21、Most musicians agree that the best violins were made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments like the old Italian violins. But they aren’t the same. Why are these old Italian violins so special? Many people think they have an answer.
Some people think it is the age of the violins. But there is a problem here. Not all old violins sound wonderful. Only those from Cremona are special. So age cannot be the answer.
Other people think the secret to those violins is the wood. It must be from certain kinds of trees. It must not be too young or too old. Perhaps the violin makers of Cremons knew something special about wood for violins.
But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut into the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this is the secret of the Italians.
Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists make new violins that are exactly the same size and shape. But the new ones still do not sound as good as the old ones. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish (清漆), which covers the wood of the violin and makes it look shiny. It also helps the sound of the instrument. Since no one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish, no one can make the same varnish today.
There may never be other violins like the violins of Cremona. And there are not many of the old violins left. So these old violins are becoming more and more precious.

23、I had always been one of those quiet boys who preferred dreams to the real world. I was, in addition, absurdly shy, and therefore often mistaken for a fool, which upset me deeply. For nothing terrified me more than the prospect of correcting a false impression. Though I was often blamed by mistakes made by my classmates, I never dare to say a word in self-defense. I would simply go home to hide in a corner and cry. My greatest pleasure was to sit alone, reading, and let my thoughts drift away in the stories.
My daydreams were in sharp contrast to real life; they were full of adventures and heroic deeds. They left marks on me. There was, for instance, a book about the history of the Roman Empire, in which an ambassador, while negotiating a treaty, was told that he was to accept the terms offered, on pain of death: his response was to plunge his arm into a fire and continue with his deliberations, in absolute calm. Inspired by his courage, I proceeded to test my own powers of resilience by plunging my own hand into the fire, only to burn my fingers badly. I can still see that ambassador, smiling calmly through his pain. Father hated my reading all the time, and sometimes he threw away my books. Some nights he refused to let me turn on the light in my bedroom. But I could always find a way, and after he caught me reading by the light of a string-wick lamp, he gave up and left me to it.
There was a time when I tried my hand at writing; indeed, I even made a few little poems, but I quickly abandoned my efforts. No matter what I had bottled up inside me, I was extremely anxious about letting it out, and so my adventures in writing ended. I did, however, carry on painting. There was, I thought, no risk of revealing anything personal. I just took something from the outside world and brought it to life on paper. Sometimes I did hide some personal expression in it, but I made sure that it was visible enough to be seen and trivial enough to be ignored. The first time I showed my painting to my father, he was caught in silence for a while and then he breathed deeply, and said: “My son finally made something.” Then here I am, as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts, wondering how everything happened, from my daydreams to painting.
【1】The sentence “They left marks on me.” (in paragraph 2) means ________.
A.daydreams not achieved were equal to suspending castles.
B.daydreams erased my long-lasting memories of reading.
C.daydreams slightly influenced the writer’s behavior in reality.
D.daydreams reshaped the writer’s pursuit of career.
【2】What’s the deep root reason why the writer quit writing?
A.Lack of gift in figuring out the intriguing part of reading.
B.A psychological tendency to lock his inner world away.
C.Suspicion and reluctant compromise from his sophisticated father.
D.Nerve-racking experiences of writing original poems.
【3】What is the likely theme of the whole passage?
A.Attaining success requires innovation and groundbreaking spirit.
B.Despite others’ mockeries, fragrant flowers are always on the way.
C.Reflection and showing it out serve as potential bridges for fantasies.
D.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to stick to stereotype wrinkles the soul.

This document sets out the display standards for Glasgow Museums. This guide will help exhibition planners provide access to exhibitions in our museums. Glasgow Museums’ aim is to improve access to collections by having as many items as possible on display and without physical barriers. We also try out best to protect these objects without limiting access to them.
Object Placement
·Don’t place objects in such a way that they could present a danger to visitors.
·All object displays, cased or otherwise, must be viewable by all, including people who are small in figure or in wheelchairs.
Open Display
·All objects on open display must be secure from theft and damage.
·All objects identified for potential open display must be viewed and agreed on an object-to-object basis by the Security Manager of the museum.
Recommendations | Distance |
Recommended distance to place objects out of “casual arm’s length”(taken from the edge of the object to the edge of any proposed form of barrier) | 700mm |
*In some cases, 600mm may be acceptable, provided the plinth height is above 350mm.
Cased Objects
·All cased displays should fall within the general optimum(最优的)viewing band of 750-2000mm. Ensure everything is visually accessible from a wheelchair.
·Position small objects or those with fine detail in the front part of a case, with larger items behind.
·Position small items or those with fine detail no higher than 1015mm from floor level. Objects placed above this height are only seen from below by people in wheelchairs or people who are small in figure.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The teacher was new. She was a substitute(代替者). She wrote that word “Mugs”(马克杯)on the blackboard when she arrived. Today, she said we were making mugs for Mother’s Day. They were white and would say WORLD’S BEST MOM on the side. Some kids couldn’t read it, but I could. Dad had been teaching me. I could read The Magic School Bus by myself now.
When the new teacher tried to give me a mug, I told her I didn’t want one. Her eyes widened. “I’m sorry, what was your name?”
“Milo,” I told her, “and I don’t need a cup.”
“Why not, Milo?” she asked in confusion.
I was ready to say, “Because my mom doesn’t live with us anymore and she left two years ago. Dad said he doesn’t know where she is, so I won’t be able to give her a mug.” Speaking this, I thought of a day, a long time ago, when I was four. Mom came home from work and gave Dad a chocolate bar and me a doll. And Dad was confused because he and Mom had been mad at each other the day before. But he wasn’t mad any more because she gave him chocolate, I guess. He was happy and surprised and he picked Mom up and tried to spin(使旋转)her around but he almost dropped her and I fell off the couch because I was laughing so hard. What sweet memories! However, she left us. From then on, Dad and I lived with each other and he waited on me hand and foot.
Suddenly, a gentle touch on my hair called my mind back. “You can give it to your father as a gift,” the teacher said, looking at me gently. I stood in silence. And next to me, Amelia was already gluing pink flowers all over her mug, and I wanted to do that too, and it didn’t seem fair that she got a mug and a mom and I didn’t get either.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I looked back at the teacher and took a mug out of her hands and said,
