shaken, but otherwise OK, Norwood crawled (缓慢移动) out through the window. Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life.
But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, A’zarria Simmons, wasn’t with them. Norwood ran back to the car and found that Simmons fainted in the back seat and wasn’t moving. She threw open the back door and pulled her friend out. She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. “I checked her pulse.” Nothing. “I put my head against her chest.” No sign of life. “That’s when I started CPR(心肺复苏术).”
Amazingly, Norwood had just earned her CPR certificate the day before. Kneeling on the ground and looking down at her dying friend, Norwood knew she had precious little time to practice what she’d learned. She started pressing Simmons’s chest and breathing into her friend’s mouth in hopes of filling her lungs with the kiss of life. No response. And then, after the 30th compression(挤压), Simmons began coughing and gasping for air. The CPR had worked!
Soon, ambulance crew arrived and rushed Simmons to the hospital. Thanks to Norwood’s quick thinking, Simmons is recovering well. And then she heard how her best friend had saved her life. “I know I wasn’t shocked,” Simmons said. “She will always help any way she can.”
